Hi, folks!

Waves tide

Last Minus Tide of the cycle at 8:23 PM of -0.3 feet.

part sun weather motifAs we crossed the Alsea Bay Bridge the water was like crumpled tin foil and the sky like curdling cream. The sun is thin and strained-looking, but it’s very dry. It’s almost 53F with a spike in the chance of rain tonight, with very little wind, yet. Chances are looking good for interesting weather at the end of the week, though.

motif bird sparrow duskyTempus is getting sicker. He’s where I was on Thursday: wobbly, weak and having trouble standing up, at all. I’m getting better, finally coughing everything up.

motif bird juncoSo, what did we do yesterday? Stay up most of the night trying to sort everything out that’s currently crammed into the shop! Which is why it’s past 4pm and I’m still writing this….

motif bird warblerLots of stuff got dragged into the shop last evening, the last things from the house garage, since storage is completely full. It just needs to get put where it belongs, but currently we can’t get to the “belongs” because of stuff in the way. I told Tempus a few minutes ago, “Let’s start from the bathroom and utility hall and work our way forward or we’re just not going to be able to move *anything*. I can hardly move in the office space as it is and with both of us still sick…. well, it’s a put-one-foot-in-front-of-the-other thing….

motif bird finchWe’ll get this sorted out and get better, I promise!

Could *you* pass a citizenship exam, if you had to? http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/07/what-if-you-had-to-earn-american-citizenship/309398/ …and can you beat my score? I’m shocked that it was so low, actually. “Your Citizenship Score: 64, Citizenship attained, with distinction.” May grandparents would be very ashamed of me.

From one year ago, today. “There’s a chickadee on the seedball pecking busily. He’s actually hanging from the bottom of it, completely upside-down!013016 Chickadee Best pic I could get of him.”

220px-Rhubarb_flowerToday’s Plant is Rhubarb, Rheum rhabarbarum. Best known as “pie plant” or in strawberry and rhubarb jam this is a wonderful and nutritious stalk vegetable, that has been legally counted as a fruit, because of its uses. The roots have been used as a laxative for thousands of years, and the stalks, while strong-tasting when uncooked and with no sugar, are delicious in sauces, pies, jellies, juice and so on, but the leaves are poisonous. It is very easy to grow since the roots will over-winter, 220px-Rhubarb_Pieeven if the stalks die back and it’s one of the earliest vegetables to be harvestable. – Feminine, Venus Earth. – Wear a dried piece to help with stomach or gut pain and general protection. The pie served to a mate helps to maintain fidelity and is an aphrodisiac, especially when combined with strawberries.

saint martina of rome feast 0130Today is the feast day of St Martina of Rome, virgin and martyr, died 228c.e. –  An emperor wanted to marry her. When he took her to Apollo’s temple there was an earthquake that knocked down the statue, which then talked to her. She’s one of the ones that they did everything to, poured hot oil on her, tried to yank her apart with hooks, a lion wouldn’t eat her, etc. They finally cut off her head and instead of blood, milk flowed out. Ew…. Makes you wonder what the fascination with taking people apart is…. More on her here: http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-martina/ More on today’s associated plant, Common Maidenhair, Asplenium trichomanes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asplenium

webvic17_feb04moAll week, Saturn and Antares await you in the south-southeast in early dawn.

013017-astro-webvic17_jan31evThe thin Moon hangs under Venus early this evening, as shown above. Compare their phases; Venus in a telescope is a much thicker crescent than this evening’s Moon.
Astro StarAlgol, the prototype eclipsing binary star, should be at minimum brightness (magnitude 3.4 instead of its usual 2.4) for about two hours centered on 11:04 p.m. EST (8:04 p.m. PST). Algol takes several hours before and after to fade and rebrighten. Info and comparison star chart.
Astro venusVenus is that dazzling white UFO of a thing high in the southwest during twilight and long after. It’s currently magnitude –4.7 or –4.8, entering its time of peak brightness. Just to its upper left is tiny orange Mars, now only 0.5% as bright. In a telescope Venus is slightly less than half sunlit. It’s growing larger as it approaches us and is now about 30 arcseconds from cusp to cusp. For the rest of the winter, Venus will continue to enlarge as its phase wanes down to a thin crescent. Venus in a telescope is least glary when viewed in bright twilight. So get your scope on it as soon as you can see it naked-eye, perhaps before sunset.

Prayer for a Tenspeed Heart

Let the fire of my body
propel and warm me
and let each darkness
reveal its plenitude.

Let the hills
flatten under my wheels
and let the eloquent curves
yield up their good surprise.

Let my heart be obstinate
when I need to climb
and let my lowliest gears
restrain my spinning down.

Let there be flatland, too,
and into that glittering place
let me stretch with the heart of a lover,
at full speed, blind and intent. ~ Barbara Hendryson ~ (Cries of the Spirit, edited by Marilyn Sewell)

Imbolc Magick – Poems

A Candlemas Poem —from Casting the Circle by Diane Stein

Night of lit white candles
Darkness turned into light
Everything she touches changes
Feast of waxing flame
Fire of heart and hearth
Fire on the mind
Flickering of spark
Quickening of air
Warming into inspiration
Thawing in her innocence
Snow into desire
He shines for all of us
She burns within us all
Spiral heat of life
She shines for all of us
Within us all she burns
The fires to create
She shines in all of us
She burns us all within
Awakening arising is her need
She shines for all of us
She burns within us all
Her candle is our only source

I am the womb
~                   of every hope
I am the fire
~                   of every season
I am the queen
~                   of every hive
I am the womb
~                   of every life.
I am a drop
~                   of morning dew
I am a star
~                   in the evening sky
I am the light

Ceremony for Candlemas Eve

Down with the Rosemary and Bayes
Down with the Mistletoe
Instead of Holly, now upraise
The greener Box (for Show).

The Holly hitherto did sway
Let Box now domineer;
Until the dancing Easter-day
Or Easter’s Eve appear. ~Robert Herrick (1591-1674)
