Hi, folks!

Rain Hat & UmbrellaIt’s cloudy and still, but fairly bright. It was only 41F when I woke up. It’s 54F, now and we’re likely to get some rain. There’s a higher chance as we get into tomorrow and Friday, but it actually feels like it.

modern whizzerToday the days start changing in length by 3 minutes per day. I’m sure you’ve felt it. It’s not that dark time of the year anymore and folks are getting restless. Daylight Savings time <ugh> is coming up on the 9th of March.

schnurrer<<<< Medieval German….^ ^ Modern Hum Button ^

Yesterday I spent the whole day doing research. I’m teaching a class on March 3rd and then in late April on Medieval toys and I’m trying to find pictures that are good enough that I can print large versions for the class.

spielneuI found a funny one. The toys that we call “whizzers” or “button whizzers” are called in German “hum buttons” or “hum hangovers” ! That’s what all today’s pictures are whizzer Yate 1600of. I’m also trying to figure out how to make some, particularly this last one. <<<<<

Today I need to get the newsletters together for the week. Tempus is doing chores and I have a new exercycle! I’m hoping that I can start riding and get a little better into shape.

Syzygium_jambos_Fruit_and_seeds_IMG_4906Today’s plant is the tropical tree, the Rose AppleSyzygium jambos – In ancient Sanskrit, the land now called India was referred to by the ancient Indians themselves as Jambudvipa, which means Rose-apple-land (jambud = rose apple; vipa = land). With its thick, leathery leaves and great span of branches, the Jambu Tree offers great shade and coolness against the sun. Stories tell that Lord Buddha sat in the shade of a Jambu Tree 90px-Syzygium_jambos(the story is often told as a “Bodhi tree”), watching men plowing the land with oxen and meditating on the burdens we all must carry in this life. He was determined that he would either reach enlightenment or die where he sat. He finally saw his previous births and realized that people are born and reborn into different states according to their deeds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syzygium_jambos Information on the Bodhi Tree, Ficus religiosa here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhi_tree

feast 0225 stone_circle_at_JunapaniThe stone circles of Junapani are near Nagpur in the Indian state of Maharashtra and are dated from 1000 BCE to 300 CE. Megalithic burial monuments exist near the circles and unlike most in Europe contain human remains, and in one case, a horse. Some of the stones have “cup marks” and clusters of lines which seem to have astronomical significance More here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_circles_of_Junapani

The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history. Although the detail of the formation of the American governments is at present little known or regarded either in Europe or in America, it may hereafter become an object of curiosity. It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven, more than those at work upon ships or houses, or laboring in merchandise or agriculture; it will forever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses. – John Adams, “A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America” 1787-1788
