Daily Stuff 5-26-13 Fontinalia

Hi, folks!

Waves tide 2.3 minus tide at 8:23am. The clammers are going to be out in force!

It seems as though it’s been the same weather for days. It’s 51F and calm this morning, overcast, and predicting rain.

motif plant flower geraniumI didn’t get to my daily dozen yesterday morning because I was harvesting. I got a lot of peppermint, pinching back stuff from the window boxes, even some lemon balm and then I went down into the garden and harvested buttercups and bits and pieces all the way to the car.

motif plant flower gingerFirst thing I got the work table cleaned out and pulled out and set up the Herbs Workshop. We had half a dozen looking in, but just Tempus and me actually working. I got the drying rack emptied and re-filled a step at a time, because all the blossoms are more than dry enough, with the exception of the buttercups that I’ve been harvesting steadily. I got the roses done and hung some labels on the baskets, so that no one would get them mixed up this year. I had more bags of “mixed rose petals”…. <sigh> No one was in for Crystals, so I just kept working. I had put away a dozen or so dried herbs, when I had a reading. After that I processed the lungwort and put away some of the spring blossoms, but I told Tempus to go crash for awhile.

motif plant flower hippeastrumThen it got busy. We had a lot of folks out and about for the holiday and the weather cleared up to “sunny”, with a lot of high haze. Lots of folks out walkin’ ‘n’ shoppin’. I worked on pictures between times and then started in with some of my embroidery, since it was Sewing Workshop time.

motif plant flower hyacinthOnce Tempus was up I went in the back to work on herbs some more and then lay down for a rest. I did another reading late in the afternoon. We had folks in even after closing, so we got out of there around 8pm. It was cloudy again by then and around 53F. Tempus made scrambled eggs and mushrooms with salad for supper and we crashed right after. I would have stayed up to process the pictures that I took, but realized that I had to do that from the shop computer, not in the home computer. I must have been more tired than I thought!

motif plant flower jimsonweedWe’ll be at the shop early today, because of class. Tempus may be elsewhere during the afternoon, since a friend needs some help. I’ll get those pix done, so I can put ’em into tomorrow’s newsletter.

Today’s feast is the Fortinalia, or sacred well day. It was celebrated in 220px-Puteal_báquico_(M.A.N._Madrid)_01ancient Rome on October 13 and pagans today keep the feast in May as a thank you to the wells that give us clean water and to the wells of inspiration that we dip from to create our magick. Usually flowers and ribbons are brought to the wells. I’ve done clean-ups around artesian springs on this day, too, and the pipe that has awesome spring water out rt. 34, usually has a bouquet and a dozen ribbons every year! More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontinalia

Plant Herb BlackberryToday’s plant is the Pacific Blackberry, Rubus ursinus. There are several species of blackberries that grow in the PNW, the nasty invasive one being the Himalayan blackberry, Rubus armeniacus. Ursinus (from the Latin for “bear”) also has narrower leaves and reddish canes. It is the ancestor of Marionberries, Boysenberries & parent of Loganberries, too. Feminine, Venus, Water, Brigit, Healing, Money, Protection – Carry leaves for money, use blackberry leaves in spring water as healing for burns, in incense for Lughnasadh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_blackberry

Litha PentacleThe shop opens at 11am, but we’ll be there earlier for class! Spring hours are 11am-7pm Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! In case of bad weather, check here at the blog for updates, on our Facebook as Ancient Light or call the shop at 541-563-7154.

Astro mercuryafter sunset. Three bright planets, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter, form a 2-degree equilateral triangle in the western sky just after sunset. They are bunched their tightest this evening, forming a little triangle just 2° on a side. Look in the northwest 30 or 40 minutes after sunset. Think photo opportunity. They are forming a new configuration each evening. They’re magnitudes –1, –4, and –2, respectively. From the 24th through 29th the three form a “trio,” fitting in a circle 5° in diameter. Mercury and Venus appear closest together, just under 1½° apart, on the 23rd and 24th. Venus and Jupiter are closest, 1° apart, on the 28th. See our article The May-June Planet Dance. http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/highlights/The-May-June-2013-Planet-Dance-192020551.html
Astro jupiterJupiter (magnitude –2.0, in Taurus) continues its stay in Taurus and is the first “star” to come out in the west after sunset, a little lower every day. It descends in the evening and sets around 10 or 11 p.m. Above Jupiter is El Nath (Beta Tauri). Much farther to Jupiter’s upper right is bright Capella.  In a telescope, Jupiter has shrunk to a disappointing 33 arcseconds wide, about as small as it ever gets.
Astro venus
The best time to view Venus at high power in a telescope is in late afternoon well before sunset, when it’s still at a high altitude in relatively steady air. All week Mercury and Jupiter are in the same vicinity, but they’re tougher catches in broad daylight. Pick them up them using the day-by-day finder chart for all three above the afternoon Sun in the JuneSky & Telescope, page 51.
Astro neptuneNeptune (magnitude 7.9, in Aquarius) is in the southeast just before dawn begins.

Hawthorn – Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. – Curtis Clark

BLANCHE AND THE WITCHES BREW,  (A Salem-Turnopia Tale) part 1
Stop throwing rocks at my cat!
You’ll be very very sorry if you don’t…
See, I told you!  She turns into a
Black bobcat when she gets mad.
Yeah, just keep on running, jerk!

Are you hurt, Tory-girl?  I hope none
Of the rocks hit you.  You will feel
Better when we go out on my
Broomstick tonight.  You know how
You love it, unless I turn upside
Down, heehee!

The formation group isn’t gonna
Meet tonight, so we won’t have to do
All those swoops and things that
Make you nauseous.  I have been
Feeling restless lately, I think I need
A new boyfriend….  We can fly
Around and see what we can find.
It’s been a long time since you’ve
Had a boyfriend either, hasn’t it?
Well, maybe we’ll get lucky tonight.
I sure hope Blanche isn’t gonna
Be out tonight, you know how she is,

If she drinks too much witches brew!
She has a tendency to carry off men,
Have her way with them, and then
Drop them into high trees on her way
Back home. And she wears the same
Boring clothes that she hangs out of.

Things in Salem-Turnopia are never
Quiet when Blanche is around. The
Broomstick Formation group won’t
Even let her join because of her little
Drinking problem. She is my first
Cousin, so I usually get the joyless
Job of trying to sober her up.

She almost always throws up on me,
So I try to be nowhere around when
She is drinking, so someone else has
To clean up after her! It’s always:
Cally, come clean up after your cousin!
Sometimes family sucks.

Tory’s a shape-shifter and can turn
Into a bobcat, and sometimes a black
Owl at night. Our little town of Salem-
Turnopia is a haven for all sorts of
Witches and magickal people. We get
Along fine with the townspeople

For the most point, as long as nothing
Gets blown up. We do protect them
From all kinds of monsters, too. Some-
Times we intermarry with the townspeople,
But most of us don’t, because we don’t
Want to dilute our strong witchy powers.

Some of us can trace our witchy roots
Back to Adam and either Eve or Lilith,
His first wife. So we are proud of our
Lineage and even have a Salem-Turnopia
Witches Genealogy group! This is a
Very cultured place, we have all kinds of
Leagues and groups.

Anyway, I’m getting off the subject again,
I need to get home and dress up so that
Tory and I can go out flying and trolling
Tonight (for men and shape-shifters, not
Trolls), hahaha! I’m so funny. I usually
Put a collar on Tory to match my outfit,
She loves that, the fancier the better.

Tory and I were back in my bedroom,
Getting ready for a night out on my broomstick.
I wanted to be able to blend into the shadows
If we had to make a quick getaway for some
Reason, but black was so overdone. So I
Decided on Midnight Blue instead, with a

Sequin top, leggings, and high heel boots.
I put a sequined blue collar on Tory, and we
Were set. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, my
Cousin Blanche wears so much that it would
Take a long hot bath of two weeks to get it
Off, along with a bunch of scraping knives.

Blanche has gotten me in too much trouble
To be on my favorites list. Instead, she is
On my @#&^%* list. I think you can figure
Out for yourselves what the symbols mean!
Thank Goddess she hasn’t gotten me kicked
Out of the Salem-Turnopia broomstick

(Yet, anyway) and I intend to keep it that way.
I picked out my favorite riding broom, Tory
Held onto it, and we were on our way. By the
Way, Tory talks to me with telepathy. Since
She is my familiar, naturally I can understand
Her. There are a few guys that are animal

Shape-shifters around here, but they are not
Easy to find. Usually, only one shape-
Shifter can recognize another. Outwardly,
They just look like very handsome black cats.
Or beautiful, in the case of Tory. *Thanks*
You’re welcome, Tory.

We flew over to my friend Lili’s house. Of
Course, I could have just called her on her
Cell phone or used my crystal ball, but I
Preferred to go there in person. She always
Knows if any parties or rituals or other events
Are going on. And Tory gets along fine with

Her male familiar, Dander. You can guess
Where he got that name; she had to use anti-
Dandruff shampoo on him, and never let him
Forget it. She suggested that we try one
Of the magickal people’s night club hangouts,
Like The Hot Cauldron, or the Bloodie Mary
Bar and Inn.

So we set out for the Hot Cauldron, and a
Night of drinking, dancing, flirting and loudness.
I’m not real loud actually, but Lili is. It was
In full swing, lots of dancing people. We
Went up to the bartender, Phil and ordered
Fuzzy Warts on the rocks. We like them

Better than fuzzy navels. Phil is very
Imaginative when it comes to drink names.
One that makes me to sick just to think of

It, is the Pulverized Grasshopper. It is just
A regular Grasshopper drink with ground
Up cinnamon, nutmeg, and some vodka in

It, but it sounds so awful that I can’t drink it.
We found some cute guys to dance with
(Although we didn’t know yet if they were male

Witches or vampires). Not all vampires are
Bad, you know. We have all kinds and degrees
Of “Magickals” here in Salem-Turnopia.

Just as we were really getting in the spirit of
Some Western boot-kickin’ music, guess who
Showed up. Yep… Blanche. Guess somebody
Told her that the action was at the Hot Cauldron
Tonight. I was hoping someone would side-
Track her before she got to Phil, but no luck.

She headed right to him, and asked for the
House Witches Brew. Why she couldn’t ask
For the House Wine or the House Beer, I don’t
Know. This was ruining my evening fast!
Maybe it was time to get out of here, before all
Hell broke loose. I hated to let a cute guy

Go to waste, and Tory and Dander were in
The broom closet with our brooms and maybe
Getting it on…but I had to leave before she
Got drunk and started throwing up or changing
People into things. Once she got mad at a
Girl who was dancing with a guy she liked,

And changed her to two feet tall; it lasted a
Year before it wore off. Poor girl. So you see,
Blanche was capable of anything. And as sure
As my hat is pointed, trouble was like the eye
Of a tornado, hovering right over the Hot
Cauldron; and yours truly, her first cousin. – © Copyright 10/22/05, Beth Johnson (Mystic Amazon)

Subject: [Hearth_Witch] Midsummer Traditions

Midsummer Traditions

Midsummer has always been a time for celebration and dancing. Traditionally, there were bonfires to celebrate the Sun. The bonfires were believed to have the power to burn away all negativity and evil. People jumped the flames, much as they had at Beltane, making wishes. It was believed that the summer grains would grow only as high as they were able to jump. The Celts built their bonfires near holy wells or on a border or boundary of some sort because they considered borders to be magickal entrances to the Underworld. In some places, people light fires on midsummer eve. They stay up until midnight to welcome in midsummer day, and, when the fires die down, men run or jump through the embers to bring good luck.

Ancient Pagans had a custom for Midsummer which consisted of wrapping straw around the wheel of a cart, lighting it on fire, and then rolling it down a tall hill. These flaming wheels were called “Catherine Wheels” and they emulated the action of the sun, which would begin waning after Midsummer day. If the fire went out before the wheel got to the bottom of the hill, it indicated a good harvest.

Since Midsummer is both a time of protection and of divination, in  ancient times, the rootstock of a male fern plant was trimmed into the likeness of a hand and smoked in the Midsummer fires. These ‘Hands of Glory’ were hung in houses for protection. It was said that if the hands glowed with a blue flame, they were revealing hidden treasure in the earth.

There is still a famous summer solstice celebration at Stonehenge, the ancient stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. On the night before midsummer, a group of white-robed Druids gather at Stonehenge to watch the sun rising. As it comes up, the sun rises exactly over the Heel Stone, one of the stones that lies outside the main circle at Stonehenge.

Many midsummer celebrations were moved to the feast of St John the Baptist (24th June). But since Midsummer was a time of magic and wonder-working, evil spirits were said to appear, and people gathered herbs and flowers to protect themselves. One of the most powerful was the plant known as ‘chase-devil’, which we now call St John’s Wort. People used it in potions, and wove the flowers into garlands to decorate their houses or protect their farm animals. They believed that the herb could shield them from the power of evil spirits and could help them foretell the future. ~author unknown
