I hurried to the car yesterday morning and didn’t even check the blueberries! I had dozed back off sitting at the computer, so we were a bit late again. We got the shop open and Tempus went to work sorting out the walkways in back which had gotten squeezed, while I waited for my reading appointment to show. She didn’t. I did another reading later, though.
I had forgotten the flash drive with the stuff that I needed to print, so I worked on the schedule for a bit… I’ve got a couple of people that I keep putting their classes on top of each other…..but it’s a long way towards done.
At that point he went home and I spent quite a while sorting several boxes of office supplies. They’re old enough that the ballpoints needed help getting started, but I can do those one or two at a time and once they’re working, they tend to stay working for a while.
There weren’t a ton of customers in yesterday, but it was steady. One person that had some crystals on hold came in after them and got a bunch more. I talked quite a lot to one fellow about crystals, as well. A a lady was in later that stopped for awhile to chat about incense. We had maybe 25 folks, through.
5-ish everything just slowed way down. Even the highway did! By 6pm I was seeing the fog line moving in and by 7 it was trying to block the sun. It stopped over the Bay, but hung in the trees all around and by the time we got home it was “overcast at 100 feet”.
Today we have the usual chores to do and then Tempus is to go to that friend’s place where he cleans. I’m hoping to get some computer issues fixed.
Today’s Feast is in honor of the Loch Ness Monster. Yesterday was the anniversary of the date in 1933 when interest was roused in the larger public, although stories about it seem to exist back to the 6th century, or were those attached to Nessie later. There are photos and films, sonar investigations and all kinds of evidence of something, but what is it? The monster is a cryptid, a critter that no one is sure exists! Some people believe it is a real creature. Some folks will tell you it’s all a hoax. <shrug> If I see it, I’ll tell you! There’s a lovely long article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Ness_Monster
Today’s Plant is Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium), which grows mostly at low to middle elevations in soil enriched by decaying wood and on rotten logs, all over the coast range. It is a deciduous shrub growing to 13 ft tall with a small, edible red to blue-black berry. The local peoples ate, dried, stewed and made sauces from this berry which was one of their staple foods. The bark is a cold remedy. The leaves make a good tea. I make jam of the berries, which also make a tasty tea. Both berries and leaves are good for sore throats, aching teeth and inflamed gums. It’s sometimes used as an ornamental, but it doesn’t take well to getting the roots disturbed. Gender, Feminine – Planet, Venus – Element, Water – Carry for luck, health (especially teeth/throat), to keep away evil and break hexes, Burn to make dreams come true. Dried berries can be used for prosperity magicks. More info and links here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_parvifolium
The shop is closed on Tuesday/Wednesday, for our weekend! Spring hours are 11am-7pm Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! In case of bad weather, check here at the blog for updates, on our Facebook as Ancient Light or call the shop at 541-563-7154.

Tinne Holly Jul 8 – Aug 4 – Tinne – (CHIN-yuh), holly – The holly (Ilex aquifolium L.) is a shrub growing to 10 m (35 feet) in open woodlands and along clearings in forests. Hollies are evergreen, and stand out in winter among the bare branches of the deciduous forest trees that surround them. Hollies form red berries before Samhain which last until the birds finish eating them, often after Imbolc. The typical “holly leaf” is found on smaller plants, but toward the tops of taller plants the leaves have fewer spiny teeth. Hollies are members of the Holly family (Aquifoliaceae). The common holly is often cultivated in North America, as are hybrids between it and Asiatic holly species. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly

I am a fairy maiden,
But no one here knows it.
I left my home in Faerie
To be with a handsome youth
Who promised to stay with me forever,
But abandoned me in this cottage.
I am one of the Sidhe, tall as a human;
But I did not give up my powers,
And I have woven a net.
Pieter comes by to see me at times
When his latest woman’s love
The last time, when he slept
I wove an invisible web around him
And when he left, I held a string of it,
Winding it around a peg on my wall.
He may go as far as he wishes,
But never so far that my web
Cannot call him back or affect him.
Some days when I am angry,
I yank upon the web string
And he falls down hard
Upon the ground.
Other days, when I make music
I mix the web string
Into the notes of my singing,
And he must dance
No matter where he is…
Dance, faithless Pieter! Dance!
One day when my anger
Has cooled and my heart mended,
I will find another lover,
Either human or fae
And when I do,
I will move from here.
And when I leave,
I will also leave the web string
That binds my faithless Pieter,
For someone else to find
On the wooden peg

Create and bury a Witch’s Bottle – Activities taken from “Green Witchcraft” by Anne Moura (Aoumiel)
This is a glass jar with sharp pointy things inside to keep away harm. You can use needles, pins, thorns, thistles, nails, and bits of broken glass; it’s a good way to dispose of broken crockery, old sewing equipment, and the pins that come in new clothes. Bury it near the entry to the house (like next to the driveway or the front door), or inside a large planter.
Sprout wheat germ in a terra cotta saucer – Activities taken from “Green Witchcraft” by Anne Moura (Aoumiel) (these can be found in nurseries for use under terra cotta flower pots).
The sprouts can be added to homemade bread or used as an offering. Children enjoy planting the seeds and watching them grow, too.
God the grain,
Lord of rebirth.
Return in spring,
Renew the Earth.
[Anja’s note: These belong to god mourning rituals from the Near East and Middle East. This was also done in Greece and Egypt]
