Minus Tide at 7:46 PM of -0.5 feet.
Bright blue sky and sunshine! It’s nice to see some for a few days. It looks like this might last until Tuesday. There were white puffies over the Coast Range, some looking to come from what was steaming up from the foothills and just a few over the ocean, but none above. The water in the bay and out to sea was blue, too. No whitecaps today.
Yesterday went by all too fast. Tempus needed to nap, but he also had to deliver the paper that the floodwater prevented him from doing the night before. He spent a lot of the rest of the day napping. We did have some customers, not a lot, but it’s February. Late in the day we got the work table cleared so I could have class this morning, but no one has shown up.
I’m heading into the back as soon as this is done, to do some of those chores, mostly straining the calendula and plantain ointments and getting those into containers. I have a beef stew to set up to cook for a late supper and things to pull out and sort. Sewing is going to be just hand-work again today and then we have to drive out to Toledo to set up for the House Capuchin feast. Going to be a long day…
Ken Gagne of the Alsea River, day before yesterday.
Today’s Plant is the Blueberry, Vaccinium Cyanococcus (many species/varieties)! This is a fruiting bush that is related to cranberries, huckleberries and bilberries, has many species within the genus and many varieties within the species. Many fruits are called blueberries, when they’re not Vaccinium. Widely cultivated across the world, the fruit is high in iron and lot of micronutrients and even has resveratrol like red grapes. It may have effects on brain health, reducing stroke damage in experimental animals and memory retention in the aged. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blueberry – Put blueberries under the doormat to keep people you don’t want out of the house or plant them along the property line or next to the front walk to keep them entirely off your property. Blossoms can be dried and carried in an amulet, or wear fresh ones in your hair for protection from negative psychic energy near you. Eat blueberries and/or make blueberry pie or tea or jam to get the protection from psychic attack inside you, especially if the effects are leading to headaches and fatigue.
Today is the anniversary of the date in 1858 when Bernadette Soubirous first saw an apparition of the Goddess, appearing as the Virgin Mary, in the grotto of Lourdes, which has been a shire of Kore/Persephone for a long, long while. More here: http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/book/feb11.html and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Lourdes I learned a new word today, “mantic”. It means related to divination or prophecy. The spring at Lourdes was described as “mantic” in the article.http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mantic

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Affirmation/Thought for the Day – I act with balance in my heart. I speak with balance on my lips. I walk with balance in my feet.

eugene debs said he would not
lead you into paradise if he could,
because if he could lead you in,
someone else could lead you out, that
was the text you ought to have
listened to, that was the text you
ought to have believed, instead you
bought a world free for democracy
and you bought a return to normalcy,
and you bought a new deal, and four
freedoms (freedoms you might only
have, anyhow, if you look deep inside
yourself where all freedom is to be
found, and not with rockwell hands so
carefully and badly drawn . . .and then
america they will be unnumbered for you, america)
america yes the square deal and the
new frontier … – Joel Oppenheimer, excerpt, ’17-18 April, 1961′, from Walter Lowenfels, Poets of Today: A New American Anthology. Eugene V(ictor) Debs (November 5, 1855 – October 20, 1926), was a prominent American socialist politician, presidential candidate and peace activist.
We don’t usually make our own Valentines anymore, which is kinda sad. I have some good memories of getting covered with paste and glitter and giving my family sticky hugs that kinda spread the wealth, but they loved and cherished those silly little messy things that I made. I have some that my kids made for me, ditto. …and any excuse for a party, right?
Drinkables – Red punch, pomegranate juice in lemon-lime soda is wonderful, especially of you can float some raspberry sherbert in it, or frozen strawberries. For low-sugar use clear glasses with water. Put a lemon wheel in and then and float frozen strawberries or raspberries on top. I ‘spose red ginger ale or some other red soda would work if you’re pressed for time.
Foods – Well, cookies and cupcakes are kinda expected and maybe some chocolates. If you feel adventurous you might try something that we call the Bartlett Bowl. It’s a can of mandarin oranges, whole roasted hazelnuts, chocolate chips and shredded coconut all mixed together. Just before serving, pour in the juice from the mandarins. This one has the traditional “love” correspondences, too.
Crafts stuff – Minimums are glue/gluesticks, red & white construction paper and scissors. Next step would be heart-shaped doilies, glitter, sequins, yarn, pompoms, macaroni. Macaroni? Yup, my favorites are bows and making scalloped edges out of elbow macaroni. How about traditional Valentine’s candies, like Red-Hots and Conversation Hearts? Next step after that would be stickers, googlie eyes, red silk flowers that can be taken apart and then you can go on from there! The more “stuff” that you throw on the table, the more creative the valentines will be.
Get envelopes/boxes – Ya gotta have these to present the creations…and trust me, kids do 3D! Adults tend to do the flatter pieces…. The PO has flat rate boxes for mailing that are free…unless you do have to drop ‘em into the mail.
You know how to do this! Eat some candies, pick up the scissors and the glitter and play!
Put the craft stuff and the food/drink in two separate rooms, or at least on two separate tables.
Put something washable on the table you’ll be doing the crafts part on. Old sheets are great.
If you’re doing this with kids under the age of 7 or 8, either put them & supplies on an old shower curtain on the floor, or put the table on top of washable sheets/old towels, so you don’t end up with more of a mess than you can help.
Silliness – Late Night Funny – President Obama gave his farewell address tonight in Chicago and thousands of people waited outside in freezing temperatures to get tickets. Now those people have a week to get over their pneumonia before they lose their health insurance. Jimmy Fallon
