First Minus Tide of the cycle at 8:21 AM of -0.3 feet.
It’s damp, but not currently raining unless you’re standing under a tree. 🙂 50F and just breezy in town, although it was interesting on the bridge and at home the trees we waving pretty wildly. Down on the beaches it’s running in the upper teens. The clouds are at 600 feet but it’s fairly bright. According to Wunderground we’ve gotten 1 1/3 inches of rain since midnight. Wow!
Yesterday started way late at the shop, and after chores we were pretty tired. I decided to try to get the newsletters together and then Tempus had a stack of paperwork, so we never got to the boxes. He finished it just in time to make some supper and run out the door! I had been working on photos. I’m trying to get the flower pix from the last year into some kind of order and that’s a *lot* of pictures!
He picked me up at 1:15. There are some route changes, but he also got going at about 10:45, which is a bit early. The wind was really picking up, startlingly so in Bayshore and coming back over the bridge. I may not do quite so much of the route again, though, since I ended up with a nasty case of car buns!
It was mostly not raining, during the route, just a couple times where it was misting, but the wind blew that *right* into the car. We did see some wildlife, mostly cats and a chipmunk (what was it doing out at night?) but Anja saw a deer standing in a wooded driveway right off 101 and what might have been a badger, since it was far too big for a skunk, but had the white stripe.
Today’s Plant is Bleeding Heart, lamprocapnos spectabilis (which Cunningham has as dicentra spectabilis, an older designation). Other names are: old-fashioned bleeding-heart, Venus’s car, Lady in a bath, Dutchman’s trousers, or Lyre-flower, which all have various folklore attached.
They’re native to Asia, but are common garden ornamentals and so suited to our climate that I assumed that they were native here! You see them all through the woods at this time of year. – Feminine, Venus, Water – Used in magick mostly as a divination. Crush the flower. If it “bleeds red” there is love. If it “bleeds white”, either love has died, or there is no hope of it. Be careful if you bring the live plant indoors because it can produce irritation and anger between people in the household. To forestall this push a silver bead or a dime (standing in for silver) into the soil, and say, “Lady of the Moon, give us peace, in your honor, and we honor you!”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamprocapnos_spectabilis
If she (Ishtar) will not grant thee her release,
To Tammuz, the lover of her youth,
Pour out pure waters, pour out fine oil;
With a festival garment deck him that he may play on the flute of lapis lazuli,
That the votaries may cheer his liver. [his spirit]
Belili [sister of Tammuz] had gathered the treasure,
With precious stones filled her bosom.
When Belili heard the lament of her brother, she dropped her treasure,
She scattered the precious stones before her,
“Oh, my only brother, do not let me perish!
On the day when Tammuz plays for me on the flute of lapis lazuli, playing it for me with theporphyry ring.
Together with him, play ye for me, ye weepers and lamenting women!
That the dead may rise up and inhale the incense.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar

The waxing crescent Moon steps nightly past Mercury, Mars, Aldebaran and the Pleiades. (These scenes are drawn exact for the middle of North America.) As twilight deepens, spot the thin crescent Moon low in the west. Right or lower right of it shines Mercury. Look about 10° above the Moon for Mars, currently about as puny as it gets at only magnitude +1.5. See the illustration above.
Venus as a razor thin crescent on March 21st, imaged by Shahrin Ahmad in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There’s just a hint of cusp extensions on both ends of the crescent. The planet was 1.8% illuminated at the time.
Venus (magnitude –4.2) passed through inferior conjunction with the Sun on March 25th, but it does so at its maximum possible separation of 8° north of the Sun. Can you find Venus at both dusk and dawn on the same day, or across the same night? Your chance is ending! See the March Sky & Telescope, page 46, or online, See an Ultra-Thin Crescent.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

Shoveling Snow With Buddha
In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wok
you would never see him doing such a thing,
tossing the dry snow over a mountain
of his bare, round shoulder,
his hair tied in a knot,
a model of concentration.
Sitting is more his speed, if that is the word
for what he does, or does not do.
Even the season is wrong for him.
In all his manifestations, is it not warm or slightly humid?
Is this not implied by his serene expression,
that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe?
But here we are, working our way down the driveway,
one shovelful at a time.
We toss the light powder into the clear air.
We feel the cold mist on our faces.
And with every heave we disappear
and become lost to each other
in these sudden clouds of our own making,
these fountain-bursts of snow.
This is so much better than a sermon in church,
I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling.
This is the true religion, the religion of snow,
and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,
I say, but he is too busy to hear me.
He has thrown himself into shoveling snow
as if it were the purpose of existence,
as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear driveway
you could back the car down easily
and drive off into the vanities of the world
with a broken heater fan and a song on the radio.
All morning long we work side by side,
me with my commentary
and he inside his generous pocket of silence,
until the hour is nearly noon
and the snow is piled high all around us;
then, I hear him speak.
After this, he asks,
can we go inside and play cards?
Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milk
and bring cups of hot chocolate to the table
while you shuffle the deck.
and our boots stand dripping by the door.
Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyes
and leaning for a moment on his shovel
before he drives the thin blade again
deep into the glittering white snow. – Billy Collins (Picnic, Lightning)
Symptoms of Inner Peace are:
- The tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than from fears based on past experiences.
- The unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
- Loss of interest in judging other people.
- Loss of interest in judging Self.
- Loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
- Loss of interest in the actions of others.
- Loss of interest in conflict.
- Loss of ability to worry (this is a very serious symptom.)
- Frequent overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
- Continued feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
- Frequent attacks of smiling.
- Increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
- Increased susceptibility to the love extended by other as well as an uncontrollable urge to extend it.Claire writes, “be on the lookout for symptoms of inner peace. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to inner peace and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat in what has been, up to now, a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.”
Silliness – Ways To Stay Stressed
Are you worried now about how to stay stressed? You’ll have no trouble if you practice the following clinically proven methods:
NEVER EXERCISE. Exercise wastes a lot of time that could be spent worrying.
EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. Hey, if cigarette smoke can’t cleanse your system, a balanced diet isn’t likely to.
GAIN WEIGHT. Work hard at staying at least 25 pounds over your recommended weight.
TAKE PLENTY OF STIMULANTS. The old standards of caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and cola will continue to do the job just fine.
