weather Cloud oceanIt’s 59F and thoroughly clouded over. There’s only a sporadic breeze. On the radio they’re talking about rain this afternoon, but the computer weather doesn’t show all that much chance. Watching the satellite photos there’s a weather system that’s dragging this band of clouds onshore, but it looks like the rain is mostly north of us.

motif plant flower pink white tulip bulbYesterday was long. I did a lot of phone calling early on and then sorted mail for hours. If you haven’t gotten a reply on the shop e-mail for awhile, we’ve been inundated with spam for some reason. Literally thousands in a week! So…. I spent hours sorting that out.

cooking soup food motifI made a nice chowder of some foods that we getting ready to turn on us: the last of the ham, the last of the potatoes, a heart of celery, a couple of onions, and then added seeds, dill, caraway and celery, and then some salt. It simmered away until Tempus got home and added the corn and the cream to each serving. Dang, that was good! I rather reek of onions this morning, though.

motif plant flower purple irisToday we have the usual workshops. I think I need to get into the mugwort box, as well, which should have more of the smaller smudges. We’re going through rather a lot.

220px-Tan_Hill_Inn_and_surrounding_countryside_-_geograph.org.uk_-_154898Today’s Feast is in honor of the Tan Hill Inn, the Sheep Show that happens there around this time of year and other harvest festivals, including celebrations revolving around coal mining. The inn dates to the 17th century and has been refurbished recently. “Tan Hill” refers to “Tinne”, the Celtic tree month of Holly, which ends right around now, not oak trees or leather-making, or even220px-TanHillInn tin mining. It’s Britain’s highest inn at 1,732 feet (528 m) above sea level up in the top of the Yorkshire Dales. The hill seems to have been used back into pre-history as a sacred site of some sort. Shawnee Bread Dance Song
She created us, and so we dance.
She smiles down upon our dance.
She grows happily because we dance.
We are her grandchildren, and so we dance.
Our dance is our best prayer to her.
She laughs in happiness because we dance.
We are her children, and we must dance.
If we were to ever forget, she would weep.
She would never cease her weeping.
She is the mother to whom we dance.
If only insect tracks marked our dancing grounds,
she would forget us too, and we would die.
She is the goddess who dances through us.
We are her children, and we must dance.
She created us, and so we dance.

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – Church Cake!

Have you ever told a white lie? You are going to love this — especially all the ladies who bake for church events.

Alice was to bake a cake for the church ladies’ group bake sale, but she forgot to do it until the last minute.

She baked an angel food cake and when she took it from the oven, the center had dropped flat.

She said, “Oh dear, there’s no time to bake another cake.”

So, she looked around the house for something to build up the center of the cake.

Alice found it in the bathroom … a roll of toilet paper.

She plunked it in and covered it with icing.

The finished product looked beautiful, so she rushed it to the church. Before she left the house, Alice had given her daughter some money and specific instructions to be at the bake sale the minute it opened, and to buy that cake and bring it home.

When the daughter arrived at the sale, the attractive cake had already been sold.

Alice was beside herself.

The next day, Alice was invited to a friend’s home where two tables of bridge were to be played that afternoon.

After the game, a fancy lunch was served, and to top it off, the cake in question was presented for dessert.

Alice saw the cake, she started to get out of her chair to rush into the kitchen to tell her hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, one of the other ladies said, “What a beautiful cake!”

Alice sat back in her chair when she heard the hostess (who was a prominent church member) say,

“Thank you, I baked it myself.”
