To the north the sky is a blank grey white, but over town and the Coast Range it’s long rolls of lumpy grey cloud. It’s dry, but windier than it’s been. Down by the water it’s hitting 20mph, but here in town, 12mph, but variable. 48F and I’m very sleepy.
Yesterday went nuts for awhile. We had people in steadily until 4pm, one of whom was Marcia Beth, who is going to be moving to Indiana to be near family. Others were folks who are in and out of the shop and a couple of new people, one of who just moved to the area. Welcome to Waldport!
The big weirdie of the day was that Sash has been dealing with a toothache and it turned into a raging infection, so I pulled the Mom card, told him that he was going to the ER, and sent Tempus up there to make sure that he did! It took the whole afternoon to get seen, but he got a shot in the tail and a couple of prescriptions and then Tempus took him home to get some rest.
Tempus decided not to come back to the shop, since it was already that late, so I made myself some supper and got to work on some embroidery. Stella and Amy showed up for sewing, so we had a good time. Tempus called repeatedly from Freddies as he was doing the shopping, since a bunch of stuff was on sale that we didn’t expect. He drove to the newspaper office and curled up for a nap. I did that for awhile, too, and then caught up on mail.
Today’s plant is Garlic, Allium sativum. This is one of those wonderful herbs in cooking. Not only is it magically cleansing, it’s marvelously tasty even in small amounts. A good cook will add it and you’ll notice, not the garlic flavor, but only that the dish tastes great!
Masculine, Earth, Mars, Hecate – Magickal uses include healing, protection, exorcism, chasing vampires (both actual and psychic), and purification of spaces and objects. Guards against negative magic, spirits, and the envy of others. Hang in the home to bring togetherness to the family. Hang by bed or desk to keep your willpower strong. Wards off bad weather when worn or carried during outside activities (without throwing off natural cycles!) Absorbs diseases — rub fresh, peeled garlic against ailing body parts then throw the garlic into running water.
Day of Remembrance for Prince Igor – Suhii (March) 3 – This pagan prince struck fear in the heart of Byzantine Christianity by attacking its capitol, Constantinople. During this time, Igor enlisted the help of many vikings who helped him rule his kingdom and fight against his enemies. Prince Igor was killed by the Drevlani when he attempted to secure fees for rent from them when they were on the lands of his kingdom (Drevlane (Drevlani), Krivichi, Vjatichi, Deregovichi: North Slavic tribes)
Aegir is from the Norse pantheon. “Older than the giants”, he is a god of the sea, known for great parties, especially with ale brewed in a cauldron that has its own saga. He is brother to fire and wind and married to the Sea Goddess Ran. Between them they have 9 daughters who are the different types of waves. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aegir

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion/Ash, Feb 18 – Mar 17, Nion (NEE-uhn), ash – the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The garden is ornamented with Fall’s sparse remains.
Sere and brown, they trace their shadows
Upon the sprinkle of white that drifts upon them.
As maiden turns to matron, Winter gardens sleep.
Spring will return in the next act. For now,
Persephone sleeps warm and cozy in Hades’ bed.

Once upon a time there was a little rabbit who loved Layla, the Spring Maiden who brings the flowers and new grass.
She was only a little bunny, not very smart, not very strong, not very pretty, but soft and sweet and very, very loving.
She wanted to do something nice for Layla to show how much she loved Her.
She thought and thought and finally thought about eggs. Eggs are round like the world. That is a good thing for Layla!
Now birds are the ones who lay eggs, and eggs are usually white or brown, but this little rabbit didn’t know that. She laid a whole nest full of eggs for a gift to Layla and for the great earth mother, Lada.
They were bright colors, like flowers and had pretty pictures to show how much the bunny liked the world in springtime.
This sweet little rabbit took her eggs, put them in a basket with flowers and delicious spring herbs. She brought them to Layla and her mother, saying, “I know they’re not much of a gift, but I thought you might like them.”
Layla told the little rabbit, “Bunny dear, your sweetness and your love have created a miracle!”
Layla was so happy with the eggs that she gave the little rabbit the power to share those eggs with the whole world. Lada even put the bunny’s picture on the moon so that we would not forget the love that made the impossible happen.
Ever since that time we take eggs and paint or dye them in bright colors and eat candies and pastries shaped like eggs and remember the sweet little rabbit that we call the Easter Bunny.
