Daily Stuff 3-29-13 Ishtar

Hi, folks!

Minus tide again this morning, just before 9am!

motif Magick CandleCandle Day! That’s what we’re doing most of the day, starting with Herbal Candles, then Sand Candles with the kids and finishing up with Wood Butter (a product for re-finishing/refurbishing old wooden utensils with a safe finish.

Rain Hat & UmbrellaIt’s really grey and drippy outside, although sunrise was pretty, a study in greys and golds. It’s 46F and the winds are calm. There’s been sparrows on the feeder, mostly. The rain is making the red of the budding alder stand out against the green of the pines and cedars.

fossil clam032813Yesterday went pretty well. It was quiet. Even the customers were quiet! After I bagged some fossil clams that a customer had donated, we started working on the rest of the luffa stuff and progressed to making the chalk eggs. More luffas needed to be cut and some more hung up to dry and the cores cut into bits for “gardeners’ scrubbie soap”.  After that I sorted the kids’ craft supplies. We’re missing some that still need to be tracked down (where’d the box of stencils go?), but I even have bags that can be pulled out when we have a small person in the shop, or some small person who needs a non-messy activity.

biscornu 032813ADuring the afternoon I worked on some sewing projects (remember the biscornu?) and then on luffas. We have a number of rounds that are cleaned and drying and hanging with the herbs and some flat parts, plus a whole basket tray of bits and pieces.

We spent awhile very late in the day sorting another stack of papers, catalogs and odds & ends. I found some “mend” jewelry pieces, too. We finally closed up around 8pm and had to stop at Ray’s on the way home.

Late in the afternoon we got word the Oso had Crossed. Rose said she was going to go home to sleep until she was able to wake back up. It’s been hard on her and on Sasha. Our sympathies go out to them and please send good energy so that they can recover.

biscornu 032813BIt clouded up quite thickly around 6pm, but there were holes in the clouds enough to still see twilight and the occasional star.

Coming up the front walk I started singing to the tune of “Moonlight Bay”. “I just stagger along, to my front door, my feet are really aching, my back is sore” and cracked myself up. <sigh> I guess I’m easily amused!

motif plant flower desert fivespotI spent at least an hour hunting all though all the pictures that I have and discovered that, yes indeed, some of them are definitely missing. It’s a whole file of historical costume stuff from one of my classes… and the pix are nowhere to be found. I’m going to have to track them all down again or find the handout and get ’em scanned. It’s been just one or two before that I knew that I had, but now they’re all in one place. Oh, well….

motif plant flower echinacea herbTempus made me one of his special fried egg sandwiches for supper. I don’t know why they’re so delicious, but they are. He doesn’t get it either, and keeps saying they’re nothing special.

feast Ishtar_Eshnunna_Louvre_AO12456Ishtar is a Middle Eastern goddess of love and sex. When she descends to the Underworld, meeting with Erishkigalm all sex ceases on the earth.

If she (Ishtar) will not grant thee her release,
To Tammuz, the lover of her youth,
Pour out pure waters, pour out fine oil;
With a festival garment deck him that he may play on the flute of lapis lazuli,
That the votaries may cheer his liver. [his spirit]
Belili [sister of Tammuz] had gathered the treasure,
With precious stones filled her bosom.
When Belili heard the lament of her brother, she dropped her treasure,
She scattered the precious stones before her,
“Oh, my only brother, do not let me perish!
On the day when Tammuz plays for me on the flute of lapis lazuli, playing it for me with the porphyry ring.
Together with him, play ye for me, ye weepers and lamenting women!
That the dead may rise up and inhale the incense.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar

220px-Digitalis-stora_hultrum.sweden-24Today’s plant is Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea. It is naturalized in the PNW, being native to Europe, not the Americas. Digitalis was one of the first heart medications and was extracted from the plant and then synthesized. The plant is poisonous, not just because of this (too much causes irregular heartbeat), but some other chemicals. Also known as Lady’s Glove, Witches’ Gloves, Fairy Fingers, or Dead Men’s Bells. A Druid sacred herb associated with the “little people”. Lust, protection, decision, grow in a garden for protection of house and yard, reveals insincerity. Flower meaning – a wish, “I am not ambitious for myself but for you”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitalis_purpurea

Plant Tree Celtic Month FearnAlderFearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14 – Fern – (FAIR-n) – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

A Year and a Day
Circle arrayed and circle conclaved
Identified with Seven lovers myria’d
Triple cleansed through smoke, salt, and ash
Unto Their midst the words gain you pass
Kissed upon centers secretly blossomed
Sing Her praises in words long forgotten

To let the spirits rip and rend apart
Or step between the pillars light and dark
Then to be rebuilt with ochre’d clay
Or become the dawn’s dancing day
To ascend the heavens bringing fire down
Or sup from His radiant emerald brow
To stand alone amid the dark of night
Or be gathered within the coven’s light
To howl against the ageless wind
Or bind Her kiss deep within
To swear against the point of kris
Or glow within a Samadhic bliss

Passing through pylons, taking ordeals to task
Looking at your Selves through shrouded glass
To initiate is to begin, the Work is at hand
Sorcerer, Witch, and Magus unfurl the plan
And take again what was yours before
Proudly stepping through the oaken door. – Ed Novem Grey

May all beings of the world
May all beings of the world have fresh clean water to drink.
May all beings of the world
May all beings of the world have food & a home.
May all beings of the world have someone to share love with.
May all beings of the world know their true purpose.
May all beings of the world
May all beings of the world be well & happy right now.
May all beings of the world
May all beings of the world be free from suffering.

And today I shall do all that I can do to make it so.
To make it so.
To make it so.
To make it so.
