There was bright sunshine pouring in through the study window when I came out here, but there were ominously grey clouds to the east. It’s been going back and forth from sun to shadow since. 52F with a light breeze and they’re talking rain in the later part of the afternoon.
Yesterday was a little on the crazy side. The Simples workshop was very bare bones, but it’s going to be the basis for a full-scale class at some point in the future. The next Herbs Workshop on 4/9 will be on more of the simples.
Tempus was putting up an organizer when Marius got to the shop, so Marius took me into Newport to try to get a tuning key for my psaltery and maybe strings. Nope…didn’t have either one, so I either need to order online or go to Gracewinds or something.
After we got back the two of them went and moved furniture for several hours. We have a couple of display cases to work with at the shop, now. I was moving things, sorting papers and finally started carving a spoon.
Today is more of the same, minus Marius.
Just too cute!
Today’s plant is the California Poppy, Eschscholzia californica.Everyone knows this one, right? 🙂 This is a different plant from the opium poppy and contains a different set of chemicals. It has the same magickal uses, however. The locals used it for an analgesic. –Feminine, Moon, Water, Hypnos, Demeter. – Use in dream pillows and other sleep aids. Eat poppy seed as a fertility charm. Carry as a prosperity charm (money & luck). Make a sachet of flowers and tuck a question inside. Sleep on it. the answer will appear in a dream. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschscholzia_californica
Today’s feast is that of Gauri, one of the names of Parvati, the Great Mother in the Hindu traditions. One of her great festivals is held around this time of year. She is a fertility aspect of goddess, associated with the corn, hence the name “Gauri” which means “fair complexion” and has a lot of different symbolism. This article here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parvati has more information, but search for “Gauri” to find the specifics.

Draw a line from Castor through Pollux, and follow it farther out by a big 26° (about 2½ fist-widths at arm’s length). You’re at the dim head of Hydra, the Sea Serpent. In a dark sky it’s a subtle but distinctive asterism about the size of your thumb at arm’s length. Binoculars show it easily through light pollution.
Mars (about magnitude –0.5, at the head of Scorpius), rises around midnight daylight-saving time. Before dawn it blazes yellow-orange in the south, to the right of dimmer Saturn. In a telescope Mars is about 12 arcseconds in diameter — quite big enough now to show surface features in a good 3-inch scope at high power during good seeing. By its opposition and closest approach in late May, Mars will quadruple in brightness and grow to 18.6 arcseconds wide. See our telescopic guide to Mars in the April Sky & Telescope, page 48.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

~ I’ve continued to recognize the power individuals have to change virtually anything and everything in their lives in an instant. Cashew and Tea Healing Energy Spell GrannyMoon’s Cauldron –
Brew a cup of strong chamomile tea today to start raising some good healthy energy. Sit with the tea in both hands, and visualize a protective energy egg surrounding you. See this energy protecting you on all sides. This healing energy permeates every cell of your being and flows out through your skin into your home. Visualize healing energy filling your home and the space around your home. It creates a healing buffer that helps maintain your health and keeps your energy balanced. Charge the tea with this energy. Steep a cashew in the tea for three minutes, allowing it to fully soak up the energies you charged the tea with. Plant the cashew in a household plant in the center of your home. As you plant it, imagine the healing energy radiating out from this central spot to fill your home. It will revitalize everyone that enters this place and bless all who live here.

Ilmatars Egg Spell – August 26th, 2007
Color of the day: Amber Incense of the day: Pine
Today is Ilmatar’s Feast Day. According to Finnish mythology, Ilmatar is the Water Mother who created the world. Nesting on the waters, she laid seven eggs, six of gold and one of iron. From these eggs she made everything. The Finns honor Ilmatar by feasting, dancing, and staying up all night. What do you create? How do you express yourself? Celebrate your creativity by giving it a place to live. You’ll need a hollow, resealable golden egg such as those pantyhose come in. Fill the egg with items corresponding to inspiration: herbs such as cinnamon, honeysuckle, mint, vervain; stones like fluorite, sodalite, rutilated quartz. Then say:
What will be
What has been
Some may wait
Glue the egg closed. Decorate the outside with stars, spirals, or other magical signs. Keep it in a safe place, such as on your altar. By: Elizabeth Barrette
