Daily Stuff 9-3-17 Day of Remembrance for the Pagan People of Novgorod

Hi, folks!

Featured photo by Ken Gagne, House Capuchin Project Day from Noon to 6pm.

The sunlight is rather thin, between smoke and high cloud and some leftover fog. 61F and just a light breeze although various places are registering temps up to 73 and wind to 10mph.

Yesterday started early. Tempus got me set up outside to work on the mint and he kept working in the back trying to get the table clear so that I could do some cutting out, later. It was chilly out there at first, in the wind, so I kept coming back in and I took the opportunity to see the folks leaving the ISS. ….then something kicked up my asthma and I had to come in and sit for a bit.

It kept getting worse, but I finally got a nap, sitting propped upright on the sofa…. and after that I was ok. I ended up doing a reading and not long after the smoke showed up. Everything went a funny pinkish color. After that I watched/listened to the landing of the crew from the ISS. Tempus and I watched spottily from the undocking through the landing and past. They come down on a huge parachute!

I tried some more on the mint, but had to stop. The air quality had gotten very, very bad. I worked on the computer and did a few small things from the drawer. We went across the street for supper. No green beans and beef. 😦 I guess I’ve been telling everyone how good it was! I had mushu chicken instead which is yummers, too! Tempus had Kung Pao beef. We haven’t eaten out in awhile and we were both pretty tired, so it made sense, and we have plenty for lunch today. So, I never got to the pincushion filling. I’m going to have to try again today.

Today we have our project day. I have to get more done on the mint, pull out the balls box and I’m hoping we’re going to cut the tinkle loom that’s been requested, plus some more of the wooden animals.

I’m also want to get farther on getting some of the “chunk” pieces of stone out. I got the sodalite yesterday, but I have some decent pieces of obsidian that just need to be labeled.

magick motif slav Kolovrat RodnoverToday is the Day of Remembrance for the Pagan People of Novgorod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novgorod  mentions this, not at all!). Many Slavs, particularly those who are trying to re-create the destroyed faith of our ancestors, count this as a day of blackest mourning and are very, very bitter about it.

“When the people of Novgorod were notified that Dobrinja wanted to Christianize them, they held a “Veche” (Thing) and decided to swear an oath: ‘Do not letrod-slavic-deity-statue-carved-from-3-sides_1 Dobrinja into town. Do not let our idols be destroyed.’ Dobrinja sent word to them offering them silver, but the people refused him and would not let him enter the city.” The highest Volvh under the direction of a Slavic Pagan Priest, named Bogomil, (also known as Nightingale or “Solovey”), Voevoda Ugonay goes on to declare, went about the city on a horse, declaring with a loud voice: ‘Better for us to die than to let our Gods see disgrace.’ However, Dobrinja prevailed and each of the idols were cast into the river and the wooden sculptures were incinerated. This, truly, was a day of great mourning and sadness for the Pagan People. The events which happened on this day demonstrates all the “love” and essence of Christianity. ” – Iokimovskaja Letopis from http://www.irminsul.org/arc/010sz.html

mahonia aquifolium oregon grape plantToday’s Plant is Cascade Oregon GrapeMahonia aquifolium, or Dull Oregon Grape, Mahonia nervosa, occasionally called Holly Grape. It’s a lovely, spiky-leaved large shrub or small tree with amazing clusters of bright, yellow flowers in the early spring. Dull Oregon Grape is a shorter plant with duller leaves with a nerve-like pattern of veins, but they both have the same magickal properties. The locals used it to help with rheumatism and it has been tested to replace Goldenseal in the pharmacopeia with some good results. The fruits can be made into jam or wine, although they’re too sour to eat. Feminine, Earth, carry to draw money and prosperity, or popularity. Today’s Astro & Calendar

Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 9/6 at 12:03am.  Waxing Gibbous MoonFrom seven to fourteen days after the new moon. For spells that need concentrated work over a ¼ moon cycle this is the best time for constructive workings. Aim to do the last working on the day of the Full moon, before the turn. Keywords for the Gibbous phase are: analyze, prepare, trust. It is the time in a cycle to process the results of the actions taken during the First Quarter. During this phase you are gathering information. Give up making judgments; it will only lead to worry. Your knowledge is incomplete. Laugh. Analyze and filter. LOOK WITHIN. God/dess aspect: Maiden/Youth, but in the uncommitted phase, the Warriors – Associated God/desses: Dion, Dionysius, Venus, Thor. Phase ends at the Full on 9/4 at 12:03pm.

Jupiter is getting harder to see low in the afterglow of sunset.
Look for bright Vega passing the zenith as twilight fades, if you live in the world’s mid-northern latitudes. Vega goes right through your zenith if you’re at latitude 39° north (near Baltimore, Kansas City, Lake Tahoe, Sendai, Beijing, Athens, Lisbon).
As dawn becomes bright on Monday through Wednesday mornings September 4th through 6th, Mars glimmers less than 1° from Regulus very low in the east. Mercury is now about 3° right or upper right of the pair.
Jupiter (magnitude –1.7, in Virgo) is just above the west horizon during twilight and quickly sets. Much fainter Spica is 3° or 4° to its lower left. Again, bring those binoculars.
The Cassini Probe is taking its last dives past Saturn. The final “suicide plunge” should be on 9/15. More here: https://www.space.com/37980-mysteries-of-saturn-near-cassini-finale.html

Mabon Magick – Spells

Pagan Studies : – Ease Transitions Spell 9/4

Today is the festival of the Apache Goddess, Changing Woman. This spell helps us to embrace and learn from the changes that come into our life. To start, decorate your sacred space with potted plants. Place on your altar pictures of yourself from all stages of your life. Light a new green candle and ask Changing Woman to help you grow and change. Look at the photos of yourself when you were a baby, a young child, a teenager, and so forth. Realize as you study the pictures that although you’ve changed radically from your early childhood, you are still fundamentally the same person. Pray to Changing Woman to help you make any changes for the better that may be necessary in your life. ~Lily Gardner-Butts

Autumn Blessing – Spell Date:  Tuesday, September 23, 2003

On this day of balance—between hot and cold, light and dark—we can find balance in an autumnal blessing. Use a white and a black candle, placed side by side, for this ritual. Breathe in the glow that comes from the equal balance of day and night. Decorate your sacred space with fruits and grain and harvest leaves, as you slowly speak this verse:

Protection covers me and mine,
Abundant gifts grow from Nature divine.
Mabon comes with
balance dear,
The second such time of the year.
Second harvest abundance flows,
Through our labor the storehouse grows.
We fill our stores through harvest Moon,
For winter’s cold is coming soon.
Harvest brings both hope and fear,
Harder times are drawing near.
Bless this house with abundance clear,
And bless all who are dwelling here.
Strength of the cycles
For all to see,
Bringing color to land and tree.
Red, yellow, brown, and amber,
Dress the forests, preparing for slumber.
My spirit embrace the dwindling light,
I am ready now for the longer night.
Protection and safety there will be,
As the wheel of the year turns, blessed be.
The balance now is
perfect and right,
Preparations made for Demeter’s night.
Searching she goes and searching she will be,
Till Kore’s return to you and me.
Mabon’s magic dances in me,
Autumn blessings to all,
So mote it be. https://www.llewellyn.com/spell.php?spell_id=1222
