The sun keeps trying to shine, but the sky is about 2/3 cloud, so it keeps getting blocked out. 64F and 65% humidity. It’s fine if you’re where there’s a breeze, otherwise it feels sticky. The wind is at 6mph in town, enough to wave leaves and flutter the petunias in the fairy garden, and not much more on the beaches.
Yesterday went pretty quickly. There was a lot to do so we just kept plugging at one task after another. I did get a jumble page finished, so next is to get the notice up about it. I did some work on newsletter files, filling in the quotes file at least through this next week. I got a little done on herbs, getting a parsley re-potted and starting to go through the bags. Most of it is going on the compost heap, honestly. It’s been sitting too long.
Tempus picked me up just after 2, really early last night and it was dark all through the run, ending in twilight. We went to sleep right away, so we managed to get going on chores by noon, getting to the shop by 2. That doesn’t usually happen!
We moved a lot of plant buckets this morning. The tomatoes are going to need stakes, so I have to get those found today. I also pulled out some of the small plants that need to be re-potted and those will happen during the week. A lot more of the plants have been shifted to where they’ll get more sun, too. …but we have to water tonight. Things are drying out fast! We have some chores to do here at the shop, too, and we’ll get those done and head back to finish on the others.
Today’s feast is to Hemera, the Greek goddess/personification of Day, whose birth was celebrated around this time. Hemera is one of the primordial deities, being Uranus’ mother or grandmother. She is the child of Chaos or of Night & Darkness (depending on who you listen to and sister of Aether, the personification of Light. Don’t forget that today is also the anniversary of Stewart Farrar’s birth!
Today’s Plant is the Blueberry, Vaccinium Cyanococcus (many species/varieties)! This is a fruiting bush that is related to cranberries, huckleberries and bilberries, has many species within the genus and many varieties within the species. Many fruits are called blueberries, when they’re not Vaccinium. Widely cultivated across the world, the fruit is high in iron and lot of micronutrients and even has resveratrol like red grapes. It may have effects on brain health, reducing stroke
damage in experimental animals and memory retention in the aged. Blossoms can be dried and carried in an amulet, or wear fresh ones in your hair for protection from negative psychic energy near you. Eat blueberries and/or make blueberry pie or tea or jam to get the protection from psychic attack inside you, especially if the effects are leading to headaches and fatigue. Celtic Tree Month of Duir/Oak, Jun 10 – Jul 7 – The oak of myth and legend is the common oak (Quercus robur L.). It is sometimes called the great oak, which is a translation of its Latin name (robur is the root of the English word “robust”). It grows with ash and beech in the lowland forests, and can reach a height of 150 feet and age of 800 years. Along with ashes, oaks were heavily logged throughout recent millennia, so that the remaining giant oaks in many parts of Europe are but a remnant of forests past. Like most other central and northern European trees, common oaks are deciduous, losing their leaves before Samhain and growing new leaves in the spring so that the trees are fully clothed by Bealltaine. PASTRAMI-DILL BITES ~ Low Carb!
- 3 dill pickle spears, about 5 inches long (2 5/8 ounces)
- 5 ounces pastrami, sliced very thin *
- Boursin (see recipe below)
Cut each pickle spear lengthwise into 3 strips. Pat them dry with paper towels. Pat the pastrami dry. Stack 2 slices of pastrami to make 9 stacks. You may end up with an odd slice, which can be left single. Spread each stack of pastrami with a thin even layer of the Boursin, using all of it. Place a pickle spear on one edge of each stack and roll up jelly roll-style to enclose the pickle. Carefully cut each roll into 4 pieces (see my comments below). Chill well before serving.
Makes 36 pieces / Do not freeze
* I used one package of Hillshire Farm Deli Select pastrami. There were 17 slices in the package. The package says that there are zero carbs per serving but the Hidden Carb Calculator says there are close to 2 carbs per serving. I took the average and counted 1 carb per 7 slices.
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 small clove garlic, minced
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon dill
- 1 teaspoon chives
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
In a mini food processor, process the cream cheese and garlic until blended. Add the remaining ingredients and process until well combined.

Pear-ginger Shooters (Anja’s note: This is delicious with a splash of rum!)
Fresh ginger and fragrant cinnamon infuse this chilled pear soup. Serve it in large shot glasses. Guests may add a splash of vodka if they like.
- SERVINGS – 32
- YIELD – 12 servings, about 1/3 cup each
- PREP TIME – 25 mins
- TOTAL TIME – 4 hrs 45 mins
- 4 ripe Anjou pears, peeled and quartered
- 1 cup apple cider
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 3 tablespoons minced fresh ginger, or ginger juice (see Note)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 4 inch cinnamon stick
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
Stir pears, cider, wine, ginger (or ginger juice) to taste, lemon juice, cinnamon stick and salt in a large saucepan; bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cover, reduce heat, and gently simmer until the pears are very tender, about 20 minutes.
Discard the cinnamon stick. Pour the soup into a large blender or food processor; add honey. Blend or process until smooth. (Use caution when pureeing hot liquids.) Pour into a large bowl, cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 4 hours. Pour into small glasses to serve.
Note: We use bottled ginger juice (pressed gingerroot) to add the taste of fresh ginger without the work of mincing or grating. Use it to flavor drinks, stir-fries, marinades or anywhere you’d use fresh ginger. Find it in specialty stores or online at gingerpeople.com.

Mini Mocha Cheesecakes – Recipe by Kraft
- Prep Time – 30min.
- Total Time – 1hr. 35min.
- Servings – 12 servings
Mocha cheesecake is yummy. Mocha cheesecake batter baked into a muffin tin is also yummy—and results in crowd-pleasing mini cheesecakes.
What You Need
- 10 vanilla creme-filled chocolate sandwich cookies, finely crushed (about 3/4 cup)
- 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
- 2 pkg. (8 oz. each) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. MAXWELL HOUSE Instant Coffee
- 2 tsp. water
- 1 pkg. (4 oz.) BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted, cooled
- 1-1/8 tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder, divided
- 1 cup thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping
- 24 chocolate-covered coffee beans
- Heat oven to 350ºF.
- Mix cookie crumbs and butter; press about 1 Tbsp. onto bottom of each of 12 foil-lined muffin cups. Bake 8 min.
- Beat cream cheese and sugar with mixer until blended. Add eggs; beat just until blended. Dissolve coffee in water. Add to batter with melted chocolate; beat until blended. Spoon about 1/4 cup batter into each cup. (Cups will be full.)
- Bake 23 to 25 min. or until centers are almost set. Cool completely.
- Add 1 tsp. cocoa powder to COOL WHIP; stir gently until blended. Spoon into pastry bag fitted with decorating tip; use to pipe COOL WHIP mixture onto cheesecakes. Garnish with remaining cocoa powder and coffee beans.
