It’s 54F and foggy as all get out. Why am I awake so early? <sigh>
The sun broke through the fog around 8am, yesterday. as it streamed through the window it was already hitting the middle bookcase on the west wall. Summer is sliding to a close. These folks know about it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/03/barrow-alaska-sunset_n_3700411.html
Elan had stayed overnight with us after the Sabbat, so was talking to Tempus when I came out to get more coffee. She stayed at the shop with us for a bit and then headed back to Eugene.
We got to the shop a bit early, after I harvested quite a lot of herbs and Tempus got everything put back into order after the Sabbat shifting of everything. We had people coming in long before he was done.
We had a couple stop by and ask to set up her gift bag display out front. They had to pull everything down by 2pm because their “lid” was coming apart! They had one of the inexpensive ones that have the lightweight frames. Not good for the wind out here…. but she has really awesome bags and backpacks and such. We had a nice long chat about putting “merchant gear” together, like how to build your own tables, and where to find a better frame…. She also does tie-dye, so we talked about getting some for the shop, and maybe some tie-dye caftans and/or skirts….large-size….
I got most of the herbs done, the fresh ones, anyway. I bundled some chamomile and hung it, got the hebe into a drying tray, prepped the rosebuds and got them into a drying tray with the sifted petals… Why sifted? Because the full blown ones shed seeds along with the petals! I also had harvested 4 more plums after the two on Thursday, so a couple of those got eaten and I have some for today.
The shop got busy enough and I got called to the phone, so the rock tumblers didn’t get opened. They’re sitting still at the moment because I don’t want them to go *too* far!
I didn’t have anyone in for the candle dipping or Sewing, but wow did we have customers! We were pretty busy all afternoon and I did three readings. We got a break right around the time that Sewing usually happens, so I worked on needlebook #10, which is the new snail design. Tempus even thinks it’s pretty cool. I’ll be trying to get some pix today of that and the new fans.
We got another glom of people 5-ish, as they were leaving Pathways to Transformation, and then closed up around 8pm. We went across the street to the China Restaurant. I had MouShou Chicken again and Tempus had his favorite Mongolian Beef. …and then we came home. Both of us were pretty darned tired, so he went to bed and I finished this up, checked a little mail and turned in, myself.
Today is Wicca 101 for the young folks from Job Corps…if any show up. All of our regulars have been force-graduated and many of the others have left the Center. The sequester cuts took their budget right down to the bare bones and cancelled pretty much all the programs except for automotive. So we don’t know how many will show up, if any.
If you’re interested in the Lavendar Sachets workshop, that’s a 2pm today. There’s no charge for the workshop, but if you want one to take home, they’re $1 each to cover materials.
Space Weather News for August 2, 2013 – http://spaceweather.com
PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is entering a broad stream of debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Although the shower won’t peak until August 12-13, when Earth hits the densest part of the stream, the first Perseids are already arriving. Check http://spaceweather.com for images and updates.
QUIET SUN: Many readers are asking about a recent media report, which stated that a Carrington-class solar storm narrowly missed Earth two weeks ago. That report is inaccurate. Solar activity was low throughout July and remains low as August begins. Details at http://spaceweather.com.

Today’s Feast is in honor of St. Oswald, an Anglo-Saxon king of the 7th century. He ruled two kingdoms that were joined into Northumbria, and started the switch-over to xtianity in that area. For that he was revered as a saint during the Middle Ages. When he was killed in battle, he was dismembered in the tradition of sacred kingship. Tinne Holly Jul 8 – Aug 4 – Tinne – (CHIN-yuh), holly – The holly (Ilex aquifolium L.) is a shrub growing to 10 m (35 feet) in open woodlands and along clearings in forests. Hollies are evergreen, and stand out in winter among the bare branches of the deciduous forest trees that surround them. Hollies form red berries before Samhain which last until the birds finish eating them, often after Imbolc. The typical “holly leaf” is found on smaller plants, but toward the tops of taller plants the leaves have fewer spiny teeth. Hollies are members of the Holly family (Aquifoliaceae). The common holly is often cultivated in North America, as are hybrids between it and Asiatic holly species. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly

Affirmation/Thought for the Day – Cry during a sad movie.
~ It is always with excitement that I wake up in the morning wondering what my intuition will toss up to me, like gifts from the sea. I work with it and rely on it. It’s my partner. – Jonas Salk (1914-1995) US microbiologist
~ The greatest remedy for anger is delay. – Seneca
~ A friend should bear his friend’s infirmities. – William Shakespeare
~ I am not afraid…I was born to do this. – Joan of Arc
I dreamed a woman ran for president
a woman of experience,
a woman of intelligence,
a woman of conviction and
a woman of wit.
I dreamed my country would see her
as a leader, a healer, a listener and
a model to take our nation out of the
trash-heap of unprovoked wars, violation
of treaties and sanctioned torture.
I dreamed of universal health care for
all my brothers and sisters, for all
our children. I dreamed of peace
and peaceful relations with all nations.
I dreamed of an end to hunger here
and abroad. I dreamed of respect
for all peoples and for life and liberty.
I dreamed our soldiers could come home.
I dreamed of all the things a woman would do,
when in charge of a great nation, with
our vast resources.
But the dream, was only a dream.
Pundits and naysayers couldn’t be
drowned out by any amount of
good common sense.
It was a woman running for president.
And somehow that was a threat.
Fear, anxiety, misogyny, backlash.
Even my sisters didn’t show up for her.
Against a glib Johnny-come-lately,
she paled at the polls.
What was everyone afraid of?
That dreams can come true?
That the world can be a better place?
That a woman might run things
differently? The Johnny-come-lately
said it’s all about change. A woman
as president–that would be a change.
I dreamed a woman ran for president
a woman of experience,
a woman of intelligence,
a woman of conviction and
a woman of wit.
If this woman couldn’t win, what
woman could? – Written by Jessica Sommar–June 4, 2008 firstname.lastname@example.org
Magick – Summer Magicks
Come in, come up the ladder,
spirits of rain, spirits of rain.
Come in, come and sit down,
spirits of cloud, spirits of cloud.
Listen: long ago, we were poor,
but we came out of that poor place.
We passed through that poor place
with your help, with your help.
Now come, help us again,
spirits of rain, spirits of cloud.
Come bring your showers,
come bring the heavy rain.
Come in, come up the ladder
spirits of cloud, spirits of rain. ~Invocation From The Sia People
Even in the midst of what appears to be plenty, we still have needs. Winter’s chill is gone, the harvest is burgeoning in the fields, the time of hunger seems past. Yet too much wind, too little rain, too little sun, too much rain – any of these can endanger the growth that seems so strong. A happy harvest is never inevitable.
Similarly, even when we seem to have much, we may still want more. It is possible, as a result, to become ungrateful for what we have, to spit in Fortune’s face. But, even if we look thankfully at all the good things life brings us, we will still find needs and wants unmet. This is life. Even those you are at the top of life’s mountain will still have unmet needs., thwarted desires. Acknowledge them, seek to satisfy them, but never forget to be thankful for what you have.
