Minus Tide at 7:01 AM of -1.4 feet.
I saw it! I got to see the Diamond Ring and even some Bailey’s Beads!!!!!
It’s foggy here, and dark from the eclipse and *cold*! My hands got really, really cold…. It’s only 51F and with some wind (gusting to 10) and 97% humidity, yeah, it’s cold. It was 60F when we got to the shop.
…The light is coming back, now. I did get photos, but mine are going to be sucky of the eclipse itself. The internet is clogging up as folks upload. 🙂
We overslept, waking just as the eclipse had started. By the time we were outside, we took a look, and there was already a substantial bite gone. When we got to the shop…and yes, we’ll pulled out the eclipse glasses…well, I had mine in my hand…. it was even more so. You could already see the strangeness of the light, which got weirder and weirder.
Tempus made coffee and put on his wizard robe and hat. 🙂 and we got set up outside.
Someone’s dog started to howl and then everyone oo-ed, squeed and cheered, both as the sun vanished and as the sun came back. The Diamond Ring appeared first, and then several of the beads and then the corona was plain, even through the fog. It wasn’t quite clear enough to pick out Mercury and Mars, but I had tears running down my face. I got to see it!
Of course Tempus had to be out there shaking my staff and yelling, “Bring back the sun!” and then, “The magick worked!” 🙂 That’s Tempus….
We were so cold that we came inside almost right away and had customers within minutes, a whole shop full!
Yesterday was busy. It’s the busiest day we’ve had all summer! At that, things started to taper off around 4:30, but that’s when the taco place traffic started up. I did 5 readings during the day and we had lots of small sales.
I also got a couple of pretzels delivered from the Sisters Bakery during the day and they were delicious. We’d been hoping to eat ’em hot, but they arrived just as the first of the readings was getting going. 😦 Delicious, anyway!
We ended up eating some of the veg that I got from the Farmer’s Market but other than that it was all prep for today and taking care of customers.
Today is the Roman Feast of Consualia, the feast of Consus, god of harvests and underground grain stores. Consus’ altar was underground and kept buried for all by two days of the year, just like the seeds that he represents. He didn’t have any special priesthood, so sacrifices were performed on that day by priests of other gods. Games and races were held in his honor. It’s also a special day to honor horses and even tractors, those animals and machines that help us get in the grain harvest. In ancient Rome, horses were pampered on this day, given special foods, manes and tails braided up and hung with garlands before being paraded around and made much of. It sounds kinda like a State Fair! More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consualia
It’s also Bartle-tide, an odd commemoration of a thief or a giant and no one’s sure which! Some think it’s in honor of the Cerne Abbas Giant, a turf-cut figure, or the giant is in honor of the feast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Witton
Today’s Plant is Cascade penstemon, or coast penstemon, Penstemon serrulatus.A member of the plantain family, this was used by the 1stnations peoples as a medicinal remedy for toothache. It’s common name, “Beardtongue” is because the flower appears to be sticking out it’s hairy tongue! It has a lovely flower, and is a semi-deciduous shrub, which usually is very short, unlike many shrubs. The tender shoots that the flowers grow on often get frost-nipped so only survive for a year or so, with the rest of the plant surviving below the level of surrounding plants, acting as a perennial ground-cover. –Feminine, Venus, Earth – Use for headaches, particularly headaches coming from tooth pain or infection by binding the herb with red wool and/or putting it into a red cloth pouch and bind to the head, or even put into your pillowcase at bedtime. You can put a leaf in your shoes to help with the effects of standing on them too long. Roots protect from snakebite and a bunch of the flowers will chase negativity away, particularly that coming from outside. Iow, it won’t do much for a bad mood…. Also known as Harvest Home, this Sabbat is named for Mabon , the Divine Youth of antiquity who was hidden yet ever remains as the Sun. His name literally means ‘son’. Mabon (Harvest Home, Autumn Equinox) is a celebration of Thanksgiving for the blessings and abundance of the year, for the food, clothing and shelter which sustains us now and will continue to sustain us through the quiet, dark months of Winter. We celebrate the manifestation of the fruits of our labors and look forward to rest and repose after the harvesting. It is the time of the last preparations before the coming of darkness in Winter. As such, it is also the time to prepare the spirit for an interval of introspection and inner growth.
Mabon is the time of equilibrium, when light and dark, day and night are equal. On this day, we have 12 hours of sunlight, 12 hours of moonlight. The forces of light and dark meet this day, however, after this day, the night gains in strength and meditations and inner workings become more and more intense. For a moment, Time pauses and then begins his journey from the powers of light and activity into the powers of darkness and introspection. We bid farewell to the Sun who has fully matured, passed his prime and is turning old. We begin to welcome the coming of winter.
The celebrations of this Sabbat are serious yet joyous. They traditionally include hayrides, canning parties, winemaking, fairs which show off our harvests, meditations and preparation for study and inner work. One tradition is the making and burying of the corn dolly. Create your corn dolly from the husks of ears of corn, then charge it with the qualities and goals you are working on, finally bury it as a seed. When spring comes, if you have truly made your preparations, those qualities and goals will become a part of you and your life.
Mabon falls during the astrological sign of Libra, the sign of the Scales of Balance. Thus the energies of this time are those of balance, consideration and fruitful partnerships. Mabon is particularly sacred to Cerridwen, water oriented Goddess of Autumn, to whom was entrusted the guardianship of the Seeds of the future and the arts of Prophesy. She is able to look into the mysteries of the dark of winter and of the Otherworld. Her symbol is the Cauldron and her sacred fruit is the Apple. All nuts and seeds are sacred to her. Cernunnos in His role as Lord of Darkness and protector of all things wild and free was given to him the gifts of life by Cailleache, the crone aspect of Cerridwen, at this time of year.
Please focus your Mabon meditations and celebrations on helping to strengthen Balance and Clarity throughout the world. Send your thoughts and energy to facilitate the wisdom of Cerridwen so that the Seeds of the Future are positive for all of us, that we may come through this time of darkness wiser and clearer and that all of us, throughout the world, may live in balance. So mote it be.
