Daily Stuff 10-30-16 Rhyne Toll

Hi, folks!

House Capuchin Shield2House Capuchin’s Project Day from Noon to 6pm!

weather Rain54F, steady rain, little breeze…. not much to see. I did enjoy yesterday’s sunshine, but today it’s gone again. Already we’re at 0.16 inches. When I was wakeful during the night, that’s what finally soothed me to sleep.

102016-flower9Yesterday just got very, very long. I was tired, still, and needed a nap early in the day. Tempus was tired and cranky and what he was doing at the shop took him longer than he figured, so he didn’t get out until 4pm to get some work done in storage. I worked on setting up crystals with headers. By 7:30 I was just wiped, trying to work on one of the Mab’s Creations pamphlets and making far too many mistakes.

We were pretty busy during the day, folks in from around town and the Coast, Portland, 102016-leafBoise and someplace in CA. The weather was gorgeous, but the sunshine went away too early and it was quite dark at 6:30.

I spent awhile setting up the fabric for the sample pincushions in the cube and tetrahedron shapes. Tempus got back 8-ish and got himself something to eat, since I had eaten hours earlier. After that he sat down with his ballot. I got mine done a couple of 102016-raspberrydays back and we got ’em into the drop box after we left the shop about about 10:45.

Tempus managed to get my home computer up on the net again and when I was wakeful I had access to some of that.

Today I have to finish some of the headers and then we have House Capuchin’s Project Day. I have to work on the test run of the pincushion pattern. The shop is open until 6pm!

Of course, this next bit brings up the funny story about what Tempus *didn’t* say…. He should have *asked* me whether all the herbs in the garden are edible before spicing the roast with wormwood…🙂 Yes, that’s years ago now, but I’m not going to let him forget it!

chetwodeThe Rhyne Toll, Chetwode Manor, UK (Oct 30 – Nov 7) – At Chetwode, near Buckingham, England, the Lord of the Manor has the right to levy a yearly tax, called the ‘Rhyne Toll’, on all cattle found between October 30 and November 7 on his ‘liberty’, a grazing domain. Apparently a knight who slew an enormous boar in antiquity was rewarded with this manor and toll. In the 1800’s a mound in the area was unearthed and yielded up the skeleton of an enormous boar. These days, it’s a party, of course! Plant motif reedCeltic Tree Month of Ngetal/Reed  Oct 28 – Nov 24 – nGéadal – (NYEH-dl), reed – The term “reed” is used with great imprecision in North America, but it is clear that the reed of the ogham is the common reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel). This is a giant grass, with stems as high as 4 m (13 feet). It grows in marshy areas, where it often forms dense stands. Like most other grasses, the vertical stems live only a single year, dying in the autumn and being replaced with new green shoots in the spring. The dead stems rattle and whisper in late autumn winds. Common reed has spread as a weed throughout the world; in North America it is widespread in cooler climates. Common reed is in the Grass family (Poaceae, or Gramineae).
arrow celtic tree month reed ngedal“The Reed Month, is said by some to be most favorable for communication with ancestral spirits and the strengthening of all family ties, with magickal associations with fertility, love, protection, and family concerns. ‘Thin and slender is the Reed. He stands in clumps at the edge of the river and between his feet hides the swift pike awaiting an unsuspecting minnow to come his way. In his thinness the reed resembles arrows that fly, silver-tipped, up into the unknown air to land at the very source that one had searched for all these years. Firing arrows off into the unknown is an expression of the desire to search out basic truths. If you loose off without direction, the place of landing will be random. If the firing off is carried out with the correct conviction, determination and sense of purpose, then the act becomes secondary to the event that comes both before and after the moment.'”   Source: Earth, Moon and Sky

Samhain border divSamhain Magick – Poems

Late Autumn by May Sarton

On random wires the rows of summer swallows
Wait for their liftoff.
They will soon be gone
Before All Saints and before All hallows
The changing time when we are most alone.

Disarmed, too vulnerable, full of dread,
And once again as naked as the trees
Before the dark, precarious days ahead
And troubled skies over tumultuous seas.

When we are so transparent to the dead
There is no wall. We hear their voices speak,
And as the small birds wheel off overhead
We bend toward the earth suddenly weak.

How to believe that all will not be lost?
Our flowers, too, not perish in the blight?
Love, leave me your South against the frost.
Say “hush” to my fears, and warm the night.

All Souls’ Night, 1917 by Hortense King Flexner

You heap the logs and try to fill
The little room with words and cheer,
But silent feet are on the hill,
Across the window veiled eyes peer.
The hosts of lovers, young in death,
Go seeking down the world to-night,
Remembering faces, warmth and breath—
And they shall seek till it is light.
Then let the white-flaked logs burn low,
Lest those who drift before the storm
See gladness on our hearth and know
There is no flame can make them warm.

Theme in Yellow by Carl Sandburg

I spot the hills
With yellow balls in autumn
I light the prairie cornfields
Orange and tawny gold clusters
And I am called pumpkins.
On the last of October
When dusk is fallen
Children join hands
And circle round me
Singing ghost songs
And love to the harvest moon;
I am a jack-o’-lantern
With terrible teeth
And the children know I am fooling.

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – Investigating a Homicide

A police detective was investigating a homicide. As he questioned the on-scene officer, he learned the body was that of a young woman.
The body was found with a bowl over her head, covered with milk and a spoon stuck in her back.
The on-scene officer asked what the detective thought had happened to the woman.
The detective responded, “I think it’s obvious. A cereal killer got her!”
