Daily Stuff 8-23-15 Vulcanalia

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 9:30. House Capuchin’s Project Day from Noon to 6pm.

campfireEveryone has been talking about fires and smoke for several days. We’re getting hit here, too, to the point where last night we had the bedroom end of the house closed up and the air purifiers going full force. Tempus says that the sun rose as a huge red ball and it’s stayed that way. It’s almost 55F and there’s a good stiff breeze, but the light is a lurid reddish color and there’s a lot of smoke in the air. I’m sneezing and wheezing. The sun is going in and out of cloud…and I’m not certain what the cloud is made of. The smoke here is coming from the Willimina Creek fire, but it’s bad all over Oregon….all over the PNW!

220px-Vetiveria_zizanioides0Yesterday was pretty quiet for a Saturday. The Herb Bunch started a little late, so Tempus and I were already trying to process Vetiver when they got there.  This is a type of grass, a bunch grass, actually. It’s used as a perfume fixative like orris root. We purchased a quantity and it’s been sitting for awhile and we wanted to experiment. It can be used as a substitute for orris and other woods. This stuff was hard 220px-Vetiveria_zizanoides_dsc07810to grind! Tempus tried a paper cutter after Anja failed at getting it to grind in the food processor, then he tried shears. We finally resorted to gnawing it smaller with scissors and then using the good old coffee grinder!

We also worked with roses and honeysuckle and processing plantain as well as exploring

the differences between sword-leaf and broad-leaf plantain. We ended up talking about Castille soap and the soap-making process now and in period and then made some shampoo (from Dr. Bronner’s Castille, a decoction of the vetiver and an infusion of sage blossom). Later in the afternoon I fixed the wood butter and poured a bunch more tins, since the new tins are in.

…and then the sirens started and we noticed the smoke in the air! That was a 082115 Bottle2little hair-raising for awhile. It turned out the sirens were a 4 ambulance and 2 life-flight head-on encounter between a car and a tree near Eckman Lake, but with all the smoke and units screaming over the bridge and heading east and coming up from Yachats, we weren’t sure *what* had happened!

082115 Bottle1I finally sent Tempus home, since it was pretty quiet, customer-wise, and did some sewing, so I have mostly hand-work and stringing to get to today. He was catching up on laundry and I think he got a snooze and we didn’t close the shop until nearly 8:30.

We have the Wicca 101 class first thing this morning and then Project Day is going in the afternoon. We’ve had our Sunday doughnuts and he’s snoring in the armchair in my study. ….and the bottles are the new ones in the bottle displays at the shop.

feast VulcanaliaToday’s feast is the Vulcanalia, sacred to the god Vulcan and the nymphs. Vulcan is the god of the forge and fires. The Divine Sun is part of this festival and work was begun by candlelight so as to emphasize that good aspects of fire. The bad aspects we’re seeing in Yosemite and in Idaho, at the moment. The eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum occurred during this festival in 79CE. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcanalia#Vulcanalia

220px-Rubus_ursinus_10689Today’s plant is the Pacific Blackberry,Rubus ursinus. There are several species of blackberries that grow in the PNW, the nasty invasive one being the Himalayan blackberry,blackberry2Rubus armeniacus. Here are pictures so that you can compare the blossoms, ursinus on the left and armeniacus on the right. Ursinus (from the Latin for “bear”) also has narrower leaves and reddish canes. It is the ancestor of Marionberries, Boysenberries & parent of Loganberries, too. Feminine, Venus, Water, Brigit, Healing, Money, Protection – Carry leaves for money, use blackberry leaves in spring water as healing for burns, in incense for Lughnasadh.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_blackberry

weather moon clearThe Moon forms a right triangle this evening with Antares below it and Saturn to Antares’s left. Or, an almost right triangle — depending on where you are and when you look. Can you see the triangle change shape in the course of the evening? The Moon, in its orbit around Earth, is moving eastward against the stars.
Astro mercuryMercury (magnitude 0.0) lurks very low in bright twilight due west. About 20 minutes after sunset, use binoculars or a wide-field telescope to scan for it just above the horizon. (Don’t confuse it with twinkly Spica, far left and somewhat higher.

A Child’s Evening Prayer

Ere on my bed my limbs I lay
God grant me grace my prayers to say:
O God! preserve my mother dear
In strength and health for many a year;
And, O! preserve my father too,
And may I pay him reverence due;
And may I my best thoughts employ
To be my parents’ hope and joy;
And O! preserve my brothers both
From evil doings and from sloth,
And may we always love each other,
Our friends, our father, and our mother:
And still, O Lord, to me impart
An innocent and grateful heart,
That after my last sleep I may
Awake to thy eternal day!

Mabon Magick – Spells

Reap the Harvest Spell

When we find ourselves repeatedly in situations that yield a grim emotional, spiritual, or physical harvest, we need to look inward to ascertain if the seeds that we are sowing will grow the crops that we desire. To do this, light a green or brown candle. Place malachite in front of the candle representing your heartfelt desire for change. Focusing on the candle, ask for guidance from your higher self in discovering your heart’s desires and ambitions. Script these desires in a visual present tense. State these or similar words:

The universe unfolds her abundant path for me.
Her fruitful harvest is mine,
So mote it be.

Focus the stream of your visualizations on the malachite. That is, visualize the malachite lending vibrations to your vision as it sends your energy out to the universe. Afterward, extinguish the candle. Hold onto the malachite as a reminder of your heart’s harvest. ~Karen Follet )0(  From The Morning Feast Archives

Pagan Studies – Hearth Warming Spell

The Fall Equinox gives us our second balancing point in the year. It also means the last of the harvest will soon be taken in. From this night onward the veil that separates our world from the spirit world grows ever thinner until, by Samhain, it will be open for all to pass through. In Welsh legends the land of the dead is in the western sea. To reach it you first had to pass several challengers along your path through Avalon, the vast orchard of apples that guarded and guided travelers. Apples are a gift from the dead and the deities. Their orchard guards the pathway to the schools of magic and the land of the dead beyond. To make your home a happy place to be, take a big red apple and slice it crossways so you can see the the five-pointed star within. Remove the seeds and keep them away from children and pets. They contain trace amounts of cyanide, a deadly poison. Cover the entire white part of the apple by sticking cloves into it. Cloves are for protection and health. Place these in a 200-degree oven until they start to curl at the edges. Remove them from the heat and place them in a small glass bowl so their scent fills your home. Say:

Bless’d be the apple tree. Protected with the cloves we be. Edain McCoy

Ancient Ones Harvest Spell – Pagan Studies

Harvest was a time for families, communities, and friends to come together. During harvest, special cakes were made in a ritual manner, and each person in the family or group would partake of this sacred meal.

Mix together one cup oat flour, one pinch baking soda, two pinches of salt, and one teaspoon of melted butter. Add hot water to form the dough, roll it on a board, and cut it into shapes. Cook the bread in the oven at 375 degrees until it is nicely toasted.

Share it with your tribe or family, reciting these words:

Consecrate the produce of our land.
Bestow prosperity and peace
In the names of the gods and goddesses,
And in the names of the ancient ones.

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – Monopoly

Growing up as a kid, I learned all about capitalism through the board game Monopoly. I mean, what better way to teach a young mind the way our economy functions.

I loved this game and still do. Only now, as an adult I have some questions that remain unanswered.

For instance, if I have all this money and own all this real estate…why am I still driving around in a thimble?
