Daily Stuff 3-27-13 Gauri

Hi, folks!

product cafe spell_checker_rectangular_canvas_pillowToday’s shop schedule is a little wonky because of the esbat. We’ll be meeting at 5pm, but actually closing the shop at 6pm.

Minus tides are coming up over the next few days. They’re not really deep, but being that they’re going to be mid-to-late morning, more people will be out there. Be careful, because when the tide turns on a minus tide, you might need to run!

product cafe ankh_isis_ornamentIt’s cloudy with a light breeze and 48F. After today it’s supposed to clear and warm up for a few days. That would be nice.

I’ve been watching chickadees on the feeder, all twitchy-hopping. Right now there’s a sparrow.

Yesterday was a very sleepy start. We got to the shop on time and got open, but Marius called, saying he was running late, because he just woke. Tempus went out to run errands. I had two people for the incense burners workshop and Marius came in during that. Otherwise, no one for the other workshops. We spent a lot of the afternoon talking, especially working out some stuff for Pan-Pagan, about who’s doing what. I finished up some more pouches while we were talking, doing the hand-stitching.

product superwitch buttonWhen Tempus and I closed up it was past sunset and only 42F. We drove up the seawall and the water was that lovely blue-silver color. A large heron was enjoying the sunset, too, standing in the shallows, dark against the silver. We stopped at the park, hoping to see the comet, but the cloud layers made it invisible…. still… drattit…. and it’s down to magnitude 2.3, so unless we get a really clear night we’re gonna miss it…..

product we_are_the_weavers magnetAs we came up the hill, the Moon was playing hide & seek in the clouds, and it never really got dark, since with the Moon so close to full, the night stayed a dim twilight. i went outside at one point during the night and the Moon, seeming very close appeared to be floating in curdling milk. There’s a point, when you’re making scalded milk cheese, where the curds begin to separate and the liquid is becoming clear… just like that.

feast parvati Gauri_029Today’s feast is that of Gauri, one of the names of Parvati, the Great Mother in the Hindu traditions. One of her great festivals is held around this time of year. She is a fertility aspect of goddess, associated with the corn, hence the name “Gauri” which means “fair complexion” and has a lot of different symbolism. This article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parvati has more information, but search for “Gauri” to find the specifics.

plant motif coltsfoot herb Petasites_frigidus_1030Today’s Plant is Coltsfoot, Petasites frigidus var. palmatus. One of the best cough remedies out there, this is often smoked to help cases of chronic bronchitis and asthma. It is also made into cough syrups often combined with horehound. This is another plant where the medicinal and magickal uses seem to go together. Feminine, Venus, water, Magickal uses – Add to love sachets and use in spells of peace and tranquility. Plant Tree Celtic Month FearnAlderFearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14 – Fern – (FAIR-n) – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

Affirmation/Thought for the Day – Taking time to live life will only inspire your work.

Newsletter Journal PromptJournal Prompt – What does this quote say to you? – If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. — Henry David Thoreau

~   You cannot contribute anything to the ideal condition of mind and heart known as Brotherhood, however much you preach, posture, or agree, unless you live it. – Faith Baldwin (1893-1978) US writer
~   You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight-savings time. – Dave Barry
~   You will stay young as long as you learn, form new habits and don’t mind being contradicted. – H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) US writer
~   Your life is something opaque, not transparent, as long as you look at it in an …ordinary human way. But if you hold it up against the light of God’s goodness, it shines and turns transparent, radiant and bright. And then you ask yourself in amazement: Is this really my own life I see before me? – Albert Schweitzer

A Usual Prayer
According to Thy will: That this day only
I may avoid the vile
and baritone away in a broader chorus
of to each other decent forebearance & even aid.

Merely sensational let’s have today,
lacking mostly thinking, —
men’s thinking being eighteen-tenths deluded.
Did I get this figure out of St Isaac of Syria?

For fun: find me among my self-indulgent artbooks
a new drawing by Ingres!
For discipline, two self-denying minus-strokes
and my wonted isometrics, barbells, & antiphons.

Lord of happenings, & little things,
muster me westward fitter to my end —
which has got to be Your strange end for me —
and toughen me effective to the tribes en route.  ~ John Berryman ~ (Collected Poems)

Pentacle of ElementsMagick – Soul Mandala – You will need large square piece of wood, items that represent different aspects of your soul (i.e. mother, healer, teacher, speaker, solitude, etc..) and a central object that represents your expanded self as a whole. First, using a pencil, draw a border around the wood. Make the border about 3-4 inches wide all around. Within the smaller square (created by the line you just drew) divide it into as many equal sized squares as will fit (should be 6-12). In each square, decorate it as one aspect of yourself. Get in touch with as many “selves” as you can and represent them each visually. In the border around these, seperate it into sections to represent the cycles of life. You can divide it into four sections and decorate it for the seasons. Or divide in into 13 sections and represent each of the moons. There’s no wrong way to do this project. It’s all yours.

Prophet Pebbles, Pagan Crafting [Note: original source unknown]

Select three small stones or pebbles of approximately the same size and shape – but of very different colors. You may use any stones you feel gives off good vibrations to you and can mark them accordingly.

From these — choose one stone to represent the Indicator — one for Yes and one for No. Your stones will keep their meanings you assign them.

Next, ask a question that can be answered yes or no. Shake the stones like dice and throw them. The stone nearest the indicator is the answer. The closer the stone is to the indicator the more definite is your answer.

When you become adept at interpreting the positions, you can add another stone to represent maybe. If the maybe stone is between the indicator and either the yes or no stone, the answer is probably yes or probably no.

Keep your stones in their own pouch or container. You may use them to answer questions for other people, but allow no one else to handle them.

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – Q – How many Zen Buddhists does it take to change a light bulb? A – Two. One to change it, one not to change it.
