It’s only 42F here in Medford! It’s supposed to get up to 87F or so, but it’s just past 7:20 in the morning. When the sun rose over the mountains into a clear sky it fell right on the window of the hotel. We’re facing east and it woke me.
I spent awhile after my stuff was packed and Tempus went back to bed, doing some stuff in the garden while I was waiting for Marius. Once he got there Tempus staggered out of bed to drag the cooler, etc. out. I wasn’t going to wake him, but he woke anyway, and saw us off.
We rolled down the coast, talking all the way, checking places in Yachats on the way through. We stopped in Florence at the A&W for the required root beer float and got pictures at various points. We stopped in Gardiner to say hi to the guardian tree and then after we turned inland in Reedsport saw a herd of elk and got pix.
By the time we got to Aurora to the Heaven on Earth restaurant we were developing car buns and we really in need of a bathroom. We had one of the best cinnamon buns I’ve ever eaten and after Rowan and Tammi got there had an awesome lunch.
It was another hour to Medford after that and we were really ready to see our room. We sat around, snoozing or playing, on phones or computer and talking. The east end of the sunset was lovely over Mt. McLaughlan especially as the Girdle of Venus rose. We were all too tired to head out to the event.
Right at about 8pm we realized that we’d better get the printing done. The business center at the motel was out of order, so Marcus and I went to the Staples in Medford to get that done. On the way back I got some Arby’s for supper and then when we got back Marcus took Tammi to get theirs.
When everyone was back we ended up tagging and counting some of the projects that we are giving away today.
Today we’ll be out at the event all day. Tempus will be at the shop.
Hippocrates is credited with being the father of modern medicine. He is honored on this day, (which may be the 2472 anniversary of his birth) along with all doctors and medical practitioners. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocrates The picture is a Czech stamp with the symbol for a medical vehicle with a doctor on board. The image in the center is the Rod of Aesculapius, which is the proper symbol for the medical profession, unlike the usual Caduceus that we see in the US.
Today’s Plant is the Western Azalea, Rhododendron Occidentale. I’ve talked before about the azaleas being a subset of the rhodys. This is the main one that grows around here. It’s hard to tell from the shape and size of the plant that it’s an azalea, or even from the flowers, although the branches are thinner and the leaves shorter and rounder than those of rhododendrons. It least it’s hard for those of us who are familiar with the showy garden hybrids, which tend to be small and compact. The other West Coast azalea is Rhododendron Albiflorum, and there’s not a whacking lot of info floating around about that one. The wiki is here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhododendron_occidentale The Chinese call azaleas “thinking of home bush”. Magickal uses for azalea are to encourage light spirits, happiness and gaiety.

Celtic Tree Month of Muin/Vine Sep 2 – 29
Runic half-month of Kenaz/Ken/Kebo – September 13-27 – Ken represents a flaming torch within the royal hall, so it’s the time of the creative fire – the forge where natural materials are transmuted by the force of the human will into a mystical third, an artifact that could not otherwise come into being. The positive aspects of sexuality that are immanent in Freya and Frey come into play at this time. Nigel Pennick, The Pagan Book of Days, Destiny Books, Rochester, Vermont, USA, 1992, p. 102

Celtic Tree Month of Muin/Vine Sep 2 – 29 – Muin – (MUHN, like “foot”), vine – The grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is a vine growing as long as 35 m (115 feet), in open woodlands and along the edges of forests, but most commonly seen today in cultivation, as the source of wine, grape juice, and the grape juice concentrate that is so widely used as a sweetener. European grapes are extensively cultivated in North America, especially in the southwest, and an industry and an agricultural discipline are devoted to their care and the production of wine. Grapes are in the Grape family (Vitaceae).

Life is the only way
to get covered in leaves,
catch your breath on the sand,
rise on wings;
to be a dog,
or stroke its warm fur;
to tell pain
from everything it’s not;
to squeeze inside events,
dawdle in views,
to seek the least of all possible mistakes.
An extraordinary chance
to remember for a moment
a conversation held
with the lamp switched off;
and if only once
to stumble upon a stone,
end up soaked in one downpour or another,
mislay your keys in the grass;
and to follow a spark on the wind with your eyes;
and to keep on not knowing
something important. – Wislawa Szymborska (Monologue of a Dog, translated by S. Baranczak and C. Cavanagh)
Kore Chant: Spring and Fall Equinox
Her name cannot be spoken,
Her face was not forgotten,
Her power is to open,
Her promise can never be broken.
All seeds She deeply buries,
She weaves the thread of seasons.
Her secret, darkness carries,
She loves beyond all reason.
She changes everything She touches, and
Everything She touches, changes. (Repeat-chant.)
Change is, touch is; Touch is, change is.
Change us! Touch us! Touch us! Change us!
Everything lost is found again,
In a new form, In a new way.
Everything hurt is healed again,
In a a new life, In a new day.
Judge to the court, at the start of a case: “I have to declare an interest in this case. Last week, the plaintiff sent me a check for $10,000 to find in his favor.
Two days later, I received $20,000 from the defendant to find in his favor.
I have therefore sent $10,000 back to the defendant and can try the case without bias.”
