Yesterday started slowly. Tempus toasted me a couple of kolacky to have with my coffee and then I started in on embroidery again. …and kept going and going. He finally headed out on errands around 3 and then to storage again around 4pm.
At 5:42 the sunlight disappeared out of the shop, but it was hitting the candle wall before it did! Tempus ran in a few minutes later and we headed over to the park to watch the sunset and to see the conjunction. Sunset was pretty amazing. There was a green flash on the cloud above, just as the sun went over the horizon, but later a supersun , very, very red appeared on the cloud above it and then turned into a red pillar that reached 1/2 way up the sky. We did finally see Venus about 20 minutes after sunset, but despite hanging around for another 10 minutes after that, never did see Mercury. 🙂
We hurried back to the shop and Tempus got some supper together, but I had to eat during class. That went well tonight, and after we watched the rocket launch. Well, we tried to. Something is glitching some of the videos on my shop computer and Tempus’ was misbehaving to, so we watched a recording of it at home.
Chores today and more embroidery for me. Tempus is going to have to do some shopping in Newport before the paper route. I’ll be at the shop until he comes to pick me up, which is usually around 3am. I have to get more newsletters set up and do more embroidery. I’m getting close to the last on that, thankfully.
Today’s Plant is Cittim Bark (Cascara), Rhamnus purshiana. It is a potent laxative and has been used for that for centuries. –Masculine, Saturn, Earth – Sprinkle an infusion of this around the home before legal proceedings, to help you win your case. It is used in money spells and worn in a brown cloth amulet will protect again evil influences and hexes. It can be sewn into a poppet to attract those influences away from you, but place this outside at night, especially. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascara_Sagrada
Today is the anniversary of the 1836 defeat at the Alamo. Despite all the mythology surrounding it and the romanticization of the event, it’s a rather sordid tale of people disobeying orders, not enough money to properly support an isolated band of men and their equipment, government disorganization and mis-understanding on both sides as to what each other were after. The main thing that it did was to upset that Texian side enough to give them a morale boost. Today’s Astro & Calendar
Waning Moon Magick – From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. Magicks of this sort, started now, should be ended before the phase change to the New Moon. – Associated God/dess: Hera/Hero, Cybele, Zeus the Conqueror, Mars/Martius, Anansi, Prometheus. Phase ends at the Quarter on 3/9 at 3:20am.
With the Moon out of the evening sky, this is a fine week to look for the zodiacal light if you live in the mid-northern latitudes — now that the ecliptic tilts high upward from the western horizon at nightfall. From a clear, clean, dark site, look west at the very end of twilight for a vague but huge, narrow pyramid of pearly light. It’s very tall and tilted to the left, aligning along the constellations of the zodiac. What you’re seeing is sunlit interplanetary dust, orbiting the Sun near the ecliptic plane. Believe it or not, seen from interstellar distances this would be the solar system’s most prominent feature after the Sun itself. The “zodiacal lights” of dust around other stars may be a real obstacle to someday seeing their small, terrestrial planets.
Jupiter and the waning gibbous Moon rise in company around the middle of the night tonight. By early dawn on Thursday, they hang together in fine view in the south. Jupiter (magnitude –2.2, in Libra) rises around 11 or midnight to shine as the brightest point in the early-morning sky. Jupiter is at its highest and best for telescopes in the south before the beginning of dawn.

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion/Ash, Feb 18 – Mar 17, Nion (NEE-uhn), ash – the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).
