Rain is bucketing down and it’s rather dark. There’s been most of 1/3 of an inch since midnight. It’s actually windier than it’s been. Not so much right here, but the KOA is reporting winds in the teens and it’s more on the beaches. Not awful, but enough to make the wind chime sound steadily.
Yesterday was kinda rough. I was so very tired all day, but other than dozing off at my desk I made it through to 6:30pm, when I closed up and took a nap. I didn’t accomplish a lot, though. We did have some folks in shopping, everyone exclaiming about how lovely the weather had turned.
I forgot to tell you yesterday about the tail end of the paper route. It was already daylight as we rolled out Bayview road and it *really* is a lovely view! I’m not sure I’ve been out that way in daylight but once, back when Grandma was still alive. There’s water almost the whole way to that last drop and on the way back I saw that the low land on the far side of the road from the Backbay *is* all wet right now. It looks like it’s low meadow that dries out in the summer. On the way in there was a spot where a bunch of elk were grouped all together and grazing right along the road. On the way back about 20 of them were up on the road trying to decide which way to head. Seeing the car, they started moving up the road away from us, funny light-colored behinds flashing in the early light, contrasting with their darker hides. Finally they found a spot off to the other side and a sudden river of them poured down the slope, hopping over the fence as they went and headed out across the meadow.
It doesn’t look like anyone’s here for Herbs this morning. Not surprised with the weather…. I have someone coming in for a make-up 101 class, Sewing at 3pm and then a pre-nup down at the end of the day. Between, I need to make some more headway on getting things sorted out! We’ve had pie and cocoa for breakfast and Tempus is going to make a pot of coffee.
Today’s plant is Wild ginger, Asarum caudatum – This is a different plant from the one usually used in magick, but has only slightly different properties. This is related to black pepper, kava and birthwort. – Masculine, Mars, Fire – This is used for “heating up” spells. An early ecologist, he traveled with a tin pot on his head for a hat. The First Nations tribes, even the hostile ones, revered him. As the Moon waxes toward full (on the 12th), it shines under Leo. The Moon is equally full this evening and tomorrow evening, as seen from the longitude of the Americas. That’s because the exact time of full Moon, 10:54 a.m. March 12th EDT, lands halfway between the two evenings. This evening the Moon shines by the dim hind leg of Leo (too dim to be plotted above). Tomorrow evening it’s by the dim head of Virgo.
The Big Dipper glitters high in the northeast these evenings, standing on its handle. You probably know that the two stars forming the front of the Dipper’s bowl (currently on top) are the Pointers; they point to Polaris, currently to their left. And, you may know that if you follow the curve of the Dipper’s handle out and around by a little more than a Dipper length, you’ll arc to Arcturus, now rising in the east. But did you know that if you follow the Pointers backward the opposite way, you’ll land in Leo? Draw a line diagonally across the Dipper’s bowl from where the handle is attached, continue far on, and you’ll go to Gemini. And look at the two stars forming the open top of the Dipper’s bowl. Follow this line past the bowl’s lip far across the sky, and you crash into Capella.

Mercury is begins to emerge low in the afterglow of sunset at the end of this week. By March 17th, use binoculars about 20 minutes after sunset to look for it about 10° lower left of much brighter Venus.

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion/Ash, Feb 18 – Mar 17, Nion (NEE-uhn), ash – the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).
