Daily Stuff 7-15-15 Dioscuri

Hi, folks!

Waves tide Minus Tide at 7:05 AM of -1.3 feet.

I *way* overslept this morning; rolled over and went back to sleep when the alarm went off and here it’s past noon!

weather Sunny brightThe sunshine is pouring down on the world and it’s quite breezy. 72F, pollen down to 7, humidity 66%…. could you ask for a more perfect day?

Yesterday being a chore day a lot of that got done. Laundry and kitchen and sorting fabrics and putting away clothes…and books. I found another space to tuck stuff in by getting rid of another box of papers so another box of books is shelved. In the evening I was doing blog updates while the Metal Night was going on, except is didn’t happen. They went shopping instead. 🙂

motif bird sparrowToday we have more chores. There are a lot of plums that need to be cut and processed and I need to get the salal stripped *and* it’s time that the other berries need to be harvested again, already! Today is also set-up-the-newsletters day.

Esbat tonight!

220px-Antiochos_VII_with_DioscuriGeminiToday’s Feast is that of the Dioscuri, the twins, Castor and Pollux, venerated in Greece, Rome, by the Celts and across the empire. One was human and one immortal and not wanting to be parted, even in death, the immortal one begged the gods to let him and his brother stay together. Thus they became the constellation of Gemini. There’s a good Wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_and_Pollux

220px-WesternSkunkCabbageToday’s Plant is Skunk CabbageLysichitum americanum. This is one of the signs of spring here on the coast, where every drainage ditch or marshy field has it’s glow of brilliant yellow and bright, deep green. It is a famine food with a spicy or peppery taste, but contains calcium oxalate, which can upset the insides and even cause death if you get too much. Bears eat it after hibernation to get their intestines working again. It is used to cure sores and swellings, particularly after winter, when starvation conditions make these things immensely worse. However the typical use of the local peoples of this herb was to line baskets with the huge leaves to keep things from bruising or dropping through and to wrap around foods when baked under a fire, where it imparts a distinctive taste to the crust. Cunningham’s Encyclopedia references Eastern Skunk Cabbage, which is a different plant with a red flower, but the magicks are the same, Symplocarpus foetidus –Feminine, Saturn, Water – Carry when you have legal troubles, or keep in the drawer with the filed papers. Wrap in a bay leaf on a Sunday to draw good fortune. Astro Scorpio Constellation AntaresThe field around Antares is one of the most familiar binocular views in the sky. You may know where to find the diffuse globular cluster M4 within this field. But how about the nice symmetric triple star Rho Ophiuchi? And what about tiny, elusive M80? See Gary Seronik’s Binocular Highlights column and chart in the July Sky & Telescope, page 45.

Holly Celtic Tree Month Tinne Ilex-aquifoliumCeltic Tree Month of Tinne/Holly, Jul 8 – Aug 4, Tinne (CHIN-yuh), holly – The holly (Ilex aquifolium L.) is a shrub growing to 10 m (35 feet) in open woodlands and along clearings in forests. Hollies are evergreen, and stand out in winter among the bare branches of the deciduous forest trees that surround them. Hollies form red berries before Samhain which last until the birds finish eating them, often after Imbolc. The typical “holly leaf” is found on smaller plants, but toward the tops of taller plants the leaves have fewer spiny teeth. Hollies are members of the Holly family (Aquifoliaceae). The common holly is often cultivated in North America, as are hybrids between it and Asiatic holly species.
Graves (1966) and others are of the opinion that the original tinne was not the holly, but rather the holm oak, or holly oak (Quercus ilex L.). This is an evergreen oak of southern Europe that grows as a shrub, or as a tree to 25 m (80 feet). Like the holly, the holm oak has spiny-edged leaves on young growth. It does not have red berries, but it does have red leaf “galls” caused by the kermes scale insect; these are the source of natural scarlet dye. Holm oaks are occasionally cultivated in North America.

When this universal law of equity rises up in every man and woman, then none shall lay claim to any creature and say, This is mine, and that is yours. This is my work, that is yours. But everyone shall put their hands to till the earth and bring up cattle, and the blessing of the earth shall be common to all; when a man hath need of any corn or cattle, take from the next store-house he meets with. There shall be no buying and selling, no fairs or markets, but the whole earth shall be the common treasury for every man, for the earth is the Lord’s … When a man hath eat, and drink, and clothes, he hath enough. And all shall cheerfully put to their hands to make these things that are needful, one helping another. There shall be none lords over others, but everyone shall be a lord of himself, subject to the law of righteousness, reason and equity, which shall dwell and rule in him, which is the Lord. – Gerrard Winstanley; The New Law of Righteousness

The summer clouds are beautiful,
yes they are. Yes, they are.
The summer clouds are like flowers,
yes they are. Yes, they are.
The clouds blossom in the sky,
yes they do. Yes, they do.
The blossoming clouds are coming here,
yes they are. Yes, they are. ~ Zuni “Song of the Blue Corn Dance”

Summer is, indeed, a beautiful season. Yet it is also a busy one. Vacations, social engagements, outdoor concerts, and the usual press of work and laundry and errands and….

Summer whirls by. It is July already, when May seems to have been yesterday. How can we enjoy our lives when they are led at such a pace? What will you remember of this summer? If you are too tired to watch a firefly on a sultry night, too busy to notice that a favorite flower has bloomed, too much in transit to enjoy conversation with a friend – what will you have to hold, to treasure, in winters to come?

For we cannot savor what we rush through. Let some things slide this summer. Don’t worry about them.

You will never remember if you did the laundry and you will never forget the fragrance of new roses. -By Patricia Monaghan ~ From “The Goddess Companion

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – 10 Jokes Only Engineers Will Understand. Who Says Engineers Don’t Have A Sense Of Humor? – 10th May 2014

  1. Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.
    2. To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
    3. A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, “What’s with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!” The doctor chimed in, “I don’t know, but I’ve never seen such inept golf!”
The priest said, “Here comes the green-keeper. Let’s have a word with him.”
He said, “Hello George, what’s wrong with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow, aren’t they?”
The green-keeper replied, “Oh, yes. That’s a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime.”
The group fell silent for a moment.
The priest said, “That’s so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight.”
The doctor said, “Good idea. I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there’s anything he can do for them.”
The engineer said, “Why can’t they play at night?”
    4. What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers? Mechanical engineers build weapons. Civil engineers build targets.
    5. The graduate with a science degree asks, “Why does it work?” The graduate with an engineering degree asks, “How does it work?” The graduate with an accounting degree asks, “How much will it cost?” The graduate with an arts degree asks, “Do you want fries with that?”
    6. Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body. One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.” Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections.” The last one said, “No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”
    7. Knock knock. Who’s there? Interrupting coefficient of friction. Interrupting coefficient of fri…. mmmuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu (μ)
    8. Two engineering students were walking across a university campus when one said, “Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.” The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, “Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you anyway.”
    9. An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.” He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog then cried out, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want.” Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.Â
Finally, the frog asked, “What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful princess and that I’ll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won’t you kiss me?” The engineer said, “Look, I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that’s cool.”
    10. A wife asks her husband, a software engineer… “Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6!” A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, “Why the hell did you buy 6 cartons of milk?” He replied, “They had eggs.”
