50F and drippy. Almost 1/3 of an inch of rain since midnight, but it’s not coming down hard enough to hear on the skylight. The light is silvery and the green of the cedars intensified by the weather.
Yesterday just flew past. Tempus was exhausted, but we kept pecking at things, gradually getting things done. A lot of kits are most of the way to finished. Hatch and Travis and I got 100 mini-tins of wood butter done by starting during Herbs and keeping at it. I pulled out more pieces for my blackwork display, but I can’t find my kits! The class kits just seem to be completely awol. I worked on toy pouches and Tempus did a lot of varnishing. We’ve finished the small peg dolls, so he’s doing needle-cases. I never did get much done in the way of sewing and dyeing, though, which bugs me, but Tempus and I both ran out of oomph.
When closed up the sky was completely clouded over, but quite bright from the moon. I got a bath and then we had a nice supper of a mushroom sauce over potatoes with corn and pickled beets. Very tasty! …and turned in soon after. …and were up in the middle of the night because of Tempus paper route. He’s making coffee at the moment.
Today we’ll be at the shop a little earlier than we’ve been because the Duckmeister needs her car back before 10am. The afternoon is supposed to be the Project Day, and will mostly likely be on packing and games and going on with the things we’ve been doing all week.
Today’s plant is the Weeping Cherry, Grandma’s favorite in our front yard, which seems to be this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_subhirtella, the Higan Cherry. There are listings for cherries and weeping trees both, but the weeping cherries do not produce fruit, only lovely flowers. Cherries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry Cherry Blossom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_blossom Weeping Trees: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weeping_tree – Divination, Creativity; Healing. Objects made of Cherry wood are used to attract Love. Cherry juice is used as a substitute for blood in old recipes. Cherry gum is burned as a resin for sore throats.
The festival of Fufluns is a Roman event that happened somewhere near this day. There’s nothing much written about Fufluns, except that he’s a vegetation god, equivalent to Bacchus, that originally was Etruscan, but here are some references.http://www.pantheon.org/articles/f/fufluns.html and here:http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/roman-mythology.php?deity=FUFLUNS …and on the Etruscanshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etruscan_mythology

Sunday, January 4, 11:53 p.m. EST – Full Moon – The Full Moon of January is known as the “Wolf Moon” or “Old Moon.” It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise; this is the only night in the month when the Moon is in the sky all night long. The rest of the month, the Moon spends at least some time in the daytime sky.
Tonight the eclipsing variable star Algol should be at minimum light, magnitude 3.4 instead of its usual 2.1, for a couple hours centered on 12:07 a.m. EST. Algol takes several additional hours to fade and to rebrighten.
Mercury is creeping up to a close pairing with Venus; look for them in low the southwest in the afterglow of sunset. Mercury is magnitude –0.8; Venus shines 17 times brighter at magnitude –3.9. On January 2nd they’re still 2.5° apart. They’ll shine closest together, 0.7° apart, on the 10th. The farther south you live, the higher above the southwest horizon they’ll appear.

Celtic Tree Month of Beth/Birch, Dec 24 – Jan 20, Beith – (BEH), birch – The silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) is the most common tree birch in much of Europe. It grows up to 30 m (100 feet) high, but is more often found in spreading clumps on sandy soils. It is one of the first trees to colonize an area after a mature forest is cut; this is probably a large part of its symbolic connection with new beginnings. It is cultivated in North America, often under the name of weeping birch. The three trees in my front yard form root sprouts that would take over the bed where they are planted if I didn’t cut them back. The common birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) is almost as widespread as the silver birch, but grows primarily on acid or peaty soils. It can reach 20 m (65 feet) in height. Birches are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae). Curtis Clark

Affirmation/Thought for the Day – As the sun shines upon you and the day draws to and end remember to reflect on what the day has meant, and remember to smile upon another to make their day feel bright, remember to laugh with a person so they know it’s meant from the heart.
~ The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time. – Abraham Lincoln
~ Don’t try to shape what you see, let the world show you its shape. – Kerr Cuhulain
~ If our atmosphere is so extraordinarily different, so reactive, and yet it stays constant for millions of years, something must be regulating it. And since I knew that these gases all came from living organisms, it must be life that’s doing the regulating. – James Lovelock, The Gaia Hypothesis.
~ The instrument of torment was identity. As some philosopher said, identity politics is zoological. If we don’t see our partial struggles as part of a general project of human emancipation, we turn on each other and fight over crumbs. – Ken MacLeod
The grand secret of enjoying yourself with a free heart is to get rid of ambition, rid of even the most trifling competitions with other poor devils. But we must have our pride; and we must have a very deep pride. We must have a pride in simply being ourselves and beyond any conceivable competition. – John Cowper Powys
Birch Tree Meditation for Imbolc 2009
The wheel turns, and with it ebb and flow many things. Life and death, God and Goddess, Light and Darkness… During this time of the Wheel’s turning, the Goddess is in Her full power, and the God’s light grows stronger every day. The plants which been waiting silently in the Underworld, and itching to be reborn into the Light in the coming months… And the trees are beginning to pull their sap back up from the ground, refilling themselves with their own nurturing juices.
Close your eyes… Breathe deep, and let your body relax… Relax your mind, and as you breathe let your breath calm your muscles… your fears… your worries… As you inhale, let your breath soothe your soul… As you exhale, let your tension and stress flow with your breath, out of you, and into the Earth.
As you begin to relax, let yourself drift in the dark place, the nurturing womb of the Goddess. Here you are safe and loved, beyond all bounds. Here, you are cradled in the amniotic fluid of the Mother of Life…
In the darkness, you realize that you are enclosed within a shell; An egg-shaped barrier surrounds you… You feel moist air around you… And the shell sucks up the water and cracks, exposing you to the fresh air in the soil that now envelops you…
You know which way is up… And you feel the magickal pull of some force… A force that wants you to rise up… You try, but you know you’re not strong enough. You continue to breathe in the air, and drink the water, and feel the force pulling you, making yourself stronger. You grow up into the darkness, waiting to break free from the shadowed womb that has nurtured you.
Continuing to gather strength from the elements around you, you fill yourself with energy, aching to answer the call to rise up, to discover what lives and thrives above you… And you thrust yourself up to greet the light of the Sun…
Feel the power of the Sun pouring down on you, and recognize that it was the Sun’s power that was pulling you up from the depths… As day turns to night, and the days go by, you continue to grow. You rise up. Your roots go deeper, and your trunk becomes wider, and your branches stretch out and bud with the promise of fertile seed…
But the Wheel turns, and you begin to loose your leaves… Your juices flow down and into the Earth and your roots, while the cold frost of Winter approaches… You stand, cold and alone, having lost your fertile seeds, feeling the cold breeze rush through your leafless branches, and waiting for the Sun to regain his Throne so that Life can renew itself…
One day you feel the shift in the air, and you know that the Light is coming back… It is the time of year that it is now… The time when the Goddess is in Her full power… So are you, who is the Mighty Birch Tree. A symbol of the Goddess. You who know the Goddess as Maiden, for you were a sapling… You who know the Goddess as Mother, for you bore fertile seeds… You who know the Goddess as Crone, for you shed the ability of producing life and survived the cold harsh winter… And just like the Goddess Herself, you were reborn to begin the cycle once more.
Take some time to listen for messages from the spirit of the Birch, and from the Goddess… Take some time to feel what it has been like to grow and wither as a Birch Tree… Thank the Birch Spirit and the Goddess, and let yourself drift back into the darkness, where you can once again rejoin this world… As you breathe, let the visualization drift away, and let your breath remind you of your physical body.
Imbolc Meditation by Aradian Waterstarr
Breathe deep… Breathe from your belly, from your core, your center… Inhale and become… Exhale and release… Release all things that do not serve. Anger. Fear. Resentment. Shame. Sadness. Let them flow out of your breath, down to Mother Earth… Breathe in and know that we all breathe the same breath…. Breath out and know that you are safe, surrounded by friends and Gods who will let no harm come to you… Breathe and let the cradling darkness of the Mother envelop you… Rest in Her mysteries as you breathe in… And out…
Floating in the Mother’s womb, you know that you are meant to go forward, to receive a message, to seek the path that She has set you upon… The cat has long been a guide and friend to Witches, and tonight we call upon the power of Cat to guide us to the Lady of the Crossroads who sees all possible pathways…
You hear a sound, maybe a meow, or a roar… You can feel the silent steps of the Cat coming to guide you to the Lady. The darkness fades a little, and as you look around you can see the Cat who has been sent to you. This Cat is your guide… Some of you may be guided by your own house cat, or one who has passed away… Others will be guided by their Cat totems, ranging from Tigers, to Lions, to Panthers, to Leopards, to Lynx’s. Let Cat come to you in the way it is meant to… Spend some time with this Cat… Ask its name and why it has been sent to you…
It is time to go to the Lady… Cat turns, and begins walking away from you… Follow Cat… Follow and know that it is leading you to the Lady of the Crossroads… As you walk with Cat, feel around you for the Direction that you are walking in… If you do not feel which direction you are walking in, you may ask Cat which direction it is taking you in… By paying attention to North, East, South, and West you will get a better idea of what Path you are being set upon…
Looking down at your feet, you see that Cat has taken you upon a Pathway… Looking around you, pay attention to your surroundings… What do you see? Are there trees, animals, birds? Are you near the ocean, a river, or in a desert? What do you smell? Hear? Let these visions come to you…
Looking ahead of you, you see a lady, cloaked in fire… Her red hair shines like the sun, and her eyes are as green as the deep waters… As you get closer, you notice that she is standing at the center of a four-way Crossroad… This is the Lady Bridget. Goddess of Fire, Inspiration, Poetry, Blacksmiths, and the Crossroads. She holds the knowledge of Pathworking and possibilities… Cat brings you to Her, and lays at Her feet… You are struck by Her beauty and obvious strength.
Let Bridget offer to you her words of wisdom… Ask Her any questions you have about the Path are currently on… Let Bridget show you the possible outcomes of your actions, and the possible alternatives…
Ask Bridget any last quick questions that you have for Her, and give Her your thanks… Cat stands, and begins walking down one of the Pathways in the Crossroad… Follow… Is this the same Pathway that you followed to meet Bridget, or a different one? As Cat guides you back to your physical body, is the scenery the same, or somehow altered? Are there any new smells or sounds?
You arrive at a shimmering black-misty Veil… Ask the Cat if it has any last words for you, and thank Cat for it’s guidance… Step through the Veil, and be cradled once again in the Mother’s formlessness…
In this darkness, you are within your own being… Breathe deep and allow yourself to begin slipping back into your physical body… Breathe and become aware once again of your physical body and your physical surroundings… Breathe and let your mind and soul reenter your physical vessel…
Begin to wiggle your toes and fingers… Breathe deep, and begin to slowly move your arms and feet… Roll your head from side to side… Breathe deep, and when you are ready, open your eyes.
You have seen many things in this Quest that will be of great benefit to you. Anytime that you need guidance on your Path, you may call on Cat or Lady Bridget and seek their guidance… If you were led by a Cat totem, it would be a good idea to continue working with it… If you felt a deep connection with Bridget, you might wish to build an altar for Her, and continue working with Her.
In order for you to keep a blessing and reminder from this Pathwork, you will now be instructed in how to create one of Bridget’s sacred charms, a Bridget’s Cross. This charm will act as a ward of protection, a symbol of the presence of Bridget, and as a amulet for aiding you to keep in contact with the knowledge that was gained at the Crossroads.
