Herbs Workshop from 11-Noon and then Anja is *only* doing readings from then until 1:30, because she and Marius are heading off to a meeting up in Tillamook.
Yesterday was another long day. The rain kept most of the shoppers home, although we had a few in, late in the day when the sun came out. I spent some time filing, then working on the aquamarines, then some herbs. I had sent Tempus home early on, to do some more chores, but he was back 4-ish with the mail, and then he ran an errand over to our landlord and back.
>>>>> Fennel seed being stemmed >>>>>
Late in the day I finished up the aquamarines, so Tempus has to finish hanging them up, now. He was working on some small regular cut pieces, sorting and hanging those.
We had supper across the street at the China Restaurant. We were hungry and very tired and it just made sense. We spent a little more time at the shop, Tempus finishing up with the one basket of crystals and then went home and crashed.
Tempus took off for his paper route at around 3 and I went out to look at the eclipse just past 3:30. It was odd to see a fat crescent and lop-sided at that! …and then I was out just before 4 and it was about 50% of a moon, and then an even weirder, bulgy thin crescent at 20 past. …and I was in and out from then until past 5. At that point, there was a brighter spot along the top, but they were right that it wasn’t a blood red eclipse, but an orangey pink! I took a moment to look around the sky. Scorpio was bright, high in the south, with the Sagittarius Teapot to the southeast and the Milky Way steaming up from the spout all across the sky. My lovely Dolphin was just below that out to the east and right above…. was that Mars? It was awfully red…. The clouds had all gone and it was *cold*, so totality was the last time I went out.
Today Herbs Workshop is at 11am. I’ll be up for doing readings from then until 1:30, but at the point Marius and I are heading for a meeting up in Tillamook and Tempus is going to be running the shop for the rest of the day by himself.
Today’s plant is Blue Elderberry, Sambucus cerulea. It’s a rather wild shrub that can be trained into a small tree, with icky-smelling white flowers that then produce dark fruits that appear blue because of a whitish coating on them. In Oregon it grows mostly from the valley out to the coast with some isolated pockets in the Eastern part of the state. There’s a lot of folklore surrounding the tree. “In some areas, the “elder tree” was supposed to ward off evil influence and give protection from witches, while other beliefs say that witches often congregate under the plant, especially when it is full of fruit. In some regions, superstition, religious belief, or tradition prohibits the cutting of certain trees for bonfires, most notably in witchcraft customs the elderberry tree; “Elder be ye Lady’s tree, burn it not or cursed ye’ll be” – A rhyme from the Wiccan rede [poem]. If an elder tree was cut down, a spirit known as the Elder Mother would be released and take her revenge. The tree could only safely be cut while chanting a rhyme to the Elder Mother.” From Wikipedia – Feminine, Venus, Water – The flowers are used for Crossing the Bridge rituals. Carry for protection and to prevent rheumatism and toothache. Dried berries are helpful in sleep pillows. All parts are good for protection. Grow near the home for prosperity. Magic wands and flutes are often made from this wood.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus_cerulea orhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus
Today’s Feast is the first mention of Moskva (Moscow, short for Grad Moskva, “big city on the Moscow River”) in history The first reference to Moscow dates from 1147 when Yuri Dolgorukiy called upon the prince of the Novgorod-Severski to “come to me, brother, to Moscow”. It’s the largest city in Russia, about the 6th largest in the world. It’s been burned to the ground several times (once by its own populace in the Napoleonic Wars). The kreml (Kremlin) was built as a wooden stockade about 7 years after the first mention and has grown to a huge complex of palaces and government buildings. Almost 20% of the population of Moskva, calls itself, “Spiritual, but not religious” and about 1% are Rodnoveri, the pagan faith “ancestral faith”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow

Are you keeping watch on Venus and the Pleiades>>>> ? They’re drawing closer together day by day in the western twilight. This evening the Pleiades are about 7° above Venus in the darkening blue. They’ll pass less than half that distance to Venus’s right on the 10th through 12th.
Venus (magnitude –4.0) blazes in the west during and after twilight — the “Evening Star.” Not until a good hour and a half after complete dark does it set in the west-northwest. Look for the Pleiades above it, closer every day. The little cluster passes to Venus’s right on the 10th and 11th.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

The Wisdom of the Witch by Florence Mattersdorfer
What no one wants to hear,
Hearing that which is
Alive within the eye of
The living earth is the hearth
That is home.
Lighting a spell of thanks and in doing so
Releasing all worry,
The gods know as does she
That all is as it should be.
And, touching the earth with loving hands
Then crossing the stream with bare, cold feet,
She walks her sacred circle to honor all
And marks her altar with book and stone.
All hopes are cast with wand of birch
Into nature’s realm, her spiritual church.
And though possessing no material wealth
Wealth abounds around her and the wisdom
Of this witch. – From “Griefdancer”, a poetic book on spiritual growth

A Sweet Woodruff Spell for Prosperity – Pagan Studies:
At dusk in my woodland garden, sweet woodruff sends out its fresh haylike scent, and its white flowers glow in the June twilight. In June, sweet woodruff reaches the height of its magical power, and is valuable in attracting prosperity. The prosperity spell which follows should be concluded next month, beneath July’s Blessing Moon. On a June evening, just before nightfall, gather some woodruff flowers, leaves, and stems. Cut them all, and put them in a darkened room to dry on a hook or beam. When July’s Moon is at its height, and the woodruff has dried, bury it with a dollar and a copper coin. Now, with what you’ve sown your wealth will increase. By: James Kambos
A Love Charm – http://www.chroniclesofavalon.com/beltane2003print.html
A Love Charm by Seraphina-m’Anat
Caveat – this is a charm that should not be used on a random “target,” but rather as an enhancement to an established relationship. The reason for this is that, in my experience with this charm ::nudge, nudge, wink, wink::, the essence of the two partners become intertwined, and the charm will happily ensnare you as it bewitches your mate. Spring normally gets us all happily randy, and this charm adds a little more passion and intensity to this feeling. Now, some may call this manipulative of another’s will, but let me offer the witch’s perspective….my hubby knew full well I was a witch when he married me and hasn’t complained so far of any effects of “boosting” so to speak, LOL. Effective enhancements to this charm are self-pampering, as well as spouse pampering; candle light dinners, foods traditionally know to be aphrodisiacs, and exotic music. Silks, velvets, and satins don’t hurt either ::impish grin:: A reliable baby-sitter for any wee’uns in the house is a plus too, if you have children. Is it any wonder that this is one of the witches favourite holidays?
By all that lives on land, in sea,
By the ebbing and the flow,
Each time that you do think of me,
Your love for me shall grow.
By numbers odd and numbers even,
By the sacred power of three times three,
Passion for me in your thoughts weave in,
All thy thoughts shall be of me.
By velvet cords of longing,
Your heart to me belonging,
By the white rose and the red,
I am the fire in thy head.
No peace nor increase shall you find,
Until your hand is joined in mine.
