The sky is covered with an ombre pink/gold/grey/blue with strips of grey and white roving below it. It’s really chilly. 42F? There are some wind gusts getting up to around 10mph and down on the beaches the wind is in the teens. We got 1/10 of an inch of rain yesterday and it’s supposed to be back mid-afternoon, but at the moment, it’s dry.
Yesterday everything just took far too long. I was just ditzing by early afternoon, although I got various small chores done waiting for Tempus to finish in back. It’s a good thing no one showed for Herbs because we had no space to work until nearly 5pm!
We had a bunch of customers in, nothing like last week, though. Canterbury Candles re-stocked us, so we have some nice blue candles again. Kristie stopped by to say, “Hi!” and to show off her Eclipse shirt. Chocolate Frog is stocking those!
Late in the day the table was finally clear, so I got the mustard made. Tempus had to go out to get vinegar for me to finish it, though. While he was doing that I processed the pictures that I had been taking.
We went home around 10pm after having burgers for supper and went to bed very soon after that. We’re back here at 9am because we have a bunch of cooking and baking to do today and I’m going to set up here and have him take things back home to use Jeanne’s oven.
Today is House Capuchin potluck and Project Day. I doubt we’ll have any Wicca students this morning, so I’m not going to worry about it, just start right in on the other stuff. Yes, the shop will be open normal hours today, it’s just there will be folks in weird outfits running around.
Today’s plant is New Zealand Flax, Phormium Tenax. This is a very different plant from common flax or linseed, Linum usitatissimum. It is used mostly as an ornamental in the northern hemisphere, but at one time sustained a lively trade as a fiber. While the two plants are very different, they have similar magickal properties. These days the fiber is mostly used by paper artisans. – Masculine, Mercury, Fire, Hulda – Money spells, add to coins and carry, flax in the shoe averts poverty. For protection while asleep, add to mustard seed, put both opposite cold water. Protection from evil entering, scatter with red pepper by door. Health and healing rituals, sprinkle altar with flaxseed. More here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phormium For the traditional uses of the plant fiber http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_flax
Matsu, Mazu, or A-Ma, is the patron of fishermen and sailors. One of those odd little stories that come out of the Orient, she is worshiped all over Asia, either as a deified human or as an incarnation of Kuan Yin. She was born Lin Moniang in about 960CE. There are a lot of legends about her standing on the shore in all weathers wearing red to help the fishermen make it back to shore and about going into a trance to save her father and brothers, but she because the protector of many of the Asian peoples. Today is her feast in the Portuguese section of Macao. A-Ma, means “grandmother”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-Ma#Person

Love & Light,
Today’s Astro & Calendar
Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 4/10 at 11:08pm. Waxing Gibbous Moon – From seven to fourteen days after the new moon. For spells that need concentrated work over a ¼ moon cycle this is the best time for constructive workings. Aim to do the last working on the day of the Full moon, before the turn. Keywords for the Gibbous phase are: analyze, prepare, trust. It is the time in a cycle to process the results of the actions taken during the First Quarter. During this phase you are gathering information. Give up making judgments; it will only lead to worry. Your knowledge is incomplete. Laugh. Analyze and filter. LOOK WITHIN. God/dess aspect: Maiden/Youth, but in the uncommitted phase, the Warriors – Associated God/desses: Dion, Dionysius, Venus, Thor. Phase ends at the Full on 4/9 at 11:08pm. Full Moon – The day of the day before and day after the true Full Moon. “And better it be when the moon is full!”! Prime time for rituals for prophecy, for spells to come to fruition, infusing health and wholeness, etc. A good time for invoking deity. FRUITION Manifesting goals, nurturing, passion, healing, strength, power. Workings on this day are for protection, divination. “extra power”, job hunting, healing serious conditions Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. God/dess Aspect: Mother/Abundance/Kingship – – Associated God/desses: Danu, Cerridwen, Gaia, Aphrodite, Isis, Jupiter, Amon-Ra. Phase ends on 4/12 at 11:08pm.
THREE comets are now in range of good binoculars. Comets 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak, C/2017 E4 Lovejoy, and C/2015 ER61 PanSTARRS are all glowing at about 6th or 7th magnitude, lovely green in deep images. See Bob King’s article Comet PanSTARRS in Outburst and Binocular Bright. (For Comet 41P use the chart here; the one in the May Sky & Telescope is somewhat off.)
The Moon, now moving across Virgo, pairs up with Jupiter on the night that the Moon is full.
Right after dark, Orion is still well up in the west-southwest in his spring orientation: striding down to the right, with his belt horizontal. The belt points left toward Sirius and right toward Aldebaran and, farther on, the Pleiades.
Mercury is coming down and fading out from its best evening apparition of the year. On Friday the 7th, look for it low in the west about 50 minutes after sunset, 16° lower left of Mars. Mercury fades this week from magnitude 1.3 to 4.0 while sinking lower.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

And garnished with garlonds goodly dight
Of all the fairest flowres and freshest buds

The element of spontaneity
An element of obvious destruction
And not so obvious creation
An element of passion
An element of sensual love
An element of heat
The ability to cook food
The ability to survive
The ability to travel great distances-
Even to the Moon-
Our Symbol of the Goddess we love so dearly.
The element of nuclear reaction
The element of fission
The element of fusion
That which creates our Sun
Our Symbol of the God we hold so dear
Our symbol of vitality we so revere
The spontaneous combustion
It cannot be,
For it entrances those both young and old.
Fire is all of I have listed above, and so much more! It is the element that is arguably more unique than any other, for it is not as tangible as the other three… Earth, Water, and Air can easily be seen as the three states of matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas. So then, they are all around us. Where is Fire then?
In the Old Times, people did not possess knowledge of molecules, atoms, and the substances that we call elements today. They knew of no Protons, Neutrons, or Electrons. They would pick up a piece of wood, and show that the elements were present. By adding heat, they would reveal it’s true nature… When it burns, you can clearly see that wood contains Fire, and Air from the escaping smoke. It was solid (or Earth) to begin with. Thus wood is made of Earth, some Fire, and a pinch of Air. This reasoning was used for everything.
Now, in the modern day, we know that fire is a much more complex chemical reaction due to friction and the speed of traveling particles… So why do we, as a Pagan community view Elements the way we do? The idea of worshipping gods and goddesses, and recognizing four elements instead of one god must (and does) seem like quite the step backwards to those not in our community, so why do we even recognize the elements anymore?
For me, the truth of the matter is this: do you use the elements that scientists have discovered on a daily basis? Unless you’re a scientist or student, you probably could care less if your salt you’re using in a salt-water purification is Sodium-Chloride! It’s easier to say, “Thou art the salt of the Earth”. You probably don’t care that each Water molecule contains two Hydrogen atoms, and one Oxygen atom… It’s simple enough to say it’s Water, for that is all we need to communicate with our subconscious. Some call the subconscious the Younger Self… Think about it. It keeps secrets. It won’t always listen. It communicates only through Art, and Divinity… Sure sounds like a Younger version of us all to me!
Our Younger Self is reached through very simple, childlike actions and movements. This is why we hear “Burn a green candle for money.”, and other generalizations. This is obviously the basis for spellcraft, one of our religions Sciences.
So, this is how for us as modern Pagans, we can see Fire as an element, along with Earth, Air, and Water. Most Wiccans believe in the All, the living Universe, which includes many planes, some physical, and some not physical, but spiritual.
The God and The Goddess are personifications of two ever present forces in Nature. There are many names for both, to personify many the aspects of each half of the All. The best way for a non-Pagan to view the All, our Fifth Element, Spirit, is just that: the basic idea is like that of the Christian Holy Spirit. (This is quite a generic description, and the most similar thing I could come up with. So, before you click that E-Mail address, try to think of something better to describe it as to a non-Pagan, eh?)
We view the Universe as not an external being watching over us, but as a being that is the Universe: and we are cells of that living vessel. Not only is the All signified by simplifying it by using God and Goddess figures that have been around for centuries, but we also simplify it even more by classifying things by each of the four elements. Each path has it’s own system of correspondences.
In my tradition, the Athame corresponds with Air, the Pentacle with Earth, the Chalice with Water, and the Wand with Fire. Many traditions have the Wand representing Air and the Athame Fire, but there is never only one way to do something. If you don’t do what feels right for you, there is almost no way you could practice this religion happily. I am not listing the correspondences here that I use for the directions, because I change those depending on where I am, which changes often.
Fire invigorates us and keeps us alive. It is there unseen in our automobile engines, and it is behind the electricity that powers all we do. Although Fire isn’t in all objects as early scientists believed it was; it is there in the form of electrons orbiting the protons and neutrons that make up all that we know of. I also believe in a place smaller that a proton, smaller than a quark. I believe it is a place where matter and spirit meet, allowing us to affect the world with our thoughts alone.
All of us have that red headed spunk, that Fire in our hearts somewhere. We are all a bit spontaneous, and some of us just seem to glow! Fire is a part of you and me. Fire allows us to survive. Fire is a useful tool, as well as a good ally and friend.
