It’s only 56F at the moment, because it’s been clear all night. The are droplets of dew throwing sparkles in all of the colors of the rainbow in the brilliant sunshine. There’s no fog, now, although there was some earlier.
Yesterday Tempus kept standing in the study clearing his throat. I had lost track of time and it was already 11am! Eek! So I hurried out and headed for the shop and got sortof open, since he was “going to be right there”. He wanted to work on the car a little during the day…. Cat was in and we chatted about friends and medical stuff and then the Duckmeister came in and we talked for a bit about OCPPG and parking at the studio during the event. By then it was well past 12:30 and Tempus showed up right about then.
He pointed out a bag of books that Karen had left. She’s going to be vending at the shop and demonstrating her wreath-making all day today. I never got the books checked in, and I’m going to have to get right on that in the morning.
I got a nap, then talked with another person with a box of books. We’re getting very well-stocked…. Finally, I got around to checking in the Paradise Music CD’s, etc. They’ve really lowered their prices! We have more of those DVD cards ($10), CD cards ($6) and a lot more CD’s ($13) including the new Govannen and one called “Wolflore”.
One of the later ones was Alice and her friends Paul and Devin who are out for a visit. She took us all across the street for dinner and we had a really yummy one with great conversation.
When we got home I looked at the stars. It’s been awhile since we’ve had such a clear sky! The Dipper was very clear and Scorpio with red Antares in his tail, the Teapot of Sagittarius steamed out the Milky Way and the Dolphin with 6 stars instead of 5! The nova is still visible. The Summer Triangle is sliding over, now and Pegasus almost 1/2-way up the sky. Venus was big and bright, too. I went in, very happily, did a little computer work and crawled into bed.
I’m still feeling sleepy, but it’s just lack of coffee. I’m trying to get my eyes open so I can get down to the shop, check in books and get the back cleaned up for workshops. I also need to print up some class signs and headers. Here’s today’s schedule.

The Sagittarius Teapot and the surrounding rich Milky Way are highest in the south right after dark at this time of year. The brightest puff of the summer Milky Way seems to rise like steam from the Teapot’s spout. All of the labeled objects here and many more are good binocular targets under a dark sky. – Akira Fujii
Today is the birthday of Raymond Buckland, one of the first witches in the US who came out of the “broom closet”. He’s been influential in writing books about the Craft and in a video, done for public access TV in the 90’s that portrayed several rituals and brought the basics of Wicca to people who didn’t even know that it existed. His earlier works are a little dated, and are from the ceremonial end of Wicca, but were invaluable in earlier decades with followable (if wordy) ritual scripts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Buckland
Today’s Plant is Sword fern, Polystichum munitum. It grows all winter on the coast, getting greener and lovelier every year as the new fiddles come up out of the center of the plant and develop into fronds. I’ve been enjoying those, watching them for months, now. they can get to be 6 feet tall and some of the ones down in the park where the stream crosses through are that size! The indigenes used the rhizome as a poverty food (baked and peeled), and the fronds are one of the best remedies for relieving the pain from the sting of a Stinging Nettle. It is also commonly used by florists as an ornamental plant. – Masculine, Air, The God, the Puck. This is an herb of masculine power, protection and luck. Use in spells to guide to treasure. Burn to drive away pests.…and as any fern, burn for rain…. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_fern
The shop opens at 11am! Spring hours are 11am-7pm Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! GREAT RITE by Vivienne West (For J.M., commemorating Full Moon 30/1/91)
Still is the night, and the clock silent.
Water from somewhere drips,
A breeze moves amongst your hairs.
The Bird, her beak poised, watches
As I caress you, child,
With an absent movement of my hands,
My mind elsewhere.
She of the Silver Wheel
Wheeling in darkness her silver overhead
Watches more than passively
As in Her name I take you and bless you;
And the Dark Hunter,
Jewels in His belt,
Takes you for His own,
Takes me in your flesh
His magical scabbard at His side,
Sword outraised, unutterably distant
Yet manifest here in you…
And I, primal woman and primal queen,
Feel Her powerful darkness stirring
And shouldering me aside within my own flesh
As I call Her forth, She of the sky-castle
Spinning dizzily overhead seen unseen;
And I stand by and watch as the Hunter fills your body
(you, no doubt, standing by and watching)
As the Dark Lady fills my body and clothed in our flesh
(…but I did not tell you, nor did you ask
that this is the time of my greatest fertility…)
Magick – Mabon Crafts
Mabon Prosperity Candles By Patti Wigington, About.com
The Bounty of the Season
Mabon is a time to be thankful for all the things we have — a garden full of crops to pick, full apple trees in the orchards, and the bread we’ve been baking with the grain already harvested. Although this is a time of balance, it’s also a time to look at what you have and be grateful for it. Celebrate the abundance of the harvest season by inviting prosperity into your life. These simple candles can be given as gifts, burned on your altar, or placed around the house to bring abundance your way.
You’ll need the following items on your workspace before you begin:
An unscented candle in a harvest color — yellow, orange, brown
Your choice of Money Oil or essential oil of cinnamon, orange, or ginger
Something to inscribe the candle with — a pencil, stylus, etc.
A pinch of dried basil, sage or dill
If you normally cast a circle or invoke Deity before a working, do so now. Using the stylus or pencil, inscribe your intent upon the candle. For example, if you need money to pay the bills, carve that on there. If you just want extra fun money, write that on the candle too. If you’re not sure how much you need, you can use symbols of money such as the $ dollar sign or a runic symbol. In traditional runes, Fehu is the sign of prosperity (see image).
A Little Candle Magic
Mabon is the perfect time to draw abundance into your life with a bit of simple candle magic. – Image (c) Patti Wigington 2007
Once you’ve completed your inscription, anoint the candle with the Money Oil. If you don’t have Money Oil, use another essential oil that brings prosperity — cinnamon, orange or ginger are all good to use. Focus your intent into the candle, drawing abundance to you. Rub a small amount of the dried basil, sage or dill — all herbs connected with money — into the oil. As you do, clearly visualize how you will be using the money that comes your way. Will you use it to pay off debt? Buy a new car? Take a class for personal growth?
Light the candle, and meditate on the flame. Continue focusing on your intent, and imagine it building, first as a small spark, and then growing into a large ball of light. Maintain this image as long as you can, and then release it into the candle flame. Make sure the candle is in a safe place so as not to be a fire hazard (a bowl of sand is perfect for this) and allow the candle to burn out on its own.
