I walked into the study to see the eye of the sun peeking though the trees, just having gotten above the mountains. The clouds overwhelmed it within minutes, though. It’s only 36F, but no frost. I guess that means we’re back to rain….
I’ve been watching towhees on the feeder. There’s been about 8, but they only show up in ones and two, so it’s hard to know if they’ve been coming back or different ones.
Just as the blog went out yesterday I noticed that the sun had climbed above the cloud layer and was shining on the door curtain. I also forgot that I talked to Graham for awhile on the phone just before we closed Saturday night.
Yesterday was long, as Sundays usually are with the young folks. We got to the shop in plenty of time, after seeing several large flocks of ducks and one heron on the very calm bay and had some time to get things cleaned up and ready.
Once the kids were there we settled in to class, but they were a bit restless again. Brea is doing more astrology with her group. Everyone scattered a bit, talking while we were having lunch, but then most of the young folks helped make incense. We got a batch of Ostara done and it’s setting up…. “aging”… and an Imbolc batch that got done as soon as I finished getting two more parts of frankincense powdered.
Once those were most of the way, Tempus took one group back and grabbed the cinnamon and nutmeg that I forgot on the way back to the shop from the Center. Several of us were prepping the rosemary that I harvested the other day by that time. We got the nutmeg ground and then they headed out.
Afterwards I was catching up on mail while Tempus worked on inventory. We took a break at one point and watched a couple of videos that Amor shared, then he went back to crystals and I finished grinding frankincense and then stirred up the Imbolc.
We didn’t leave the shop until almost 8:30 and by then it was down to 37F. There was an amazing mackerel sky for a bit, and Jupiter and the Moon were in conjunction just past the zenith.
I’m not sure who’s doing what today. If we’re both at the shop, then it’s inventory. If I’m home it’s updates…. I’ll know by 9am, but I’m trying to get this out early!
Today is the Feast of Spenta Armaiti, a divine being in the pantheon of Zoroastrianism, a women’s festival. Spenta Armaiti’s name seems to mean something like “growing universal goodness” or “growing Light” in the New Age sense or even “increasing devotion”. More on this being here: http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/book/feb18.html and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spenta_Armaiti Wall speedwell, Veronica vivensis, is today’s plant, listed on Wikipedia as Veronica Arvensis there’s an article with links here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Speedwell
The shop opens at 11am . Winter hours are 11am-6pm Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! In case of bad weather, check here at the blog for updates, on our Facebook as Ancient Light or call the shop at 541-563-7154.

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion, Ash begins today. The common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).

After a while we took in the clothes,
Nobody said very much.
Just some old wild shirts and a couple pairs of pants
Which nobody really wanted to touch.
Mama come in and picked up a book
An’ Papa asked her what it was.
Someone else asked, “What do you care?”
Papa said, “Well, just because.”
Then they started to take back their clothes,
Hang ’em on the line.
It was January the thirtieth
And everybody was feelin’ fine. – Bob Dylan; ‘Clothes Line’ (1975)
Magick – Ostara Spells & Song
The How Does My Garden Grow Egg Blessing
After you have prepared your garden for planting, take a hard-boiled egg and mark upon it symbols of the earth, growth, and fertility. Browns and greens work especially well here. With your bare hands, dig a small hole in the middle of the planting area while murmuring a prayer to the Goddess of the Earth. Speak from the heart to honor her and ask for her blessings on the garden. Place the egg in the hole and cover it while still repeating your prayer. Walk clockwise three times around the entire perimeter of the garden and chant:
Egg of the Goddess, giver of all things,
Grow my garden abundant this spring.
Strong and sacred this place must be,
Springing forth its bounty, so blessed be.
Return to the center of the garden and cover the egg to bury its magickal energy at the heart of your garden. ~Edain McCoy~
A Planting Ritual
O precious seeds which spring from the earth,
giving us magick, healing and power
I return you to the earth.
Feel My love, feel MY power
as I sow you in this magical and mystical hour!!
Grow with light,
grow with love,
grow with the blessings of the god and goddess above!!
So mote it be.
