Hi, folks!

Imbolc motif CandlesOpen Circle for Imbolc tonight!

Waves tide Last Minus tide of the cycle at 7:11 PM of -0.1 feet.

Wind Weather MotifIt’s 52F and overcast with some interesting weather moving in over the next several days. They’re talking gusty wind and a fair amount of rain. Keep your eyes open! It’s really grey out there, even at 9am. With the days getting longer by over 2 1/2 minutes per we’re getting startled by how late it is in the evenings. Last night Tempus thought it was about 4:30 and it was going on 6pm!

Arr 01 plant motifYesterday was kind of disappointing. I had hoped to be cooking/baking all day. Didn’t happen. I had so much to catch up on with paperwork and mail that by around 2pm I kinda gave up and just put my head down and finished it all…well, except for what I was finishing this morning… 🙂

020315 Cheese 6At 6pm Tempus and I had to go to a merchant’s meeting. We’re going to put together a merchant’s association for Waldport, hoping to call it ShopWaldport. We need one, since our Chamber of Commerce isn’t one….it’s a City Club. So, that took a lot of the evening. We had to go through the signage changes that *we* want to see, instead of the weirdness that the planning commision was trying to put through.

020315 Ladies in Waiting 2Once we got home Hatch was making a sweet version of the scalded milk cheese and I got a taste of it. I think he makes a better one than I do. …and he got me some pictures of the cheese bag, too. After that he did a trial run on the Maids of Honour, which are a Renaissance area cheesecake, nothing like the sticky-sweet, too-rich modern versions.

coffeeWe ended up staying very late and getting up late. I haven’t even had coffee and I’m contemplating going back to bed. I can’t. We have an Open Circle tonight!

plant snowberry Symphoricarpos_albusToday’s plant is the Snowberry, Symphoricarpos albus. My kids used to call this “popcorn plant”, which is a name I’ve heard from others, too. The white berries are used as a food, a soap and for hand lotion. It doesn’t have any magickal uses that I know of, although the folk magicks of a similar bush amongst the Slavs say that it is “proper” as an offering to statues of the gods.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphoricarpos_albus

feast 0204 Limbo_DanceLimbo Festival, Trinidad and Tobago – “Few of the Americans who take part in a favorite party tradition realize that it originally served as a sacred funeral ritual from the West Indies – it is called the Limbo. In Trinidad, the Limbo was a part of a funeral dance. Mourners at the funeral would walk towards a horizontal bamboo pole and would attempt to walk forward, while bending backwards at the waist in order to move under the pole without knocking it off of its supports. The act was meant to symbolize the passage that the soul of the departed would take between life and the afterlife.” (quoted from Pip Wilson’s Almanac) More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbo_%28dance%29

Celtic Tree Month Rowan berries, LuisCeltic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

THE LIFTED VEIL

When the veil is lifted,
I will no longer be there.
When you lift the bridal veil,
There will be a simulacrum, a phantom.
It will never be me, never!

You will have to live without me.
I tried to be the woman you wanted
But then I wondered where I was,
And what kind of stranger
I had become to myself.

While you are marrying a mannequin
(Which is what you really wanted);
I will be putting on eagle wings
And soaring toward the sky,
Singing songs of freedom.

I’m sure my body’s indentation
Upon your bed will fill in,
And your ‘secret’ girlfriends
Will be glad to take up the slack…
And I leave them to it!

A phantom bride will meet you;
A ghost of the girl that once loved you.
She may take the bride’s place,
But I will leave, and she will soon
Disappear. © Copyright 2/25/06 Beth Johnson   (Mystic Amazon)

New Year’s Collage

For several years, I’ve been getting together with friends to make magical New Year’s Collages on Candlemas. After casting a circle and creating sacred space, we gather together over a table piled with pictures, glue, scissors, glitter, photographs and other items that will help us create a visual representation of what we want to bring into our lives during the new year. I always keep my newest collage above my desk where I can see it every day, but the walls of my room are covered with the old ones, all icons of my dreams.

The first year I made a collage which showed different things in the four directions for the four seasons. The lighthouse picture I put in the east has become the Watchtower of the East for me and I see it every time I call that direction. I also put a llama in the south in that collage and that was the summer I found a llama I could buy and a place to keep it (I chickened out and never called about the llama).

Sometimes I use symbols to represent qualities I want. One particularly creative year the central images in my collage were a nest and a flower. Another year, uncomfortable with being too blatant about what I wanted, I put a glimpse of a rumpled bed seen through a half-closed door in my collage, and that’s exactly what I got–a glimpse of sexuality.

My friend, Liza, made a collage that became a portal. When she slept with it over her bed, she felt presences come into her room. She eventually moved it to another location where it did not have quite the same impact. I give you these examples to let you know how profound these images can be.

Visualization has always been acknowledged as an important skill in practising magic but, with the publication of Shakti Gawain’s pivotal book, Creative Visualization, it became well known in the general culture so that now every book about success in any field counsels the value of clearly visualizing what you want.

Gwendolyn Endicott in The Spinning Wheel suggests making a collage in the shape of a mandala. She recommends putting something that represents you in the center of the picture. Then fill in the different quadrants with images appropriate to those seasons, directions or elements. Or place images of things you want to create at the four cardinal points and images of what you want to attract into your life in between.

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – A Noise…

My wife has not spoken to me in three days. I think it has something to do with what happened on Sunday night when she thought she heard a noise downstairs.

She nudged me and whispered, “Wake up, wake up!”

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“There are burglars in the kitchen. I think they’re eating the tuna casserole I made tonight.”

“That’ll teach them!” I replied.
