Dim and green and 50F. I’m betting from the sound of it that we’re going to have sun at least mid-day, but possibly light rain tonight.
I got outside far enough ahead of Tempus and Amor yesterday morning to start weeding out some of the hawkweed that’s near the street. I did my “daily dozen” which starts this time of year when the stuff is finally visible in the grass. If I can keep it up for a week or so, the most of the stuff will be killed out of the grass patch near the weigelia and be done for a couple of years. We got the shop open and started talking…and talking. <grin> Sash showed up mid-afternoon and we kept on talking. Finally Sash and his buddy Josh “kidnapped” Amor to go exploring and then ended up doing a barbeque out in the woods.
I got a bunch of herbs sorted, very late in the day, and got a couple of orders placed, one from the guy who does the wonderful sage smudges. Tempus and I finally closed up around 8pm, came home, ate and went to bed. When the kids came in they fed us gummy worms and we talked some more. I know they were up for quite a while after that.
I need to get someone chased out to the rugosa this morning to harvest. There’s a couple of cupfuls of petals on the bush. Rose shortbread if we get enough! I also need to harvest petals from the red rosebush on the south side of the house. I saw yesterday that what weren’t even buds on Monday were blown.
Today is the Waldport Great Garage Sale. We’ll have some stuff out in front of the shop and so will Hunt Gather, who do mostly furniture. Today’s schedule is:

Today’s Plant is Skunk Cabbage, Lysichitum americanum. This is one of the signs of spring here on the coast, where every drainage ditch or marshy field has it’s glow of brilliant yellow and bright, deep green. It is a famine food with a spicy or peppery taste, but contains calcium oxalate, which can upset the insides and even cause death if you get too much. Bears eat it after hibernation to get their intestines working again. It is used to cure sores and swellings, particularly after winter, when starvation conditions make these things immensely worse. However the typical use of the local peoples of this herb was to line baskets with the huge leaves to keep things from bruising or dropping through and to wrap around foods when baked under a fire, where it imparts a distinctive taste to the crust. Cunningham’s Encyclopedia references Eastern Skunk Cabbage, which is a different plant with a red flower, but the magicks are the same, Symplocarpus foetidus – Feminine, Saturn, Water – Carry when you have legal troubles, or keep in the drawer with the filed papers. Wrap in a bay leaf on a Sunday to draw good fortune. Celtic Tree Month of Saille/Willow Apr 15 – May 12 – The Willow in the Tree alphabet stands for the female and lunar rhythms of life. God & Goddess Rattle – You will need: coping saw, 1 deer antler, base intact, 100 grit sandpaper, 8 1/3 yards thins suede thong or a 1 x 20 inch strip of thin suede, 40 small cowrie shells, predrilled if possible, small drill or swiss army knife with awl blade. Saw a 6-8 inch piece of the antler for the handle. Sand the edges of the cut end of the handle to eliminate any sharp burrs. Cut the thong into 18×20 inch lengths and cut both ends of each thong into tapering points. Tie each thong to the base end of the antler securely with a square knot. Drill or carefully enlarge predrilled holes in the shells to allow the leather thong to pass through. Herbal Energy Sachets – You will need 4 inch squares in assorted colors and patterns, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, ginger, and 1/4 inch ribbon. In a small bowl, mix the spices until you are pleased with the scent. Place one heaping tablespoon of the mixture in the center of each fabric square. Herbal Altar Pentacle – You will need: 4-5 blocks bakeable clay in color of your choice, 3-4 tbsp. dried herbs of choice (sage, wormwood, patchouli, basil, and mugwort are good), round piece of wood or cork in your choice of size, cookie sheet, hot glue sticks or hot glue gun. Using your fingers, mix the herbs into the clay. Divide the clay into five equal portions, then form them into long rolls by rubbing them between your palms. Position them on the wood or cork to form a five pointed star; join the smooth ends together, trimming if necessary. Remove the star from the round piece and place it on the baking sheet. Bake the star according to the package directions.
