Daily Stuff 6-24-12 St. John’s Eve

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 10am. Brea’s Elements at Noon. Practical Crafts at 2pm.

My head is all stuffed full of cotton, it feels like, my eyes are gritty, and I *got* enough sleep. <gah> I hate being that kind of tired in the morning. Something woke me in the middle of a sleep cycle, I think, because I was almost awake when the news came on at 7, but then startled awake at 7:30, not at 7:40 (which is when I should have), so now I’m dealing with leftovers from that.

Oh, coffee…. This is definitely a coffee morning. ….

Ok, my eyes are open. I’m still not all the way functional, but my typing speed is coming up to almost normal. The day can start…. <grin>

The sky has a lot of cloud in thick curdled layers, but when the sun makes it through it’s very bright and very golden. It’s in the mid-50’s again. …and my planter box is steaming…. There’s very little wind, so the dark things are heating up to visibly steam. I went over to look squarely at it, and first the box did, then I noticed the rental house roof, then the porch railing, then the porch steps, then the potato planter…. Odd looking to say the least! The dew point is at 53F. That was the temp when I first looked, but it’s climbing steadily, up to 54.2… 54.4 when I just looked. . There’s a water droplet that is sparkling in the red/yellow end of things when the alder moves. …and a sparrow landed on the branch, which release a sparkling shower….and now the whole tree is scintillating. 54.9… just in 6 minutes…. Wow….

I’ve seen grosbeaks on the feeder and some sparrows.

Yesterday went well. I was very busy with customers and never got into the back to work on herbs. I never even got the table cleared off enough to work! I did the prep work for several earrings sets, which mostly consists of figuring out what kind I wanted to make…which were the $5 ones, so those are the less expensive materials. It’s all just sitting on the table, though.

None of the workshops had any attendees…

I took the rock table out in front of the shop next to the book barrow, but brought it in when the sun started to hit it, since I didn’t want to fade the cloth or the pouches.

The main thing I accomplished was finally inventorying the tarot deck samples from Metamorphosis and getting those set up. I’ve put the ones that we don’t carry into a tray below the rock table and behind the divination case. …and labeled things…. And realized what all I need to order in the way of tarot decks….

Late in the day after Tempus got back we sorted out the divination case and got the display cleaned up.

Maybe I actually did something yesterday!

We have classes today and Tempus is working for Sandra, so I’m going to be pretty tired at the end of the day, running a lot of the shop stuff myself. Today’s Practical Craft is going to be Witch’s Ladders, so along with cleaning off the class table I need to roust out the supplies.

…and about an ½ hour after I started typing it’s up to 56F….

The shop opens at 10 today, but we’ll be there somewhere after 9am. Summer hours, 10am-7pm, Wednesday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,

Anja

There is no friendship, no love, like that of the parent for the child. – Henry Ward Beecher (1813 – 1887)

Try and live your life the way you wish other people would live theirs. – Raymond Burr (1917 – 1993), Actor

In that moment you are drunk on yourself
The friend seems a thorn.
In that moment you leap free of yourself, what use is the friend?
In that moment you are drunk on yourself
You are the prey of a mosquito;
And the moment you leap free of yourself, you go elephant hunting. – Jalal-ud-Din Rumi (Translated by Andrew Harvey from A Year of Rumi)

Atlantis – Way down below the ocean … By Pip Wilson

June 5, 8498 BCE Atlantis drowns – 8498 BCE is a traditional date of the natural calamity that destroyed the supposed ancient civilization of Atlantis.

One wonders what is the origin of the human love of the unlikely, the irrational, the bizarre and the preposterous, but no amount of wondering will solve the puzzle. The chance that an advanced civilization lies beneath the ocean, undetected by 21st-century oceanography, satellite imaging, geology and any number of modern scientific aids, is slim indeed, but here we have a persistent legend that is probably believed by more people today than in the Middle Ages. I confess to having my own imp of fascination for many things to which I give no credence whatsoever. A hobgoblin, a tale from the crypt, or a UFO or two can brighten the dreariest evening.

Atlantis, or so it is said, was a huge island lying beyond the Pillars of Hercules (now known as the Straits of Gibraltar) and its culture had dominated the Mediterranean nine thousand years before Solon, the lawmaker of Athens. From its ideal condition as an advanced culture it deteriorated into a military aggressor, so the gods resolved to punish the civilisation. We have this on authority of Plato in his Timaeus and Critias (c. 350 BCE). He learned the story from his cousin, who got it from his grandfather, who heard it from his father, who got it from Solon himself, who heard it from the priests of Sais in Egypt in 590 BCE.

The story was known in Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, (c. 2040-1640 BCE). It might be related to the c. 1500 BCE eruption of the volcano on the Minoan-related island of Thera, and 40 years later its collapse into the sea. Crete’s civilisation might have perished at this time in the cloud of ash and the tsunami. (There was a huge volcanic eruption on Santorini in 1628 BC, calculated at between three and four times more explosive than Krakatoa in 1883. Plato says the island of Atlantis had a structure of concentric rings, which are discernible on Santorini.)

Over the centuries, the position of Atlantis has been postulated by various scholars and pseudo-scholars as being in almost every corner of the planet. That said, it is true that many unsolved mysteries remain with regard to the languages and cultures, myths and legends of peoples of all nations, and the search for connections is a fruitful one. Why are there pyramids in the Americas and distant Egypt? How do we explain the similar gods and words across the continents? The search for these threads of connection isn’t new: in the period of 1913-1925, English explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett searched for a fabled Atlantean outpost in the Amazon River basin. Fawcett, his companions and the fabulous lost city of quartz buildings that they were seeking, all vanished in 1925.
