Yesterday was a long day, but very productive. Tempus was mostly cleaning while I was writing and finding newsletter pieces. Most of the stuff from the weekend is put away, now, and we almost have enough of a workspace for me to do the pickled cabbage. I’m hoping we’re going to get that done this morning, so it’ll be ready for Sunday.
Sewing in the evening was just me, so I spent it sorting out projects and then when I got home, cutting out a new set. I also finished and turned a few more of the pieces that I’ve been working on, since I have my turners back out of the display.
Well, in between watching Cassini….
Tempus headed for Newport around 9pm and wasn’t rolling until 11:30, but he got in not long after 5. I spent the evening alternating reading, dozing, computer work, and cutting out fabrics, and then after sleeping for several hours woke just in time to see the last few minutes of Cassini’s life.
Muhgawd that lady taught us a lot, and right up until about 45 seconds before she broke apart on her way down into the atmosphere, and after that there was telemetry right up until the last second and beyond! Not only the information about Saturn, itself, but there was some stuff about the jets and vapor of Enceladus that was fascinating and getting to see the actual surface of Titan (…that was the Huygen’s Probe that Cassini carried that far)., and finding so many other moons, and actually figuring out what makes up the rings! …and the photos! Try searching “Cassini Saturn Moons Images” for some of them. Rest in Peace, lady Cassini, and thank you!
…and for something funny, Elon Musk released a “blooper reel” yesterday of some of the failures of SpaceX. It’s the music that makes it so very funny, so listen to it with the sound up. …and yes, those bells are actually in the music. It’s the Liberty Bell march by Sousa…. …and I can almost hear the groans in the control rooms over those glitches.
Today is another work day. Tempus and I are both sleepy, but we’ll keep on until closing, which is still at 7pm, although that’s likely to change, soon. I’m hoping I can do that pickled cabbage this morning and then set up a soup so I can try doing my dumplings. I have some more newsletter files to pick up the data for, still, mostly the astronomy stuff.
Greater Eleusinian Mysteries – This day was the climax of the festival when initiates were shown an ear of wheat as the symbol of death/life/rebirth. The festival went on for many days with special events, sacrifices, rituals and processions. More information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleusinian_Mysteries#Greater_Mysteries . The Mysteries were secret and initiates simply didn’t write about them, so all we know are the bits and scraps that were public. Eleusis was where the Oomphalos, the belly-button stone of the World. was situated.
Today’s plant is Red Elderberry, Sambucus racemosa. It’s a large shrub that has white flower clusters in the spring and red berry clusters late in the summer. Planet: Venus, Element: Water Deity: Hel, Holda, The White Lady, Magickal properties: Exorcism, Prosperity, Banishment and Healing The leaves and berries are used for protection and in breaking spells that were cast against you or to undo spells of evil intent. Growing an elder in your garden will protect your property from misfortune and harm. In Europe they planted elder in cemeteries to keep away the evil spirits. Elder wands can be used to drive out evil spirits or thought forms, and music on panpipes or flutes of elder have the same power as the wand. Elder should not be cut without first making a prayer, and don’t burn Elder in fear of bringing about ill-luck. “Elder is the Lady’s Tree, burn it not or cursed ye be.” More here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus_racemosa and here:http://www.thegoddesstree.com/trees/Elder.htm

By the Saturday morning the 16th, brightening Mercury and still-faint Mars are almost kissing-close low in the east before dawn
Before sunrise on Sunday morning the 16th, Mercury is only about 0.3° from dimmer Mars. Bring optical aid to scan very low in the east, lower left of Venus, as shown here.
Mercury is having a good apparition low in the dawn. Its brightness more than doubles this week, from magnitude +0.2 to –0.8. On the morning of September 10th Mercury is closely passing Regulus, which is much fainter at magnitude +1.4. On the 16th it’s going even closer by Mars, magnitude +1.8. Look for this action down to the lower left of brilliant Venus. Bring binoculars.
This evening Saturn‘s biggest and brightest moon, Titan, stands about four ring-lengths to Saturn’s east. A 4-inch telescope will begin to show the orange color of its smoggy atmosphere.
Goddess Month of Mala runs from 9/6 – 10/2
Celtic Tree Month of Muin/Vine, Sep 2 – 29
Runic half-month of Kenaz/Ken/Kebo – September 13-27 – Ken represents a flaming torch within the royal hall, so it’s the time of the creative fire – the forge where natural materials are transmuted by the force of the human will into a mystical third, an artifact that could not otherwise come into being. The positive aspects of sexuality that are immanent in Freya and Frey come into play at this time. Nigel Pennick, The Pagan Book of Days, Destiny Books, Rochester, Vermont, USA, 1992, p. 102

Celtic Tree Month of Muin/Vine Sep 2 – 29 – Muin – (MUHN, like “foot”), vine – The grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is a vine growing as long as 35 m (115 feet), in open woodlands and along the edges of forests, but most commonly seen today in cultivation, as the source of wine, grape juice, and the grape juice concentrate that is so widely used as a sweetener. European grapes are extensively cultivated in North America, especially in the southwest, and an industry and an agricultural discipline are devoted to their care and the production of wine. Grapes are in the Grape family (Vitaceae).

…it has great practical value – you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you – daft as a bush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough. – Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Persephone Returns Ritual – Crone’s Corner
Heton Lampador Haera, the torchlit procession of initiates of the Eleusinian Mysteries, represents Grain Goddess Demeter searching for her daughter Persephone. As we prepare for the season when Persephone returns to the underworld and the land becomes cold and dark, we give thanks for the gifts her mother has bestowed. A Demeter ritual is one that can solidify our appreciation of all that we have, and enhance the shift of the seasons. Dress in robes of autumn colors, and burn candles of red, orange, gold, and violet. Place autumn fruits and vegetables on the altar—especially apples, pumpkins, and corn. Display a pomegranate in a prominent spot. Pomegranates are sacred to Persephone, who after swallowing three of the seeds was taken into the underworld. Gaze upon the abundant gifts of the earth, and give thanks to Demeter for providing all the gifts you possess. ~ Ruby Lavender, GrannyMoon’s Morning Feast Archives Crone’s Corner – http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Crones_Corner/
Touch the Earth Ritual
As the fields of August begin to bring forth the bounty provided for us by the Goddess, it is now time to get in touch—literally—with the Earth. At sunset, respectfully approach a newly harvested field, and speak these words:
You, who have nurtured our sacred seed,
and fulfill our every need.
You, who have are known as Demeter and Ishtar,
who follow the seasons
by Sun and Moon and star.
You, whom we call Mother Earth,
please accept my deepest thanks.
Now, kneel forward until your forehead and palms touch the ground. Feel the life–force, and accept this power even as your own energy sinks deep into the soil. During this ritual, cast no spell, nor ask for anything. Simply touch the Earth, and give thanks. ~ James Kambos )0( From The Morning Feast Archives , Crone’s Corner – http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Crones_Corner/
Silliness – Late Night Funny – Congressional leaders are still upset with President Trump’s decision on the DACA immigration plan. They called it “brainless,” “heartless,” and “cowardly.” All Trump needs are some ruby slippers, and he’s off to see the wizard! – Jimmy Fallon
