No workshops or readings today!
It’s 55F and the eastern sky is filled with slate-colored clouds. There’s a colored streak near the horizon that looks promising, though. Tempus refilled the bird feeders yesterday and birds are all over it, already!
Yesterday flew by. We were working on trying to find a spot to have some of the Saturday morning classes for OCPPG along with cleaning in the workroom. I never did manage to really sit down to sew, but I got a bunch of stuff sorted. Late in the day I packed my stuff for the two events I’m going to and got Tempus to dig out something that I had been asked for.
Today Tempus will be at the shop all day. I’m going to be in Washington County, because a couple of sets of friends are having a major historical recreation event. Marius and I are leaving early and will be back late.
Today is the anniversary of a 1631 Sunday performance of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream that so upset the Puritans that Bottom had to sit in the stocks! More on the play here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midsummer_Night%27s_Dream
Today’s Plant is the Coast Willow, Salix hookeriana. I’ve been mistaking it for pussy willow ever since I moved out here and the pic used here I misidentified as that in yesterday’s newsletter! Pussy Willows are a subset of the willows which also include osiers (think “wicker” for their uses). They’re all Saliciae from which, salicylic acid, the medicine Aspirin, was derived. Willow magick is Feminine, Moon and Water. Willow wands can be used for healing, to sleep with for more vivid dreams, Drawing Down the Moon, or for protection in underworld journeying. The Willow will bring the blessings of the Moon upon those who plant it or have it on their property. Willows can be used to bind together witch’s brooms and a forked willow branch is widely used in water witching and dowsing. New Moon magick, creativity, fertility, female rights of passage, inspiration, emotion, binding. Love, Love divination, protection, healing. It is also known as the tree of immortality because of its ability to re grow from a fallen branch in moist ground. These properties apply to all forms of willow, but the Coast Willow has the properties of endurance, tolerance and stubbornness as well. There’s more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org

Runic half-month of Kenaz/Ken/Kebo – September 13-27 – Ken represents a flaming torch within the royal hall, so it’s the time of the creative fire – the forge where natural materials are transmuted by the force of the human will into a mystical third, an artifact that could not otherwise come into being. Winter is when the snow falls in buckets and leaves the world looking like a fantasy land. There is nothing that gets the butterflies going in my stomach more than walking through the woods at night with snow hanging so thick off the branches it looks like white moss. The branches hang low from the weight of it and form magical tunnels that sparkle and shimmer. About Tatsu Ta Hime: This windy Japanese Goddess blows into our lives today offering blessings and abundance for all our efforts. Tradition tells is that she weaves the fall leaves into a montage of color , then sweeps them away along with any late fall maladies. Sailors often wear an amulet bearing her name to weather difficult storms at sea safely.
To Do Today: Also known as the 7-5-3 festival in Japan, this is a huge birthday celebration for children who have reached these ages. Parents take their young ones to local shrines for the Goddess’s and God’s blessings. Here they receive a gift of rice for prosperity and a bit of pink hard candy for a long life. If you have children, by all means follow this custom to draw Tatsu Ta Hime’s protective energies into their lives. Place some rice, a piece of pink candy and a strand of the child’s hair in a little sealed box. Write the Goddess’s name somewhere on the box to keep her blessings intact. Put this in the child’s room or on the family altar.
To manifest this Goddess’s health and well being, take several swatches of fabric bearing her name and sew them into various items of clothing or carry one in your pocket. Should you day prove emotionally stormy, this little charm will keep you centered, calm and “on course”.
