Daily Stuff 12-21-13 Yule

Hi, folks!

Yule motif 1207 34 Welcome YuleBlessed Yule! Today is 2 seconds shorter than yesterday, but tomorrow will be 3 seconds longer. The Wheel is Turning into the Light!

It’s 49F! Since we’re finally back to rainy weather, the clouds are holding some heat in. It’s overcast and just tangling in the treetops here. It’s not raining, but everything is damp and there’s a teeny-tiny water droplet glowing silver at the tip end of a long clematis vine.

Yule motif 1207 05 logYesterday I got the newsletter out and then stayed constantly busy, right through the Sabbat. I had boxes to finish, one of which went out yesterday, one of which is getting dropped off in the morning. I had to get a bank deposit together, and then get the ritual finished up and printed and make some decisions on “costuming”.

Yule motif 1207 13 holly elfWe had a lot of customers in, several who had things on hold, but folks are excited about the holidays!

The Open Circle went pretty well, with the usual bobbles including me getting tongue-tied in the middle. <sigh>

plant flower Trillium_ovatum_1290

Today’s plant is the trillium, specifically the varieties for our state, of the Giant Purple Wakerobin, the Idaho Trillium and Round Leaf Trillium. These are one of the characteristic flowers of the Oregon spring forests,  the flowers of spring called Wakerobin since in many places robins and trilliums appear at the same time. It is also called Birthroot and has been used medicinally to control bleeding. Tripartite petals and flower make this an unusual plant and since they grow widely separated in the undergrowth of forests, they’re striking when you come across them. – Feminine, Venus, Water – Carry the root to attract money and luck or – Masculine, Venus & Saturn, Earth – the magicks of trillium are concerned with boundaries and lust. ….and they’re beautiful! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trillium Yes, it’s odd to have two sets of correspondences for one plant, but that’s the way this one works!

HollyKing~Colbert4~cYule/Winter Solstice is the Wicca celebration of the birth of the Sun, the return of the God to the physical world. Today the Holly King lays down his crown for the Oak King. We work with a lot of myths and folklore from around the world, too, but the return of hope, the spark of new life is what we’re working with here. Today is also the beginning of the new year and the end of the first year of the new Cycle in the Mayan Long Count among other things. There is always hope that things will get better, that the world will not end and that the Sun will always rise in the morning, bringing us Light and Joy and Love. Blessed Yule!

weather sun faceSaturday, Dec. 21 12:11 p.m. EST – Winter Solstice – The sun halts its southward migration and pauses briefly before moving north again. This is the shortest day of the year, followed by the longest night. As happened last year (and every year) the sun will be close to the direction of the center of the Milky Way, and once again the world will not end.
Today is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere. Winter in the north begins at the solstice: at 12:11 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Happy Yule.
Astro Constellation OrionIf there’s one constellation that everyone should know at this time of year, it’s wintry Orion climbing up in the east-southeast. As always when Orion is on the rise, the three-star Belt of Orion in its middle is nearly vertical. Show someone Orion this week and they’ll know it for a lifetime.

elderberry flower RuisRuis/Elder, Nov 25 – Dec 22 – Ruis – (RWEESH) Celtic tree month of Ruis (Elder) commences (Nov 25 – Dec 22) – Like other Iron Age Europeans, the Celts were a polytheistic people prior to their conversion to (Celtic) Christianity. The Celts divided the year into 13 lunar cycles (months or moons). These were linked to specific sacred trees which gave each moon its name.
Elder or Elderberry (Sambucus) is a genus of fast-growing shrubs or small trees in the family Caprifoliaceae. They bear bunches of small white or cream coloured flowers in the Spring, that are followed by bunches of small red, bluish or black berries. The berries are a very valuable food resource for many birds.
Common North American species include American Elder, Sambucus canadensis, in the east, and Blueberry Elder, Sambucus glauca, in the west; both have blue-black berries.
The common European species is the Common or Black Elder, Sambucus nigra, with black berries.
plant red elderberry RuisThe common elder (Sambucus nigra L.) is a shrub growing to 10 m (33 feet) in damp clearings, along the edge of woods, and especially near habitations. Elders are grown for their blackish berries, which are used for preserves and wine. The leaf scars have the shape of a crescent moon. Elder branches have a broad spongy pith in their centers, much like the marrow of long bones, and an elder branch stripped of its bark is very bone-like. The red elder (S. racemosa L.) is a similar plant at higher elevations; it grows to 5 m (15 feet). Red elder extends its native range to northern North America, and it is cultivated along with other native species, but common elders are seldom seen in cultivation. Elders are in the Honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae).

Yule Spells

Yule PentacleYule Travel Spell

To ensure that your luggage is not lost or stolen during the busy holiday travel season, make a small cloth pouch of orange fabric and write your full birth name on it. Stuff it with empowered herbs such as comfrey (to protect from theft), mugwort (to protect from loss or attack), and cumin (to give you peace of mind). Tie the talisman with blue string while visualizing the luggage being bound to you. Tie some of that same blue string on your left wrist until you safely reach your destination with all your luggage intact. – By: Edain McCoy

Yule PentaclePre-Solstice Ritual Bath – During the Winter Solstice, we often place emphasis on celebrating and sharing this joyous, but often difficult, holiday. For Witches, however, now may also serve as a time to attune to a quiet, internal spirituality. To begin to do so (with the solstice less than ten days away now), prepare a ritual bath with oils of rosemary, pine, and orange. Add a touch of patchouli for grounding. Light gold and green candles, and immerse yourself in watery solitude to refresh your weary holiday spirit. Meditate on the winter goddess and her lesson of stillness. Find the cool and clean space she offers, free of clutter and activity. It is the season for centering and grounding ourselves, and for defining who we really are. After the bath, take your journal and write down your goals by candlelight. Contemplate the coming rebirth, and identify which direction you wish to channel your energy and focus your intentions. – By: Karri Allrich

Yule PentacleMistletoe Magic – Mistletoe has long been used for protection and for love magic. Burning mistletoe banishes evil. Take a bottle of rubbing alcohol and drop fresh mistletoe sprigs in it. Let this set for a few hours. The longer it rests, the more potent will be the potion. When ready, pour the alcohol in your cauldron and light it. If you do not have time to allow the potion to rest, instead burn some sprigs of mistletoe. As you burn the potion or sprigs, say: “Evil may not reside or visit this happy and healthy home—not in any form, nor at any time. This home is protected by the Mother Goddess and Father God. Blessed are those who reside here. So it is from this day forward.” You may also empower a mistletoe wreath for additional protection. – By: Tammy Sullivan

Yule PentacleHoliday Peace Meditation – November 30th, 2007 – Color of the day: White Incense of the day: Carnation

The holidays can be horrible. There are so many stresses involved: you’re trying to create some idealized experience, trying to deal with family members who have their own ideals, and trying to stretch your finances. There are ways to help banish at least some of the stress and keep a level head to enjoy this special time with family and friends. Find a jar candle with a scent you enjoy—something that speaks of warmth, hearth, and good holiday things. Bless the candle with bringing peace, warmth, and enjoyment to your home. Allow it to burn each day throughout the holiday season. – By: Laurel Reufner
