Daily Stuff 1-27-18 Lewis Carroll

Hi, folks!

Featured photo by Ken Gagne. Herbs 11-1. Sewing 3-5.

The sky was a blank, mottled grey as we were coming in to the shop. Everything is dripping and there was rain coming down, even if it’s stopped for the moment. All the distances are obscured. It’s warm, though, 51F. The wind was up during the night and the little lakes and bay were ruffled, except for the protected spots, which were covered with little circles from the raindrops. The wind is at 12mph now, with gusts up to 20mph. We got 1/2 an inch of rain yesterday and so far today, about 1/4 of an inch.

Yesterday was odd. Once I was up I contacted Tempus and we decided that I was going to stay home and work there. I spent most of the day on the cookbook and then switched over to alternating sewing and reading, later. He was at the shop all day and had a little business with several people stopping by to browse or chat. When he got home he went to sleep within an 1/2 hour, while I finished up a project and then turned in myself.

Today is the workshops, although no one’s here for Herbs. I’m heading into the back in a minute to work. Tempus is making another pot of coffee…. Yeah, that kind of morning! We’re going to see whether we can track down my cake pans that are awol. Sewing Workshop will probably be in the back, too, unless someone else comes in. I have projects to cut out and a pattern to make.

…and I should be getting yesterday’s newsletter filled in this afternoon, at some point.

motif, tree celtic duir oregon white oakToday’s Plant is Oregon White OakQuercus garryana, also called Garry oak, or just Oregon oak. It doesn’t grow well out here on the coast, although supposedly there are some specimens. I’ve never seen one out here, but they’re *all* over the Willamette Valley, many of them hosting our local mistletoe, Phoradendron flavescens. This is the same relation of tree and herb that gave rise to the legends of the Golden Bough in Europe, although these are *far* different species. – Masculine, Sun ,Fire, Dagda, (Jupiter, Thor, Pan) – Use in magicks for protection, money, potency, fertility – Burn the bark to draw off illness, carry and piece of the for luck and protection, acorns are used to tip male power wands and worn as necklaces by some priests and can be carried to increase fertility and male potency to preserve health and long life. Place in windows to ward off lightning. Plant an acorn at the new moon if you need money. Fires of oak wood draw off illness. – Wiccaning or Seining – Wiccaning or Seining is the ceremony where we welcome a new child to the world. Holly water is used for girls and Oak for boys. Make by a tablespoon of powdered leaf brew in 1 cup of very hot water for about 10 minutes, then adding that to 2 cups of cold water.  Sprinkle or wash baby with it. feast 0127 Alice_par_John_Tenniel_30Today is the birthday of the English mathematician and author, Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson; d. January 14, 1898), in 1832. He wrote lots of wonderful nonsense verses, including the “Hunting of the Snark” and Jabberwocky, but is best known for his books “Alice in Wonderland” and the sequel “Through the Looking Glass”. This despite him being a mathematician and logician and teacher! These latter things were his life’s work, but he has been immortalized in his hobbies. There is a wonderful article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Carroll

Love & Light,

Today’s Astro & Calendar

Waxing Moon MagickThe waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 1/31 at 5:27am.  Waxing Gibbous Moon – From seven to fourteen days after the new moon. For spells that need concentrated work over a ¼ moon cycle this is the best time for constructive workings. Aim to do the last working on the day of the Full moon, before the turn. Keywords for the Gibbous phase are: analyze, prepare, trust. It is the time in a cycle to process the results of the actions taken during the First Quarter. During this phase you are gathering information. Give up making judgments; it will only lead to worry. Your knowledge is incomplete. Laugh. Analyze and filter. LOOK WITHIN. God/dess aspect: Maiden/Youth, but in the uncommitted phase, the Warriors – Associated God/desses: Dion, Dionysius, Venus, Thor. Phase ends at the Full on 1/29 at 5:27pm.

The Moon visits the Pleiades and the Hyades as it crosses Taurus after first quarter.
After dark the Great Square of <<< Pegasus is sinking in the west, tipped onto one corner. Meanwhile the Big Dipper >>> is creeping up in the north-northeast, tipped up on its handle.

The eclipse in Grants Pass by Earshel Hogan Photography 9/27/15

Start planning for the total lunar eclipse that will come on the morning of January 31st for western North America and Hawaii. The eclipse happens on the evening of the 31st for Australia and eastern Asia local date. See the January Sky & Telescope, page 48.
Mars and Jupiter (magnitudes +1.2 and –2.0, respectively) rise in the east-southeast in the hours after midnight. They’re high in the south by early dawn. Jupiter, the first up, is the brightest point in the pre-dawn sky, shining in dim Libra. Mars glows to Jupiter’s lower left in the head of Scorpius. Mars passes Beta Scorpii this week; see the January 31 entry above. Jupiter and Mars are 10° apart on the morning of January 27th, widening to 13° apart by February 3rd.

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Kindness by Naomi Shihab Nye, fromWords Under the Words: Selected Poems.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to gaze at bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

Imbolc Magick – Meditations

Imbolc Meditiation by Aradian Waterstarr

Breathe deep… Breathe from your belly, from your core, your center… Inhale and become… Exhale and release… Release all things that do not serve. Anger. Fear. Resentment. Shame. Sadness. Let them flow out of your breath, down to Mother Earth… Breathe in and know that we all breathe the same breath…. Breath out and know that you are safe, surrounded by friends and Gods who will let no harm come to you… Breathe and let the cradling darkness of the Mother envelop you… Rest in Her mysteries as you breathe in… And out…

Floating in the Mother’s womb, you know that you are meant to go forward, to receive a message, to seek the path that She has set you upon… The cat has long been a guide and friend to Witches, and tonight we call upon the power of Cat to guide us to the Lady of the Crossroads who sees all possible pathways…

You hear a sound, maybe a meow, or a roar… You can feel the silent steps of the Cat coming to guide you to the Lady. The darkness fades a little, and as you look around you can see the Cat who has been sent to you. This Cat is your guide… Some of you may be guided by your own house cat, or one who has passed away… Others will be guided by their Cat totems, ranging from Tigers, to Lions, to Panthers, to Leopards, to Lynx’s. Let Cat come to you in the way it is meant to… Spend some time with this Cat… Ask its name and why it has been sent to you…

It is time to go to the Lady… Cat turns, and begins walking away from you… Follow Cat… Follow and know that it is leading you to the Lady of the Crossroads… As you walk with Cat, feel around you for the Direction that you are walking in… If you do not feel which direction you are walking in, you may ask Cat which direction it is taking you in… By paying attention to North, East, South, and West you will get a better idea of what Path you are being set upon…

Looking down at your feet, you see that Cat has taken you upon a Pathway… Looking around you, pay attention to your surroundings… What do you see? Are there trees, animals, birds? Are you near the ocean, a river, or in a desert? What do you smell? Hear? Let these visions come to you…

Looking ahead of you, you see a lady, cloaked in fire… Her red hair shines like the sun, and her eyes are as green as the deep waters… As you get closer, you notice that she is standing at the center of a four-way Crossroad… This is the Lady Bridget. Goddess of Fire, Inspiration, Poetry, Blacksmiths, and the Crossroads. She holds the knowledge of Pathworking and possibilities… Cat brings you to Her, and lays at Her feet… You are struck by Her beauty and obvious strength.

Let Bridget offer to you her words of wisdom… Ask Her any questions you have about the Path are currently on… Let Bridget show you the possible outcomes of your actions, and the possible alternatives…

Ask Bridget any last quick questions that you have for Her, and give Her your thanks… Cat stands, and begins walking down one of the Pathways in the Crossroad… Follow… Is this the same Pathway that you followed to meet Bridget, or a different one? As Cat guides you back to your physical body, is the scenery the same, or somehow altered? Are there any new smells or sounds?

You arrive at a shimmering black-misty Veil… Ask the Cat if it has any last words for you, and thank Cat for it’s guidance… Step through the Veil, and be cradled once again in the Mother’s formlessness…

In this darkness, you are within your own being… Breathe deep and allow yourself to begin slipping back into your physical body… Breathe and become aware once again of your physical body and your physical surroundings… Breathe and let your mind and soul reenter your physical vessel…

Begin to wiggle your toes and fingers… Breathe deep, and begin to slowly move your arms and feet… Roll your head from side to side… Breathe deep, and when you are ready, open your eyes.

You have seen many things in this Quest that will be of great benefit to you. Anytime that you need guidance on your Path, you may call on Cat or Lady Bridget and seek their guidance… If you were led by a Cat totem, it would be a good idea to continue working with it… If you felt a deep connection with Bridget, you might wish to build an altar for Her, and continue working with Her.

In order for you to keep a blessing and reminder from this Pathwork, you will now be instructed in how to create one of Bridget’s sacred charms, a Bridget’s Cross. This charm will act as a ward of protection, a symbol of the presence of Bridget, and as a amulet for aiding you to keep in contact with the knowledge that was gained at the Crossroads.

Hecate’s Brooch Winter Meditation – Morgan

Close your eyes.  Take a deep breath and relax your eyes, your face, your shoulders, your arms, your hands.  Take a deep breath, and relax your chest, your back, your belly, your hips, your legs, your feet.

Take a deep breath, and relax your mind, let it empty of everyday worries and thoughts.  Take a deep breath, and relax your heart, let it open in perfect safety to the love and wisdom of the Goddess.

You notice you feel a bit chilled, and when you look around there is near darkness, an open field with dark leafless trees.  You begin to walk, and feel snow crunching beneath your feel, cold snowflakes brushing your checks, and an icy wind that tries to find its way under your warm coat.  You walk and walk, and in the distance far away there is a tiny cottage.  There is a light in the window, and smoke curling from the chimney.  You walk and walk thru the wind and snow, getting colder and colder.  Finally you are at the door of the cottage.  It is opened by a very old woman dressed in all in black.

She hangs your wet coat by the fire and invites you to sit at the hearth.  She brings you a cup of warm soup, which warms your hands and your belly as your toes and fingers thaw and you watch the flickering flames.

The old woman speaks.  “Welcome, little one.  do not fear the dark of winter, it is just a season like any other.  When the noise and light of the holidays fade away there is welcome dark and quiet, a time to rest, reflect and dream.  On these cold, quiet nights come to me and listen, and I will teach you and tell you secrets.”  So you listen…

A while later it is time to go.  You thank the Goddess for her wisdom.  You take your dry warm coat from its place by the fire.  As you step thru the door the cottage is gone, and you are standing at a cross roads in the snow.  But the wind is not so biting, and you

begin to walk toward the lights of our circle quite nearby.   Soon

you are back in your place in our circle.  You feel your chair beneath you, and begin to wiggle your fingers and toes.  Take a deep breath, as your awareness returns totally to your physical body.

When you are ready, open your eyes.

motif Silliness SmilieSilliness – Football Wedding

Two guys are talking about their boss’s upcoming wedding.
One says, “It’s ridiculous, he’s rich, but he’s 93 years old, and she’s just 26! What kind of a wedding is that?”
The other says, “Well, we have a name for it in my family.”
“What do you call it?”
“We call it a football wedding.”
The first asks, “What’s a football wedding?”
The other says, “She’s waiting for him to kick off!”
