It’s awfully messy out there. It’s not raining as hard as yesterday, nor blowing as hard, but it’s definitely raining and blowing. 50F. It makes it good go-back-to-bed weather…..
By the time we left for the shop yesterday, the wind had picked up to waterpik weather status. It was pretty nasty. I did some vegetable bondage before Tempus came out of the house, tying up the flax stems so that they don’t hit us in the head. One of the stems is starting to bloom and there must be 8 of them, at least. The plant is a New Zealand flax, and is getting huge. The plant pot said grows to 3 feet across…. that’s radius, not diameter, I guess, and the flower stalks are minimum 8 feet tall. Summer before last I didn’t tie them and we tripped over one getting home for several weeks.
Tempus was up for a bit and then crashed in back while I started working on OCPPG lists. I’ll be doing more on those today, but it was the same nagging for info that I’ve been doing since the beginning of the month. 🙂
Once Tempus was up, I got a nap, but it was a slow day. I think we had fewer than 5 people in and even the highway was quiet, probably because of the weather, even though it had calmed down by early afternoon. I spent a large chunk of the afternoon working on pictures of the rings, then went to develop them and discovered that only three of 56 pictures were un-blurry, and I have no idea why. Late in the afternoon, Paul called and we had a far-ranging chat on everything from self-work to writing to group dynamics to art, that lasted until past 9:30! At that point we closed up and came home, ate and collapsed.
Tempus is going to be working at that friend’s place during the afternoon. I have newsletter stuff, OCPPG stuff and more pictures to work on during the day and I’m hoping to spend a little time cooking, since I want to set up a bean/rice soup for the week and maybe make some chicken parmigiana, and there are all the usual chores for the week that have to happen today, since tomorrow is the 2nd half of the Intensive.
Today is the date in 585 BC on which the Greek philosopher and scientist Thales predicted a solar eclipse would occur. This is one of the cardinal dates from which other dates can be calculated since eclipses can be calculated pretty exactly. The Battle of the Eclipse was fought on this date. It is called that because it ended abruptly as the eclipse was considered to be a sign from the gods, and therefore recorded. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Halys_(585_BC)
Today’s plant is New Zealand Flax, Phormium Tenax. This is a very different plant from common flax or linseed, Linum usitatissimum. It is used mostly as an ornamental in the northern hemisphere, but at one time sustained a lively trade as a fiber. While the two plants are very different, they have similar magickal properties. These days the fiber is mostly used by paper artisans. – Masculine, Mercury, Fire, Hulda – Money spells, add to coins and carry, flax in the shoe averts poverty. For protection while asleep, add to mustard seed, put both opposite cold water. Protection from evil entering, scatter with red pepper by door. Health and healing rituals, sprinkle altar with flaxseed. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phormium For the traditional uses of the plant fiber http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_flax
The shop is closed on Tuesday/Wednesday, ‘coz we need a weekend, too! Spring hours are 11am-7pm Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! In case of bad weather, check here at the blog for updates, on our Facebook as Ancient Light or call the shop at 541-563-7154.

Hawthorn – Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. – Curtis Clark

BLANCHE AND THE WITCHES BREW, (A Salem-Turnopia Tale) part 3
The Hot Cauldron is on the edge of
Salem-Turnopia, so the ogres and trolls that
Were chasing Blanche and the weres, would
Be coming by here on the way into town.
Plus ogres and trolls could probably smell
Them under their witches brew.
It is remarkable that the ogres and troll have
Such a good sense of smell, since they smell
Pretty rank themselves…uggggh and ewww!
Now that we were warned and knew that
Trouble (naturally, around Blanche) was on
The way, we had to figure out some sort of
We could just run like hell for our lives,
And leave Blanche and the weres to their
Fate. But then my aunt would NOT be happy
With me, and it is never a good idea to make
A witch angry.
I have this slogan: “Never mess with a witch
Unless they tell you too; then you had
BETTER!” My aunt Prudy, like my mother,
Is an Elder in the Salem-Turnopia Witches
League. That means she knows umpteen
Spells and just as many curses.
So, we all stayed, which might be a surprise
To an outsider, but the “Magickals” here are
Very close. And besides, we didn’t want them
Taking the fight into the town. The mayor
Would throw us all in the clink first, and ask
Questions later. And the police use bespelled
While the others were setting up a barricade
Of tables and chairs (ha), I slipped away and
Called my mother on my cell phone. I told her
The whole sordid story. She knows about
Blanche’s little drinking problem, everyone does,
Except my Aunt Prudy goes into denial about
It except when she catches Blanche in the
(hiccup) act. I told her that we could hear
Shouting in the distance and were all terrified,
So she said she would gather all the other
Witches and beat feet…oops, I mean beat
Broomsticks, over there in an extreme hurry.
My mom comes through when needed, I am
Very lucky that way. She and my dad are both
Witches, but she doesn’t tell dad about things
Like this, since he tends to worry about me
And come unglued. I am an only child, as is
Blanche, another reason I always seemed to get
Stuck with her.
It would help if she would stay sober and out
Of married mens’ beds. But nooooo. She never
Learns. She has been cursed by angry wives so
Often, that she has become very good at a strong
Shielding Spell. Unfortunately, she can’t make
It work if she is drunk. Sigh.
I made a quick trip to the broom closet to tell
Tory and Dander what was going on. That way,
If they chose to get on one of the brooms and
Stay out of the fracas, they could do so. They
Decided to stay, but to come out if we needed a
Couple of big black bobcats to help us.
They also reminded me that they could change
Into black owls, so they were not helpless.
Things were getting pretty messy in the club,
Ogres smashing things, and blood, and folk
Avoiding their clubs, vampires and weres
Trying to bite them, etc. Nerve wracking.
At least nobody had gotten killed, but it could
Happen. Just as it was in full swing, a whole
Slew of witches showed up, broomsticks, wands,
And all. Lady Emeralde, the High Witch, was
In front. My mother winked at me from behind
Her. “STOP!” She yelled, and put forth her wand,
And threw a wave of motion that knocked every-
One down. She did get our attention. So we
Stopped running for our lives, hiding, or fighting.
“All right,” she said, “I want you to get two
Representatives, one for the ogres and trolls, and
One for the rest of you. I am granting you an
Audience and calling a Magickal high court. Make
It snappy!” No one thought of disagreeing with
Her. An ogre came forward as leader for their group,
And one of the vampire men (a lawyer, in fact) was
Chosen for the representative of the rest of us.
Actually, he was more the counsel for Blanche
And the weres, since they were the ones that had
Started it. The ogres went first, telling how their
Peace had been invaded, their land torn up by
Motorcycles, and their babies woken up and
Wailing. Then it was the turn of Chuck, the lawyer.
He did the ‘diminished capacity’ defense, about how
The witches brew was to blame, and they should
Not have been served so many drinks, and so forth.
Like any bartender was going to tell a bunch of
Werewolf bikers, “No”… I don’t think so! When
Everyone was through, Lady Emeralde said that she
Needed to confer with the officers of her League.
So we all pitched in with little grumbling (no one
Crossed the High Witch) and put the tables and
Chairs back, that weren’t too broken. Then we sat
Down and waited, while they talked. After about
An hour, they came out of their huddle. “Here are
My pronouncements,” said Lady Emeralde.
“I find that the trolls and ogres and their families
Have indeed been wronged. This being the fault
Only of Blanche and the Werewolves. So, here is
My decree. Blanche and the weres will pay damages
Both to the trolls and ogres, and to the owner of
The Hot Caldron. I will discuss it with the ogre
Leader and the bar owner, and come up with what
Is a fair sum. Anyone that cannot afford cash, will
Work it off. Work in the bar, work in the fields
Near the troll and ogre encampment, and even
Babysit the babies whose sleep they disturbed.
Blanche, your drinking problems are well known
Around Salem-Turnopia, I think notorious would
Not be too weak a word. You will enter Witches
Rehab in a larger town… and do not dare to come
Back until you have kicked your addiction to
Witches Brew. Now, straighten this place up, and
Lady Emeralde grandly stalked toward her broom,
The other witches following her; and they sailed
Off into the night sky. All except Aunt Prudy, that
Is, who boxed Blanche’s ears and made sure she
Went home without a werewolf in tow. Lili and
I said goodbye to the guys, making plans to meet
Them in a couple of nights. We were happy about
Blanche going into rehab, and out of our hair for
Awhile. We got Dander and Tory, and headed out
For home on our brooms. It had been a very
Exciting evening, but we wanted to go to bed and
Just think about our new beaus and get a good
Nights’ sleep. – © Copyright 10/22/05, Beth Johnson (Mystic Amazon)
Magick – Litha Studies
Sun Meditation – Thorn Coyle????
Were I with you now, we would drum and dance and I would invite you to the center of the circle to invoke the sun and to dance the sun’s energy, to feel its heat on your skin, to work up a sweat and to call it into you until you were running with it, hot, vibrant, vital.
If it is a sunny day, go stand outside once you are done reading this section. If it is not sunny out, remember a day when it was, when the sun burned bright above you and warmed your shoulders. Feel it even on a rainy, snowy, or foggy day. It still adds brightness behind the clouds or foe that obscure it. The sun is out there, steadily flaming as we move in an arcing dance around it, drawn by its warmth and the turning pull of gravity.
Take a deep breath. Close your eyes for a moment and feel the sun. Turn yourself so you face it. Begin to breathe. Imagine that you can breathe in the power of the sun, its heat, it: power. Take it into your belly. Tet yourself begin to move with it. Dance the dance of the sun. If this feels uncomfortable to you, being outside, just take this in, storing it for later, when you can dance the dance of the sun. Call the sun down, call it into your circle. Dance the sun in. Dance it. Sing it. Drum it. What does the sun feel like? Call it in, call it down. You are full of the sun. It is no longer outside of you. You can communicate with it. You can dance with it. You have touched the sun just as the sun touches you. Dance with the sun for a while. You are radiant beauty, powerful, life giving, and strong.
Take another breath. Begin to slow down. Feel your skin become your own, and feel the sun recede beyond your reach. It still warms and feeds you, but it is far outside of you again. Feel your body, human and alive. Breathe in and out. You are beautiful. Thank the sun. Blow it a kiss. Align your Triple Soul with the energy running through you. Blessed be.
Summer Invocation by Trish Telesco – http://www.fortunecity.com/greenfield/tigris/567/id20.htm
Fireflies and summer sun
in circles round
we become as one.
Singing songs at magick’s hour
we bring the winds
and timeless powers.
Turning inward, hand in hand
we dance the hearth
to heal the land.
Standing silent, beneath the sky
we catch the fire
from out God’s eye.
Swaying breathless, beside the sea
we call the Goddess
so mote it be!
(This can be used as a chant, part of a spiral dance, or to invoke quarters.)
