It’s nice out at the moment, dry and warm but, High Wind Warning, Gale Warning, Storm Watch is what’s on the menu starting tonight! We’re really clouded over, but it’s still bright and very little wind, even on the beaches.
Yesterday went pretty well. We didn’t have but a customer or two during the day, but my student from Medford, Sadb, was here in the early part of the day and we were going over her stuff and what she needs to be working on.
The Moon was still bright and clear last night. I didn’t need my flashlight going down the path to the apartment. I stood and looked at Her and the stars while I waited for Tempus to come down from the car.
Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium), which grows mostly at low to middle elevations in soil enriched by decaying wood and on rotten logs, all over the coast range. It is a deciduous shrub growing to 13 ft tall with a small, edible red to blue-black berry. The local peoples ate, dried, stewed and made sauces from this berry which was one of their staple foods. The bark is a cold remedy. The leaves make a good tea. I make jam of the berries, which also make a tasty tea. Both berries and leaves are good for sore throats, aching teeth and inflamed gums. It’s sometimes used as an ornamental, but it doesn’t take well to getting the roots disturbed. Gender, Feminine – Planet, Venus – Element, Water – Carry for luck, health (especially teeth/throat), to keep away evil and break hexes, Burn to make dreams come true. Dried berries can be used for prosperity magicks. More info and links here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_parvifolium
Today’s Feast, Juno Februata, may be a mangled re-telling of the Lupercalia Feast that we’re going to talk about tomorrow. This goddess was of the home, hearth and married women and has a name that may be a borrowed word from another language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_Februa Some interesting stuff about Juno’s tree: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficus_Ruminalis and more about figs in general: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficus

The Moon rises with Jupiter late on the nights of February 14th and 15th. By dawn the following mornings, they’re on display high in the southwest. The Moon rises around 9 p.m., with <<< Jupiter following up below it 30 or 40 minutes later. Then only 10 or 15 minutes later, fainter Spica >>> follows Jupiter (look to Jupiter’s lower right). By dawn on the 15th the trio has moved over to the high southwest, as shown here.
Mars (magnitude +1.2) is the faint “star” upper left of Venus. They’re 6° to 7° apart this week, starting to widen. In a telescope Mars is just a tiny fuzzblob 5 arcseconds wide.

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Affirmation/Thought for the Day – Only YOU can stop YOU!
CHOCOLATE HEARTS FOR BREAKFAST
My breakfast was leftover chocolate hearts today.
I told myself when I got the chocolates that
I would not binge out on them for once.
Omigod, was I LYING to myself!
Chocolates call to me, where my willpower is…
Well, how in the hell would I know?
I don’t have any!
Sometimes, Valentines’s Day is a ‘slippery place’
The chocolates just call to me, and then they
Pile up on my waistline and collect there.
Why did you give me chocolates in the first place?
That can’t be love…do you WANT me to stay fat?
You talk about how far you can run…
Do you want me to to brag how far I can waddle?
I felt so down in the dumps. You sent chocolates,
But why didn’t you bring them yourself?
Talk about absentee caring…or lack thereof…
Instead of coming and giving me love, kisses, sex,
You sent me chocolates that just make me FAT.
What’s the matter with you, anyway?
Have you ever heard of the word passive-aggressive?
What a jerk.
The days when I would be pathetically pleased
That you even acknowledged that I was on the
Same planet, have just disintegrated.
As far as I am concerned YOU have disintegrated!
At least the chocolate made me feel loved,
I can’t say the same thing for you and your card.
The cute neighbor across the hall is bringing margaritas,
Heck, maybe I can get some action here….
Well, we are now sharing your chocolates
For our breakfast, thoughtful of you to send them.
Don’t bother to send any next year, though.
I think maybe my neighbor would bring some, as well
As himself, and I much prefer a hands-on Valentine.
This is to let you know that your valentine chocolates
Were eaten, so they weren’t wasted at all…
Have a nice day, wherever you are! Toodles. – © Copyright 2/16/06, Beth Johnson (Mystic Amazon)

Valentines Heart Cookies – Decorating – Cookie – Holiday – Valentines
- Icing (fluffy buttercream or commercial work best)
- Batch of 3” sugar, shortbread, butter or lebkuchen cookies (see note)
- Red shoestring licorice
- Optional – Red hots, valentine nonpareils, silver ball decors, conversation hearts or red decorators sugar
- Tools – icing spatula, scissors, small spoon, bowl to contain decors when they run away
- Ice face of cookie.
- Cut two pieces of licorice about 3 ½ inches long.
- Place them on the cookie in a heart shape.
- If you’re going to use the other decorations, conversation hearts can be pressed into the center of the heart, (3 make a good display) or you can use the spoon to pour sugar or other candies into one “lobe” of the heart, or even to fill the entire center.
Note – The important part of this is that the cookies be at least 3” across, else the licorice will tend to spring loose.
