Yesterday it was 77 when I walked into the shop and during the day it got up to 87. All the balls had dropped in the thermometer by noon and it just kept getting warmer. I’m not used to it and I melted. By 5pm I just had no energy left and I sat.
<<<<<<<<<< Raspberry <<<<<<<<<<<<
Earlier in the day I had been setting up, printing, cutting and attaching tags. After that, unless customers were in, I sat and stitched, working on some more of those pincushion tops.
Today is supposed to be cooler. Tempus is paying bills and as soon as this is done I’m going to start working up some more orders.
Today’s Plant is Sword fern, Polystichum munitum. It grows all winter on the coast, getting greener and lovelier every year as the new fiddles come up out of the center of the plant and develop into fronds. I’ve been enjoying those, watching them for months, now. they can get to be 6 feet tall and some of the ones down in the park where the stream crosses through are that size! The indigenes used the rhizome as a poverty food (baked and peeled), and the fronds are one of the best remedies for relieving the pain from the sting of a Stinging Nettle. It is also commonly used by florists as an ornamental plant. – Masculine, Air, The God, the Puck. – This is an herb of masculine power, protection and luck. Use in spells to guide to treasure. Burn to drive away pests.…and as any fern, burn for rain…. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_fern
The Florifertum is a wheat offering for the end of the Floralia, the feast of the Goddess of plant life, Flora, held on this day. This Goddess in England (and in most of Europe by other names) is known as Helen or Elaine. Sarn Helen means a straight track, a ley-line road, which existed from Pre-Celtic times through to the take-over of Christianity and can still be seen connecting sacred places. Being that these are roads, that also makes them sacred to Hecate, who is honored both now, and at the opposite station on the Wheel of the Year, at Samhain. Celtic Tree Month of Saille/Willow, Apr 15 – May 12
Runic half-month of Laguz, April 29-May 13 – Stands for: Water (or Lake) Color: Black & White (Green) Casting meaning: Laguz represents the power of water and its easy flowing nature. We must learn to “go with the flow” when this rune shows up in a reading so that we can take full advantage of our powers.

Celtic Tree Month of Saille/Willow, Apr 15 – May 12 – The Willow in the Tree alphabet stands for the female and lunar rhythms of life. She is water-seeking, thriving from preference on the damp margins of lakes and streams or across the low-lying water meadows. Water and the tidal movements of the sea are governed by the pull of the moon. The moon in its monthly rhythms is female, contrasting with the male sun’s daily and yearly turnings. In several ways, the Celts held women in higher regard than we do today. On the material level, women were property owners, and whoever controlled the property controlled the marriage. Women of all types and ages appeared in the Celtic pantheon, the spiritual strength and life-giving qualities given by both female and male recognized equally. There were colleges of Druidesses – learned women and teachers – respected equally for their gifts of see-ship, often expressed through dreams, or night visions.
Magical Associations: Romantic love, healing, protection, fertility, magic for women.

The only sadnesses that are dangerous and unhealthy are the ones that we carry around in public in order to drown them out with the noise; like diseases that are treated superficially and foolishly, they just withdraw and after a short interval break out again all the more terribly; and gather inside us and are life, are life that is unlived, rejected, lost, life that we can die of. – Rilke
There I lay napping, when what came rapping on my 6th chakra door, but two flights of thealogical fancy, that changed my thoughts forevermore! Lo, that fateful Mabon day!
I have a story for you that I will dub: The Mabon Day Revelations. So much to share, so many ribbons finally tied into neat, understandable bows. All POE-etics aside, let me paint the backdrop of this vivid moment of September 23rd for you:
The Sojo Traveling Road Show just returned from the epic adventure to vend at the Pagan Pride Raleigh festival the previous day, and I’m considerably exhausted. It was a lovely weekend spent in the company of 3000+ pagans who meet with such good will every year. This is also a family reunion for us, as we get to see many from our Tribe who live in that area.
We’ve also just held our first Sojo Tribe Mabon feast that was able to welcome in the dedicants from our sister circle in Benson, NC, who are in their first Turning of the Wheel together. I realized that we have over 40 members now part of our extended spiritual family who have chosen to remain with us. After 5 years, and a hiving off or two, we have grown to impressive proportions.
To date, this is the most mature, civilized and responsible group of human beings I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with, and there are no finer Witches to be found. It is a rare thing to have a teaching circle last so long without strain from diva-drama. If you are a Witch who has been around any amount of time who HASN’T been involved in Witchwar or a Coven-splosion, you are a rare and blessed Witch. I’ve thought a lot recently about why we have been so successful with group cohesion and upstanding behavior for so long. I think it comes down to the cornerstone “rules” of engagement which we reaffirm magickally by way of our class candle at the beginning of every meeting.
That crisp morning, I was cruising the Facebook Newsfeed, when I happen across a very serious posting by author, Raven Grimassi, lamenting how many within the witching communities are so quick to assume the worst of each other, and how some unbalanced Witches, who should know better, truly do stoop to low levels of back-stabbing, and slandering each other in very public, destructive and unflattering ways. His commentary asked us to become the kind of people who seek out the best in each other, rather than constantly harping on the worst in each other. (This is my paraphrase, I’d quote it for you, but I do believe he deleted the post.)
Anyway, I read this sad, but accurate, appraisal just as I was laying down for a nap. As my three kitties snuggled in around me, and I drifted off to sleep, I was thinking about the “Rules of Witchcraft” that have developed over the previous several years within my classes, as we have faced these same problems. We’ve tried to evolve into healthy, balanced relationships with the Divine, natural cycles, and each other in the Sojo Tribe, but also with society and in ALL our relationships.
These “Rules of Witchcraft” are now our punchline and talking point, as we explore all the many layers of meaning and practical application they provide. This list started as a quip-y way to illustrate many of the thealogical viewpoints I teach, as I see them growing in logical progression from the sacred poetry of Wicca, modern psychology, and the occult wisdom from which it is derived in the Western Esoteric traditions.
Until Monday, we had two so-called rules: Don’t Burn the Witch, and Don’t be the Asshole. As I descended into sleep, I mulled over these two maxims and how this is basically what Raven was asking of his FB readers:
Heron’s First Rule of Modern Witchcraft: Don’t burn the Witch.
The obvious: Basic fire safety. If you are going to work with the element of Fire and invite those energies into your work with the lighting of candles, bonfires, incense, and such, you should first learn respect for its potential, and then avoid accidents. Mind that your flowing mane does not blow into the Tiki torches, because nothing ruins a good ritual like an urgent need for a paramedic. “I banish thee, oh powers of fire, from these third degree burns!” is not nearly as effective as you might hope.
The less obvious: Be careful not to conjure up what you aren’t ready to handle and don’t know how to safely send back. Just because you can buy a book on high ceremonial magick on Amazon, does not necessarily mean you are prepared to do this thing safely. This goes forOuija boards. They are just tools, powerful and useful tools, with roots in Spiritualism, but they are now manufactured by Hasbro and available at Walmart. The people of Walmart can open a portal to the Spirit realm for the low, low price of $19.21. You can even get one that glows in the dark, but I’d rather you didn’t. I run a metaphysical store, and good gods, y’all (!) the stories I’ve heard that follow, “Well, it all started when we were playing with a Ouija board at a party….” and usually end with, “Can you help me vanquish a demon?” <eyeroll>
But to those of you “fain to learn all sorcery, I will reveal this secret:” The laws of Hermetics, tell us that all things vibrate, and that like vibrations attract like vibrations. If you remain a big, pulsing magnet of wound, hatred, anger and self-loathing, then no matter how much “love and light” your mouths speak, nor even how your candle is inscribed, you are doomed to repeat your past suffering. Your endeavors will only bring misery to all around you. If you continue to harbor those wounds without any attempt to heal yourself first, then you will never evolve beyond “wounded consciousness” and all your magick will ever garner you is a good ol’ fashioned witch burning of YOURSELF.
Words to the Wise: Empowerment starts with YOU. Wisdom starts with YOU. Healing starts with YOU. Magick starts with YOU. YOU ARE THE MAGICK, so make it beneficial, effective, whole, balanced, harmonious, kick-ass magick, sourced by Divine Love. Trust me, I’ve been at this for 20+ years and I learned these things the stupid way: Everything in the Universe is Divine Love, and the dance with it’s polar opposite, the Fear of the Lack of Love. (Read more about this on my Divine Love blogs, here and here.)
Maybe you think that sounds fluffy, but I promise you that with enough time you will either figure this out with a kiss or a spanking, or you’ll devolve into madness. Need I remind you of all the dastardly bastards of the occult who went mad, addicted, impoverished, criminal, or died of terrible diseases? This is all part of my “Unicorn” theory… I’ll blog on that next…
The wise seeker on this path will start by loving themselves, healing and forgiving themselves, and all those who have harmed them in the past. The FIRST step on the path of the Witch is to learn to recognize these wounds for what they are, release all lingering connection to those baneful energies, and heal themselves from the inside out. Love yourself first. THEN, and only then, can you begin to break the cycle of woundings and become a being of power and responsibility.
Perfect Love and Perfect Trust: STOP burning your fellow Witches! This rule speaks most importantly to the moral imperative to cease attacking our fellows within the pagan and witching community. My interpretation of “Perfect Love” is that it is unconditional, and that just as the Divine is whole, complete in both poles of every equation, so are we all, and we can accept each other as complete beings, warts and all.
“Perfect trust” implies a social contract in that each member can both trust that they will be accepted even though they have their fair share of warts, but that they are also behaving in a trustworthy way in return, so that we CAN give each other the benefit of the doubt; trustworthy until proven otherwise. “I will trust in your good intentions as I strive to be trustworthy.” This is my mantra. (Side note: woe be unto those who are proven otherwise, reference below about the flying monkeys.)
In the name of all things holy, please work to protect each other! I am appalled that the words “Witch War” were ever conjoined. We have a hard enough time not being “burned” by the rest of society, if we can’t treat each other with respect, what are we playing at?
The Second Rule of Modern Witchcraft: Don’t be the Asshole.
I hope you are laughing. Poignant, but you know what I mean. You know the kind of jerk I’m talking about, right? Mind you, I didn’t say, Don’t bean asshole, this is not a permanent condition. These are about behavioral choices. I realize that to illustrate what I mean by an “asshole” I’ll have to recap from my Divine Love blog what I mean by “love.”
So here is my list so far of the conditions necessary for me to feel loved, and by extension, fulfilled, happy and in balance:
- Acceptance: When I feel safe to be my whole self; when my inner truth can be expressed outwardly without risk of rejection, including acceptance within my community, social group, family, friendship, lovers. My emotional boundaries are not being threatened.
- Sovereignty: When my absolute authority over my own body, mind, emotions, and spirit are respected and I have FREE WILL to be master of my fate, and make my own decisions as a being of dignity and worth. My free will and liberty are not threatened.
- Resources: When I know I have access to sufficient resources to make sure my physical needs of food, water, oxygen, temperature, and shelter will be met. My survival is not threatened.
- Affection: We are social beasts, there is just no more base truth than how all human beings need touch and nurturing, and how ADULT humans need sexual gratification to be well-rounded, healthy people. My sexual identity is not threatened.
- Expression: When I have a means of expressing my needs/opinions as a sovereign being, and have the respect of being heard by others around me as an important person of dignity and worth. I want my place at the table, and in the voting booth, etc. My sovereignty is not threatened.
- Security: When I can let down my guard and relax in safety, emotionally, mentally and physically, and get a good night’s sleep; when my physical boundaries are not trespassed, also when my privacy is respected. My physical safety is not threatened.
- Authenticity: When I know that I can trust that the outward appearance and declaration of any person, product, and circumstance is the actual truth, without deception or trickery. When I am not exploited.
- Trustworthy, an extension of Authenticity: Are YOU worthy of my care, are YOU worthy to be treated with sovereignty, can I trust your expression to be well intentioned? Are the other people around me granting me the same level of courtesy, honesty, dignity, worth, security, etc., that I’m investing in them? My trust and faith in my environment are not threatened.
What makes one an Asshole?
By my definition, when you are being the asshole, you are the person violating any of the above conditions for the loving co-existence of others around you. I challenge you to think of any example of assholery you’ve every witnessed or experienced first hand and then go back over that list and see which one of those love conditions it violated. If you think of something this list does NOT cover, please let me know.
Do what you will, but Harm none. ~The Wiccan Rede
You are Divine, and through the path of the Witch, you seek to know what it means to live life as a benefit, and not a detriment. You seek to create change in accordance with your Will. You seek to fully engage with the powers of the Universe so that you can have the life of happiness, balance and satisfaction that you deserve. Yes? As you should.
Yet, in any situation, with every action we take in our personal choices, our interactions with people, animals, society, the unseen hosts, or the natural world, we have that choice: benefit, or detriment, both on the macro level and the micro level, and this can take enormous wisdom and powers of discretion to navigate because the exact same action in one case makes you the asshole, and in another case makes you the hero.
For example: Administering a lethal dose of sedative to euthanize an old and suffering animal with a terminal illness? This is an act of love and you are a hero. Administering a lethal dose of sedative to your neighbors dog, while he’s not home, because the dog won’t stop barking at night and that pisses you off? This is an act of selfishness and harm, and you are the asshole.
If you are violating any of the above listed ways in which LOVE is expressed, felt, and needed, then you are doing harm, and that harm will resonate outward by orders of magnitude. We call that the three-fold law. You are the problem, and it is now the duty of any responsible witch, teacher, friend, partner, neighbor, citizen, government, army, officer, official, EPA, social services, SPCA, etc., to stop you from doing this harm, and good riddance.
That is how we will love you that day, by taking no shit and putting your ass back in line. The wise Witch knows when to become the warrior, stand in their truth, living authentically, out loud, and yet doing so with ego properly aligned with Divine Will; being gracious and merciful even when you need to crack a few heads and defend the boundaries–because today I am loving you by saying NO, and YOU SHALL NOT PASS whatever boundary is being trespassed. My favorite phrase is “Don’t make me release my flying monkeys.” There will bekarmic balance in the world eventually, and some days I become karma’s little helper, kinda like a magickal law enforcement officer.
How do I navigate “harm none?” I focus my intention on binding harmful actions, and baneful thought forms, diminishing the harmful effect of ill-informed choices. It does no benefit to harm or seek vengeance on a wounded person who is behaving badly. I send love, light and Reiki into the wounds, and ease the dis-ease of the heart and mind. Help to defeat fears, and secure resources, or any of the above “love” requirements that may be the root of these evil actions. Then I protect those who would be affected by the malevolent reek of those rogue beings until such time that they learn their healing lessons. Like I said, sometimes you learn these lessons with a kiss, and sometimes with a spanking. I am happy to administer both. I love you that much.
Then you step back in peace and “hold the space,” or “Be silent” centered in compassion, honoring that wounds drive the harmful behavior of others. This way we can dismiss the drama and not engage in histrionics that cannot serve any good. There is only one way I intend to expend my energy: effectively.
The Third Rule of Modern Witchcraft: Don’t be the Weak Link
Allow me to circle back to the Mabon Day Revelations: As I lay there napping, I pondered the meaning of a third rule, and all I wanted it to express, but I didn’t yet have a memorable and sarcastic way to express it. It wanted to be something like, “Responsibility begins and ends with you.” Or “Be the circle.” Boring, right?
Back to me dreaming away during this nap, I find myself hanging out with the Sojo Tribe at Affirmation Farms, the home of my dear friends who run the second teaching circle to emerge from The Sojo program, and everyone is there having a great time. We are talking about Raven’s post, and how folks just need to understand how the rules work and they wouldn’t be such assholes.
I awake just partially so, with a foot in both dreaming and waking worlds, still thinking about the problem of this third rule, how beneficial and responsible behavior has to both begin and end with yourself, regardless of if anyone is watching, creating a strong circle….oh, and how important is the circle to the Witch, am I right? Everything is better, stronger, more effective in the sacred circle.
Then I see this image of the tapestry of the Universe, matter and spirit woven together, and it becomes a cloth of chainmaille armor, with each entity and person within it their own circle link, pliable enough to have free will, sovereign and strong enough on their own, but together….together, they can do so much more! If all links remain strong within their own character, making beneficial choices, using their energy cohesively, effectively, taking responsibility to both begin and end every interaction in alignment with Divine Will, their moral code and principles, using their power, intellect, hearts and bodies to weave together a responsible world within their own sphere of influence, then together we create a web within which we can all coexist in harmony, to ENORMOUS, reverberating benefit.
Then the vision shifted and I saw how if one person, one link, weakens, frays, sees themselves as a straight line pointing only to their own selfish, ego-driven needs, starts to “burn” themselves through self-loathing, or project that self-loathing onto others as distrust, who becomes the asshole who wields their own wound as a weapon to wound other people; through this weakness of character and irresponsibility, they betray the bonds of the surrounding links, betraying perfect love and trust, exploiting the natural environment, disrupting their relationship to the Divine through each other. That hole in the chainmaille grows, and ruins things exponentially throughout existence.
There is your three-fold law demonstrated, my dearies. If you exude beneficial energy in the world you receive benefit. If you exude destructive energy in the world, you are destroyed. If you work with unity, for unity, all of Divine creation flows with you. It is so simple. It only takes one weak link to ruin the “armor” of harmonious existence for everyone.
“Don’t be the Weak Link” blazes into my mind’s eye, glowing in green light. YES! THAT’S IT! How pithy. How cliche. How marvelous.
The Fourth Rule of Modern Witchcraft: Must be Present to Win
As the green blaze of the third rule still glowed in the vision, I rose to waking consciousness, excited and seeking my trusty pen and journal, when before I could fully rise, MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN damn near bullies its way into my vision. Seriously, in bold font, in towering letters, it was like an episode of sesame street animation where these words rumble in a deep voice and it kinda echos and shakes and gets in my face.
Huh. Whaddaya know about that? Unbidden, direct from Spirit, the Mabon Day Revelations. Must be present to win.
I totally got it, as this had been an undercurrent in many of my thoughts lately as my Great Work learning about Divine Love and how to apply that practically in the world came into harvest. Aphrodite’s lessons are becoming a wee bit tidier of late, thank goddess.
The Obvious: This harkens back to the old fashioned rules about the seeker asking the Witch three times, and being denied three times, before being accepted for training. You have to be dogged in your determination to follow this path, because it is thorny, unpleasant and not suitable for everyone. It is neither glamorous, nor easy, it does not serve those who would wield the title to gain acclaim, or riches, or control over others. When done with correct perspective, humility and balance it does come with enormous benefits for those brave enough and determined enough to be fully present and make whatever sacrifices are required. This path demands that you keep showing up, every day, on all levels, for the rest of your life.
Show Up: This nugget of wisdom informs me that you have to show up. Get up off your couch, stop whining, stop wishing, stop bending over and taking that beating, get yourself forthwith to the crossroads and DO THE WORK. Know what you want, apply the fires of your passion to the work, dare to overcome all obstacles, and then be so fully awake in wonderment, surrendered to the flow, accepting of the mysterious vastness of possibility that the Universe is rendered luminous and saturated in miracles.
Wake up: Each exquisite moment is a gift not to be squandered; fully present in the joy and the pain, the abundance and the lack, the spanking and the kiss, even the love AND the fear of a lack of love. All of it, courageously undertaken, because they hone your wisdom and power and propel you forward in your evolution.
Be the Warrior Witch: You have to put your keister where your values lie. Protest, sit-in, march, vote, armor up, take up the magickal weapons, stare down the Balrog to defend the boundaries. To be a Witch is to seek the Truth within, then live it without in every breath. You have to speak up, confront your fears and tackle them into submission. If you want love you have to go out and seek it, be love, give love and you will receive all your heart desires. No matter what the desire or issue, it can only be solved by being fully present, listening, observing, engaging compassionately with people in person, especially when there is a conflict to resolve or a need to be met.
Be proud: Hiding behind facades, in broom closets, faking it, pretending to be something you aren’t to make other people happy, selling out, giving up your voice, your vote, your ideals, being mute, is no way to live and you deserve so much more, my beautiful ones. Witches of good conscience cannot continue to knuckle under to, nor ignore, the “witch burners” of our society, nor blithely accept the divisive behavior of those among us who would sully our good standing as they lob hate-bombs as some “anonymous” troll on the internet, or use their position or voice to instigate abuse, gossip, slander, liable against our own.
With no fool a season spend, nor be counted as their friend: “Haters” of any stripe cannot simultaneously claim to be a witch and be taken seriously. Defrock them. Warlock them (in the most traditional sense of term “warlock” being the banishment from the coven as an “oath-breaker” and a binding of their harm.) If their magickal weapon of choice is ye’ old dagger between their enemy’s shoulder blades, or the flaming torch chucked into the tinder of the unsuspecting without engagement in a civilized conversation, then they are not a witch, they are a fool. The long version of the Wiccan Rede states: With no fool a season spend, nor be counted as their friend. If you do nothing, you are guilty by association.
Your Mission if you choose to accept it: I know this will be met with much resistance, probably even a disregarding of this message, and I know it will be a challenge, but this Mabon Day Revelation for me is that we, as witches, will be better served if we complete our migration out into the light of day, forever away from the shadowy lie of the broom closet. Mind you, there is no need to shout it from the rooftops. We require no “public profession of faith.” No parade is necessary, just the mere outer acknowledgement, where it is effective, while we unshutter our flames like lighthouses on the rocky shores of this society; not chasing the ships, just standing tall and sturdy, and shining brightly without shame. The blinding light from so many fully-realized witches will dazzle and confuse the muggles, anyway, so we have that distraction working for us.
This will take time, care, and patience. Every liberation movement came with risks and Rome was neither built nor destroyed in a day. But hear this: WE ARE WITCHES. If we cannot take up the power to be fully present and beneficial in this society, accurately known for our contributions, then who can be?
The next step:
After I awoke from my nap, I engaged Spirit in a conversation about each of these ideas using the tarot. In subsequent blogs, I will share those images, and my interpretations with you, with hopes that you will engage in this discussion and help to hone the message in a way that is useful to you individually.
