There are a few more clouds in the sky this morning and it’s just a tad warmer, 36F. They’re talking rain by noon, but there’s no sign of that, now, except that there’s no frost. Today is a minute longer than yesterday. The Sun is returning!
So, yesterday I went back to bed again. I guess I’m trying to hibernate or something. I got up just before Tempus left for work, read mail and then settled in on Cafe Press updates. He got home 3:30-ish, having been shoveling sand again. He went over next door to work on the problem over there, while I kept slogging away. When he got back, he took a bath and got some supper together. I suggested that we put the turkey in cream gravy that we had yesterday over waffles and have a salad. It was really tasty! I got a bath and then back to work. I’m about 2/3 of the way through the updates on the Women & Teas series so there’s more to do. I’m going to try to keep going on that today. Here are a few of the ones that I did yesterday.
There’s a sweatshirt (pictured), one of a bunch of shirts, long and short-sleeved, hooded or sleeveless, in sizes from newborn up into the plus sizes. There’s a teapot (pictured) where the design wraps all the way around, just as it does on the thermos food cup (pictured) that goes along with mugs in various sizes, water bottles, etc., and there’s a clock (pictured) that’s one of 5 different sizes….. and quite a number of other things. They’re up to almost 400 products! Part of why it takes so long is editing each and every different product to make sure that the design is the right size and not running the words off the side or something of that sort and that the price is in line with the others that I have up. … and no, I don’t have a lot of choice about how much some of the things cost. I make only $1-$3 on most of these items! You can find my designs here: http://www.cafepress.com/ancientlight
The sun is rising, now, on the other side of the mountains, turning the clouds to a brilliant golden-orange and thing are getting lighter by the moment. The alder tree is very pink this morning. Some quality of the light? Or reflection?
Today we’re heading for the shop to open at 11am. As far as I know I’ll be there all day. Tempus has a job to do at noon and then he’ll be back and we’ll put the Readings sign out, but I’m hoping to get my data today, so that means a trip into Newport.
There’s a Steller’s jay on the bird feeder. Tempus put it out just a few minutes ago and it’s mostly had sparrows, but the jays chase everyone away.
…and the sun came over the mountains, shone in the windows and the clouds covered it up within minutes. Well, it was pretty while it lasted!
In Roman mythology, Pax (‘peace’) was recognized as a goddess during the rule of Augustus.
On the Campus Martius (Field of Mars, God of War), she had a minor sanctuary called the Ara Pacis, dedicated to her on January 30, 9 BCE. Her temple was on the Templum Pacis (Forum Pacis) built by Emperor Vespasian on the site of a meat market, and was dedicated in 75. She was depicted in art with olive branches, a cornucopia and a sceptre. Pax became celebrated (in both senses of the word) as Pax Romana and Pax Augusta from the 2nd Century BCE.
In Greek mythology, she was Eirene or Irene (‘peace’), daughter of Zeus and Themis, one of the first generation of Horae. The Horae (the Hours, or Seasons) were Pax and her sisters Lawfulness, Wisdom and Order (Eunomia) and Justice (Justitia/Dike) are sometimes considered to be the three aspects of Themis. As goddesses of the seasons, they brought order to Nature. Eirene was the personification of peace and wealth and was depicted in art as a beautiful young woman carrying a cornucopia, sceptre and a torch or rhyton. Isn’t it a cool idea to have Peace as a goddess?

Beth Birch Dec 24 – Jan 20 Beith – (BEH), birch – The silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) is the most common tree birch in much of Europe. It grows up to 30 m (100 feet) high, but is more often found in spreading clumps on sandy soils. It is one of the first trees to colonize an area after a mature forest is cut; this is probably a large part of its symbolic connection with new beginnings. It is cultivated in North America, often under the name of weeping birch. The common birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) is almost as widespread as the silver birch, but grows primarily on acid or peaty soils. It can reach 20 m (65 feet) in height. Birches are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae). Curtis Clark

As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,– as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen, – and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. – Treaty between USA and Libya, signed at Tripoli, November 4, 1796, and at Algiers January 3, 1797.
