It’s hailing or something….that’s what woke me, as it did several times during the night. It’s turning into rain, but it sounds like really messy weather and very, very dark at the moment, even at nearly 9am (yeah, I’m running late). At one point last night I was in the bathroom and I could hear rain thundering on the roof, but when I looked up it was really bright, with the moon shining from behind the clouds. It’s 42F with the wind in the upper teens and gusting into the 20’s.
Yesterday was so busy that I have no idea what the weather was until late in the day. Wicca 101 went pretty well. We’re most of the way through Lesson 7. Brea’s Elements was mostly counseling (through tarot) and astrology.Tempus finished the Ostara incense and put some desiccant in with the Imbolc since it’s still so clumpy.
Tempus made Ramen noodles with chicken and veg for lunch, but we didn’t put the noodles in until 101 was over (so’s to prevent “sog”) and we forgot it, so we had to wait a bit on lunch. The whole crockpot-full, plus a loaf and a 1/2 of bread vanished… inhaled, it seemed like! Tempus and a couple of the young folks packaged quite a bit of the Ostara incense so we have some new stuff.
I did some counseling, myself, and a little of starting the “pins” update for the website, then got to talking with some of the young folks, by which time I had to set up for Practical Craft. We worked on a bunch of things, flax seed and growth habits, correspondences for jonquils and crocus and how they were being dried, hydrangea properties and how to prepare it, even alyssum and how to avoid the prickles. We also spent quite a while getting the roses organized and prepping a few last rosebuds, and talking about the rose bushes. We’re making progress in getting last year’s harvest finished, anyway. There are only 3 baskets of last year’s stuff left in the dryer, but the hanging herbs haven’t really been touched.
After that I did a little sewing and talked to the young folks some more, by which time Tempus was already ferrying them back to the Center. The sun was out by that point. Once they were all back, we did a little on inventory, then came home, ate and went to bed as soon as the bread was done.
Tempus took a header onto the kitchen floor, but even if he’s moving slowly and had a mouth that looked like a squashed plum last evening, (not that you could tell under the moustache…) he’s ok. He’s *never* klutzy, the way I am, but he tripped with his hands full….
With the weather the way it is, I’m hoping that we’re going to keep going on inventory. We’ve incense and crystals to finish, but we’re getting so very close to done….. …and the sun is out… “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes!”
The stone circles of Junapani are near Nagpur in the Indian state of Maharashtra and are dated from 1000 BCE to 300 CE. Megalithic burial monuments exist near the circles and unlike most in Europe contain human remains, and in one case, a horse. Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion, Ash. The common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).

In the Assuming trade three separate and independent cults are transacting business. Two of these cults are known as the Shakespearites and the Baconians, and I am the other one – the Brontosaurian.
The Shakespearite knows that Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare’s Works; the Baconian knows that Francis Bacon wrote them; the Brontosaurian doesn’t really know which of them did it, but is quite composedly and contentedly sure that Shakespeare didn’t, and strongly suspects that Bacon did. We all have to do a good deal of assuming, but I am so fairly certain that in every case I can call to mind the Baconian assumers have come out ahead of the Shakespearites. Both parties handle the same materials, but the Baconians seem to me to get much more reasonable and rational and persuasive results out of them than is the case with the Shakespearites. The Shakespearite conducts his assuming upon a definite principle, an unchanging and immutable law – which is: 2 and 8 and 7 and 14, added together, make 165. I believe this to be an error. No matter, you cannot get a habit-sodden Shakespearite to cipher-up his materials upon any other basis. With the Baconian it is different. Magick – Ostara Recipes

1 (12 ounce) can apricot nectar, chilled
1 1/2 cups orange juice, chilled
2 tablespoons lemon juice
In a pitcher, combine apricot nectar, orange juice, and lemon juice. Serve chilled.
*I would triple this at least!! …but then I’m usually serving 20 or more….
(Serves two people, 30-day supply)
6 Cups each, raw honey and apple cider Vinegar
Heat equal parts (no more than 2 cups of each at a time) of the honey and vinegar in a large non-metal saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon. The honey will melt into the vinegar in a few minutes, making the mixture easier to stir. Keep stirring until you no longer feel heaviness or see any areas of thickness on the spoon (about 15 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes. Pour into canning jars and cap tightly. Store in the refrigerator.
Leek soup – Recipe for Good Health 3/1/5
After a long winter, March is a good time to work a spell that will renew your health. As folk wisdom says:
Eat leeks in March and garlic in May;
And all the year after physicians may play.
Peel three potatoes and place them on a green cloth on your kitchen table. Consider three things you can do to improve your health. Carve on each potato symbols or words regarding your intention. Make a potato leek soup with your magical potatoes. Decorate the table in colors of green and white and a bouquet of daffodils.
4 cups sliced leeks
3 cups sliced potatoes
6 cups chicken broth
1 cup heavy cream
3 T. sherry
Combine potatoes, leeks and broth and cook for 20 minutes. Liquefy in a blender. Add cream, sherry, and chives and cook an additional 5 minutes without boiling, stirring constantly. ~Lily Gardner-Butts
Tarragon Scented Asparagus Vichyssoise (2 views) From:herbalmuse
adapted from Delicious Living Magazine — The sweet aroma of tarragon complements the taste of fresh spring asparagus exceptionally well in this light, refreshing soup.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
1 1/2 pounds asparagus
1 large leek, chopped
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1/2 pound red potatoes, peeled and diced
6 cups light vegetable stock or water
3 tablespoons fresh tarragon, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1. Rinse the asparagus. Gently bend each spear just above the woody bottom section to break off. Discard bottom. Chop the asparagus into 1-inch pieces. Set aside 18 tips to use as a garnish.
2. In a large saucepan, combine asparagus and remaining ingredients except 2 tablespoons of the tarragon. Cover and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat slightly and continue to cook until the potatoes and asparagus are very tender, about 18 minutes. Remove the soup from the heat and remove the lid so that the asparagus doesn’t discolor during cooling.
3. When cool, strain the soup, reserving the liquid. Purée the vegetable mixture in a food processor or blender until very smooth. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl, then whisk in the reserved cooking liquid. Stir the remaining tarragon into the soup. Chill thoroughly, then taste and adjust the seasonings. Serve chilled and garnished with the remaining asparagus spears.
New Mexico Chili Cook-off
If you can read this whole story without laughing, then there’s no hope for you. I was crying by the end. This is an actual account as relayed to paramedics at a chili cook-off in New Mexico.

If you pay attention to the first two judges, the reaction of the third judge is even better.
For those of you who have lived in New Mexico, you know how true this is. They actually have a Chili Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around. It takes up a major portion of a parking lot at the Santa Fe Plaza. Judge #3 was an inexperienced Chile taster named Frank, who was visiting from Springfield , IL.
Frank: Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge’s table, asking for directions to the Coors Light truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Native New Mexicans) that the chili wouldn’t be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge #3.
Here are the scorecard notes from the event:
CHILI # 1 – MIKE’S MANIAC MONSTER CHILI
Judge # 1 — A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.
Judge # 2 — Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.
Judge # 3 (Frank) — Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that’s the worst one. These New Mexicans are crazy.
CHILI # 2 – EL RANCHO’S AFTERBURNER CHILI
Judge # 1 — Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.
Judge # 2 — Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.
Judge # 3 — Keep this out of the reach of children. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.
CHILI # 3 – ALFREDO’S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN CHILI
Judge # 1 — Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick.
Judge # 2 — A bit salty, good use of peppers.
Judge # 3 — Call the EPA. I’ve located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I’m getting sh*t-faced from all of the beer.
CHILI # 4=2 0- BUBBA’S BLACK MAGIC
Judge # 1 — Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.
Judge # 2 — Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.
Judge # 3 — I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This 300 lb. Woman is starting to look HOT … Just like this nuclear waste I’m eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?
CHILI # 5 – LISA’S LEGAL LIP REMOVER
Judge # 1 — Meaty, strong chili. Jalapeno peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.
Judge # 2 — Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the jalapeno peppers make a strong statement.
Judge # 3 — My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I’m burning my lips off. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them.
CHILI # 6 – VARGA’S VERY VEGETARIAN VARIETY
Judge # 1 — Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.
Judge # 2 — The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb.
Judge # 3 — My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I’m worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Sally. Can’t feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.
CHILI # 7 – SUSAN’S SCREAMING SENSATION CHILI
Judge # 1 — A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Judge # 2 — Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. **I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.
Judge # 3 — You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn’t feel a thing. I’ve lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they’ll know what killed me. I’ve decided to stop breathing. It’s too painful. Screw it; I’m not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I’ll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.
CHILI # 8 – BIG TOM ‘S TOENAIL CURLING CHILI
Judge # 1 — The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2 — This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he’s going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he’d have reacted to really hot chili?
