It is only 36F outside under a white sky with very little wind. “Overcast at 1200 feet” says the computer. It’s already almost 11am. I don’t think we’re going to make it to the forecast high of 42. It was odd to walk into my study and have it be really chilly. Normally, there’s a distinct temperature contrast to the colder bedroom.
Yesterday Tempus and I were both tired enough that we overslept, finally getting to the shop at around 11:20. Oops…. We didn’t have anyone in during the day, although that’s the weather. It was sunny when we got up, but by the time the Tempus was clearing the car of his newspaper supplies it was pouring. My little candle had flickered on just before I heard the door bang, but by the time I got into the car it was clearing again. As we came down the seawall, the water was sparkling and the dark clouds were moving over the Coast Range.
I was at the shop for a little over an hour, but had to head back since we had bread in the bread-maker, seedbread this time. It was cold enough in the house that it hadn’t risen all that well, and even after I got the loaves formed, it took over an hour for them to get to the “riz’ enough” stage, and was in the oven on 125! As I left the house, it had gotten really dark again, and it started to pour right after I got the shop. The “Rain Women”, as Ursula LeGuin calls them, were marching up over Alsea Heights while I was coming down the seawall and I could see them heading up the Bay. I was heading over to the feast site, when I realized that there was no way I was going to be able to carry the boxes, so I went to the shop and had Tempus take them over there.
Tempus had been digging through boxes, since the corner by the compounding station had filled up with “stuff”, most of it having been pulled out and just dropped there, and all of it stuff that I couldn’t lift or reach. I had gotten the rest. He found his missing notebook and it solved the mystery. I had pulled out the bitterbrush for him to work on and dropped his notebook in (amazing how clear hindsight is….) so he’d find it! Somehow it got a lid and then stuff set on top of it. Well, he has it, now.
He got the rest of the headers done, so I spent a little while re-vamping the embroidery section. After that I went out and harvested primrose and jonquils, knowing that the coming cold might do ’em in….or at least do in the blooms.
When Tempus got back I went over there to check out placement of stuff for the event. She was still shooing ducks into their house when I got there. They were foraging for bugs. 🙂 We ended up sitting and talking, watching the evening roll in over the Bay. It was so restful that I forgot about class, so had to hurry back and I was late! We ran class until 9:30, though. Most of the way through lesson 5…
I was up again around 2, and then Tempus got up to do his paper route, although the papers were late for some reason.
I have a doctor appointment this afternoon and then I’m going to be baking. I’m hoping to have Tempus take a box of cookie dough to each of the folks who offered to help with these, then do some more bread dough and Shrewsbury cakes and then darioles… I’m thinking that I want one of those for supper!
Today’s plant is the Snowberry, Symphoricarpos albus. My kids used to call this “popcorn plant”, which is a name I’ve heard from others, too. The white berries are used as a food, a soap and for hand lotion. It doesn’t have any magickal uses that I know of, although the folk magicks of a similar bush amongst the Slavs say that it is “proper” as an offering to statues of the gods. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphoricarpos_albus
Limbo Festival, Trinidad and Tobago – “Few of the Americans who take part in a favorite party tradition realize that it originally served as a sacred funeral ritual from the West Indies – it is called the Limbo. In Trinidad, the Limbo was a part of a funeral dance. Mourners at the funeral would walk towards a horizontal bamboo pole and would attempt to walk forward, while bending backwards at the waist in order to move under the pole without knocking it off of its supports. The act was meant to symbolize the passage that the soul of the departed would take between life and the afterlife.” (quoted from Pip Wilson’s Almanac) More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbo_%28dance%29

Luis/Rowan – Jan 21-Feb 17 – Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to serviceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

January 8, 2014 – Cosmic Support – The Universe’s Plan for You by Madisyn Taylor
Nothing happens in our lives and in the world without purpose.
The path that speeds us toward our dreams can be a challenging and complex one, so it’s easy to get bogged down in confusion and insecurities. We often hesitate at the start of that path, questioning our purpose or our capabilities. Yet we should be moving forward joyously, eager to discover what destiny has in store for us. The universe has plans for us that eclipse anything we have dreamed of thus far. Though we must work diligently to fulfill our potential and to accomplish our individual missions, the universe is aware of both the quests we chose before birth and the goals we have formulated in adulthood. If we accept that it us watching over us and believe that it will facilitate our eventual success, the universe will provide us with the assistance and opportunities that enable us to make significant progress on our journeys of ambition.
Nothing happens without a purpose. Whether we attract success or repel it depends on our willingness to stay open to a wide range of possibilities and to embrace concepts like synchronicity. The universe is always ready to care for our needs, but we must not write off its loving attention as mere circumstance or chance. Likewise, we must endeavor to ensure that our egos do not become a barrier that prevents us from recognizing that even perceived mistakes and strife can be profound lessons that smooth the progress of personal evolution. When we understand that we only need to enthusiastically try our best to realize our objectives, the universe will take care of the details, propelling us forward in its unstoppable current. We may not always immediately understand the significance of certain experiences, but our trust will help us choose wisely at each crossroads.
The universe wants to see you accomplish your goals. No matter how long you’ve dallied or hesitated, it will always be there to put its plan for you in motion at the first sign of your faith. You can make the most of this aid by acquiescing to it rather than fighting it, nurture your dreams but do not attempt to micromanage every detail along the way. The universe will provide you with guidance and, if you heed that guidance, you will find your formerly stressful quest for success will become a journey of great joy.
