Daily Stuff 3-3-16 Aegir

Hi, folks!

The sunshine is bright and beautiful this morningpart sun weather motif! I’m going to enjoy it while we’ve got it…. It looks like today is going to be nice….well, it’s 59F, already! …and tomorrow should start nice, in any case. It’s nice and breeze, enough to thrash the tree branches pretty steadily.

weather rain showerYesterday didn’t look so bad when I got going for the day, but as the afternoon went on it got darker and darker and the rain came in and the wind, until by 5pm it was already deep twilight. The “blowing curtain” effect of the white blooms on the clematis was wonderful! Tempus was working in the kitchen and I on newsletter set-up.

food motif veg garlicI started on processing the garlics in the afternoon. They were mostly peeled, all by the tiny ones from the centers and those I squashed in a press into the food processor bowl, so’s to get the rest of the “paper” off. Eventually I got the rest of the cloves “tipped” (taking the root ends and brown spots off) and 3/4 filled the food processor bowl with garlic! That’s a lot! Next step was to start it processing and then I added just enough olive oil for a to let it process to a thick slurry. After that it all went into cup and 1/2 cup boxes and all but one into the freezer. Yes, oil will freeze. The stuff keeps pretty well that way and even in soups and things the oil isn’t enough to cause problems. It helps when a container-full is added to rice and such, too.

herb garlic Allium_sativum_Woodwill_1793Garlic is one of those wonderful herbs in cooking. Not only is it magically cleansing, it’s marvelously tasty even in small amounts. A good cook will add it and you’ll notice, not the garlic flavor, but only that the dish tastes great!

Masculine, Earth, Mars, Hecate – Magickal uses include healing, protection, exorcism, chasing vampires (both actual and psychic), and purification of spaces and objects. Guards against negative magic, spirits, and the envy of others. Hang in the home to bring togetherness to the family. Hang by bed or desk to keep your willpower strong. Wards off bad weather when worn or carried during outside activities (without throwing off natural cycles!) Absorbs diseases — rub fresh, peeled garlic against ailing body parts then throw the garlic into running water.

plant pic garlic braidTempus headed for our friend’s to keep on with getting stuff shifted so she can get through with a wheelchair. After that he was going to do some work on the spot we’re moving into to make room for some of the boxes and set up the air purifier. He had one of my orchids to move into the greenhouse, too. I did a little more packing and more kitchen work and then went back to newsletters.

Today we’ll be at the shop. Yes, we’ll be open, even if we’re doing inventory. Sewing is from 3-5pm this afternoon.

Today’s plant is Field or Scouring Rush Horsetail  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_horsetail,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equisetum  plant herb Equisetum_arvense_frThe darned things are next to impossible to get rid of, although they’re fascinating in construction and growth habit. In Oregon they’re a noxious weed, since, while the plants have been used as a poverty food (early spring) they can be toxic to grazing animals and are dangerous to people who retain fluid, although the Romans used it both as a tea and a thickening powder. It can be used as a polish and a dye. – Feminine, Saturn, Earth, This is best used in fertility mixtures, sachets, amulets, etc. Place in the bedroom for help in conception. Whistles made of horsetail stems are used in snake charming.

Constellation Carina Canopus astroHave you ever seen Canopus, the second-brightest star after Sirius? Canopus lies almost due south of Sirius: by 36°. That’s far enough south that it never appears above your horizon unless you’re below latitude 37° N (southern Virginia, southern Missouri, central California). And there you’ll need a flat south horizon. Canopus crosses the south point on the horizon just 21 minutes before Sirius does. When to look? Canopus is due south when Beta Canis Majoris — Mirzim the Announcer, the star a few finger-widths to the right of Sirius — is at its highest point due south (about 7 or 8 p.m. now, depending on how far east or west you are in your time zone). Look straight down from Mirzim then.
Astro jupiterJupiter (magnitude –2.5, by the hind foot of Leo) is nearing its March 8th opposition. It rises in the east in twilight, shines highest in the south around midnight or 1 a.m., and by dawn it’s low in the west, so is visible all night. See our telescopic guide to Jupiter in the March Sky & Telescope, page 48. There are a number of interesting double shadow crossings by Jupiter’s inner three moons late in the month.

Ostara Magick – Spells

OSTARA- Daffodowndilly Spell

The purpose of this spell is to make wishes concerning all areas of your life.

This is the perfect time of year for planting wishes that will come to fruition in summer and using plant ingredients for magic is a age old custom.

You will need:

one green candle
one yellow candle
matches or lighter
summer flowering bulbs, one to a wish
soil or potting soil in a medium sized indoor planter

As part of your OSTARA ritual and in a properly cast circle, work as follows.

  1. Light the green candle saying: By the shoot
  2. Light the yellow candle saying: By the flower I invoke OSTARA’s power
  3. Take each bulb and separately name it after the wish you seek to achieve.
  4. Hold them in your hands and chant your wish into them with the following words: As the nights shrink down and this bulb goes underground, As the days grow long, so the thing I wish grows strong.
  5. Bury the bulbs in the soil, or potting soil. Place your hands palms down on the soil and visualize the growth you have wished for coming to pass.
  6. Keep the bulbs inside until the threat of frost has passed, then plant outside next to the spring flowering bulbs.

The idea here is to trade on the fertility of the daffodils by empowering summer flowering bulbs and planting them closely by. The summer bulbs will get the general idea from the flowering daffodown dillies and charged with your wishes hurry to grow and flower.
