It’s 50 and overcast with little wind, 3mph here and no gusts. There are a couple of spots near the water that are getting over 10mph, but only a few. We got nearly 1/2 and inch of rain today, but it stopped early enough this morning that there’s only a trace today. Probably going to get wet later in the evening when we’re starting the paper run.
Yesterday started slowly again. Tempus had paperwork to catch up on and I ended up taking a nap again. Once I was up I managed to do some writing and then mid-afternoon he went out to run some errands after I had printed out a couple of recipes of things we were looking to make for supper.
Once he was back he started the bread maker while I was going through the mail. I finally got a couple of books that I ordered before Christmas! …and then he ran right back out to the bank because we had gotten a refund of something where two checks went in and one was a duplicate.
He got the table set up, so that I could make the dumplings (which were what was running in the breadmaker). I made some sauce to have with them, and he figured on pulling out meatballs. By 6:20 the dumplings were formed and rising and the water getting ready to boil. …and it didn’t….and didn’t…. finally, almost 20 minutes into class it was boiling and the dumplings turned out great. I did the first one and Tempus the other two. More to come!
The moon was bright enough even through the clouds that I could see well enough to not use a flashlight heading down the path. That was a good thing because I had my hands full of goodies. We brought some mini-muffins, cheese and a dumpling home. We did a couple of chores and then turned in.
Both of us took our time getting up today and puttered a bit even then. He’s headed to the shop to set up a dough for rolls that he’ll bake here, once he’s back. I slept a bit more and I’m going to pull out some embroidery, a pattern that I want to get set up so I don’t have to cart more around than the roll of fabric for a bit. I think I’m also going to research some patterns for those little clasp purses that I’m making. They’re not quite coming out the way I envisioned.
Could *you* pass a citizenship exam, if you had to? http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/07/what-if-you-had-to-earn-american-citizenship/309398/ …and can you beat my score? I’m shocked that it was so low, actually. “Your Citizenship Score: 64, Citizenship attained, with distinction.” My grandparents would be very ashamed of me for not scoring 100%.
From 1/30/16. “There’s a chickadee on the seedball pecking busily. He’s actually hanging from the bottom of it, completely upside-down! Best pic I could get of him.”
Today plant is Common Maidenhair, the Spleenwort, Asplenium family, Pictured is Asplenium trichomanes ssp. quadrivalens.) This is not the Maidenhair fern which is Adiantum family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiantum )! The Doctrine of signatures associates this plant with the treatment of diseases of the spleen because of the shape of the sori (the reproductive spots on the leaves). Asplenium nidus and Asplenium bulbiferum are often sold as decorative potted plants. It is used by herbalists as a Demulcent; Expectorant; & Laxative. (although it may have some cancer-causing chemicals in it and as an Emmenagogue (which helps to fix problems with the female reproductive cycle. At one point it was used in cures for syphis. It even makes a good hair rinse. – Masculine, Saturn, Earth, – It is used in magics to cure an enlarged spleen or in any of the associated blood disorders. We made amulets at one point for a kiddo who had exploded his spleen in an fall and he’s all healed up. “Gravel” or stones in the spleen an dliver can also be helped this way. It should not be used by women, except as a contraceptive. More on the associated plant for today’s martyr here: Asplenium trichomanes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asplenium
Today is the feast day of St Martina of Rome, virgin and martyr, died 228c.e. – An emperor wanted to marry her. When he took her to Apollo’s temple there was an earthquake that knocked down the statue, which then talked to her. She’s one of the ones that they did everything to, poured hot oil on her, tried to yank her apart with hooks, a lion wouldn’t eat her, etc. They finally cut off her head and instead of blood, milk flowed out. Ew…. Makes you wonder what the fascination with taking people apart is…. More on her here: http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-martina/

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Blessed be this season of Imbolc
Mother Earth stirs from Her long sleep.
Everything is waiting for spring.
This is the season of purification, a renewing of life.
At this time and in this place between the worlds,
I come to the Lady that I may gain counsel.
I know my path is within your keeping.
Guide me in the year to come
As there is a renewal within the plants and animals,
so shall there be renewal in my life.
