plant motif flower daisyYesterday was a *long* day! I was teaching from 11am, to 9pm, with an hour break for lunch (I took a nap) and an 1/2 hour between the 102 Intensive and the 101 class, when I met with Jan and picked up some fun new jewelry for the shop. More pendants! I didn’t get any pictures, but we have some new wooden rings and evil eye bracelets, too.

motif plant flower abroniaTempus had people in and out all day, but I don’t know how sales went. I was concentrating….

Today is chore day. We’ve got a lot to get done and I’m going to have to work in the garden, too. Geurin is supposed to come up during the afternoon and we need to do some bread.  It looks like one of those do-a-lot-of-little days!

220px-Rubus_ursinus_10689220px-Himalayan_Blackberry_&_SpiderToday’s plant is the Pacific Blackberry, <<<< Rubus ursinus. There are several species of blackberries that grow in the PNW, the nasty invasive one being the Himalayan blackberry, Rubus armeniacus. ^ ^ ^ ^ Here are pictures so that you can compare the blossoms, ursinus on the left and armeniacus on the right. Ursinus (from the Latin for “bear”) also has narrower leaves and reddish canes. It is the ancestor of Marionberries, Boysenberries & parent of Loganberries, too. Feminine, Venus, Water, Brigit, Healing, Money, Protection – Carry leaves for money, use blackberry leaves in spring water as healing for burns, in incense for Lughnasadh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_blackberry

feast 0513 ChildrensofFatima 0513 feast Freudenberg_Fátima1_01Today is the festival of Our Lady of Fatima, a series of Marian apparitions, in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. Three elementary-age kids saw the Virgin Mary
repeatedly during this year and the last apparition included the “Dancing Suns of Fatima”.
Two of the children died young, but the last, Lucia Santos, lived until 2005, having had more visions during her lifetime as a nun. The Catholic Church decided that the visions were real and has authorized various pilgrimages and devotions. There were three “secrets” as part of the visions which are held to have happened, although the 3rd may be an ongoing working out of prophecy. The worship of the Virgin Mary is the closest parallel in Christian belief to the Goddess paths Wicca work with, and Mary is often called upon as another face of our Goddess.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_F%C3%A1tima

Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 5/14 at 12:15pm. Waxing Gibbous Moon – From seven to fourteen days after the new moon. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. Curtis Clark

Newsletter Journal PromptJournal Prompt – Persuasive – Imagine that a new museum is being built in Washington ,D.C., to show the important work of people overlooked in history, especially minorities and women. A group of politicians opposes the $150 million being spent on the new museum, saying it sounds like a waste of money to remember these people long since dead. Write an argument that you would make in support of this project.

Milk for the Cat
When the tea is brought at five o’clock,
And all the neat curtains are drawn with care,
The little black cat with bright green eyes
Is suddenly purring there.

At first she pretends, having nothing to do,
She has come in merely to blink by the grate,
But, though tea may be late or the milk may be sour,
She is never late.

And presently her agate eyes
Take a soft large milky haze,
And her independent casual glance
Becomes a stiff, hard gaze.

Then she stamps her claws or lifts her ears,
Or twists her tail and begins to stir,
Till suddenly all her lithe body becomes
One breathing, trembling purr.

The children eat and wriggle and laugh;
The two old ladies stroke their silk:
But the cat is grown small and thin with desire,
Transformed to a creeping lust for milk.

The white saucer like some full moon descends
At last from the clouds of the table above;
She sighs and dreams and thrills and glows,
Transfigured with love.

She nestles over the shining rim,
Buries her chin in the creamy sea;
Her tail hangs loose; each drowsy paw
Is doubled under each bending knee.

A long, dim ecstasy holds her life;
Her world is an infinite shapeless white,
Till her tongue has curled the last holy drop,
Then she sinks back into the night,

Draws and dips her body to heap
Her sleepy nerves in the great arm-chair,
Lies defeated and buried deep
Three or four hours unconscious there. – Harold Monro

Pentacle of ElementsMagick – Recipes

I had several people ask me about the “washing balls” that I’ve been talking about. It sounds kinda wrong, dun’n’it? 🙂 All that means is soap balls. I found two recipes from a recipe book from the 1600’s. The Queen-like Closet or Rich Cabinet, by Hannah Wolley. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14377

Washing Balls

125. _A very fine washing-Ball._

Take three Ounces of Orrice, half an Ounce of Cypress-wood, 2 Ounces of Calamus Aromaticus, 1 ounce of Damask-Rose leaves, 2 Ounces of Lavender-flowers, a quarter of an Ounce of Cloves, beat all these and searce them fine, then take two pounds and an half of Castile Sope dissolved in Rose water, and beat all these forenamed things with the Sope in a Mortar, and when they are well incorporated, make it into Balls, and keep them in a Box with Cotton as long as you please.

177. _Take four Ounces of hard white Sope, beat it in a Mortar, with two small Limons sliced, and as much Roch Allom as a Hazle Nut, when they are beaten well together, make it up in little Balls, rub the stain therewith and then wash it in warm water, till you see it be quite out.
