Daily Stuff 1-4-17 Fufluns

Hi, folks!

snow weather motifsnowbear motif winterThere’s white stuff on the ground! Not as much as there was around 4am, because it’s starting to melt, but still some; enough for kids to play in with the schools closed for the day. Wing and windgusts both are in the low teens, although my windchime was making quite a racket, earlier. 30F.

moving cat a_snowcat2Yesterday just whomped along. I was working on the usual Tuesday writing, picture developing computer housekeeping and all. Tempus was up at storage and brought a load of stuff to sort out that’s going to happen today.

motif SnowFlake_1 (2)He took off for the paper route at about 8:30, and not long after that there was an odd sound and the power cut off to all the items on my computer desk! I checked all the usual things, but he took an extra 15 minutes in the middle of the paper run to roll down here to get me up and running again. The power bar blew, as far as we can tell.

snowflake 1The snow started around 1am. I got picked up at 3:50, but the snow was quickly too deep and slippy and we went back to the shop and curled up to snooze at about 4:15. He headed back out around 9:30 and I’m not seeing updates, yet, although he’s in cell phone range if he gets into trouble, so I’m trying not to fret.

…and so this….

moving cat a_snowflakesSo not a lot is going to happen today other than getting the papers delivered and I’ll be writing, although once Tempus wakes back up, I’ll be asking him to do some dishes, at the least. Made by the Beach is closed and I don’t know who else, and a lot of folks are going to open late, it looks like.

fuflunsThe festival of Fufluns is a Roman event that happened somewhere near this day. There’s nothing much written about Fufluns, except that he’s a vegetation god, equivalent to Bacchus, that originally was Etruscan, but here are some references.  http://www.pantheon.org/articles/f/fufluns.html  and here:  http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/roman-mythology.php?deity=FUFLUNS …and on the Etruscans  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etruscan_mythology

Howlsnow2f448de8bf7c6f84cdccb0996cc3cc31The Days of Volos – Procines (January) 1-6 – These moonlit and frosty nights have a name: The Holiday of the Wolves. These days are set aside for the worship of the God of pets and of cattle, whose name is Volos. We give our thanks for the animals on these days, which bring food and sustenance to our homes from ancient times. We also defend them from the ravenous wolves which attack. (Slavic Pagan Calendar)

Astro Constellation PegasusIn early evening at this time of year, the Great Square of Pegasus balances on one corner high in the west. The vast Andromeda-Pegasus constellation complex runs all the way from near the zenith (Andromeda’s foot) down through the Great Square (Pegasus’s body) to fairly low in the west (Pegasus’s nose).
Astro jupiterJupiter (magnitude –2.0, in Virgo) rises around 1 a.m. and shines brightly high the south by early dawn. Spot Spica 5° below it. Jupiter is creamy white, but Spica is icy white with a trace of blue. In a telescope, Jupiter is 35 or 36 arcseconds in diameter, relatively small as Jupiter goes. It’s still far away, heading toward opposition on April 7th.

tree beech birch Celtic Tree Month bethCeltic Tree Month of Beth/Birch, Dec 24 – Jan 20, Beith – (BEH), birch – The silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) is the most common tree birch in much of Europe. It grows up to 30 m (100 feet) high, but is more often found in spreading clumps on sandy soils. It is one of the first trees to colonize an area after a mature forest is cut; this is probably a large part of its symbolic connection with new beginnings. It is cultivated in North America, often under the name of weeping birch. The three trees in my front yard form root sprouts that would take over the bed where they are planted if I didn’t cut them back. The common birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) is almost as widespread as the silver birch, but grows primarily on acid or peaty soils. It can reach 20 m (65 feet) in height. Birches are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae). Curtis Clark
