Today is the Ides of March, mostly known today for the death of Julius Caesar, but they were a religious celebration during the Roman Empire. They were sacred to Jupiter and Anna Perenna. “The ides of March have come,” meaning to say that the prophecy had not been fulfilled, to which the seer replied “Aye, Caesar; but not gone.” More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Julius_Caesar and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ides_of_March#Religious_observances and on Anna Perenna here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Perenna

Orion tilts westward after dark now. As he turns down further, his three-star belt assumes its horizontal springtime position (seen from mid-northern latitudes). Orion’s Belt is vertical when Orion is rising into the evening around Christmastime.
Mars and Saturn rise in the pre-dawn hours. Both are magnitude +0.6, in Sagittarius. The first glimmers of dawn find them in the south-southeast far left of bright Jupiter, and about half that far left of Mars-colored Antares. Mars, on the right, is drawing closer to Saturn as seen from Earth’s moving point of view. Mars and Saturn appear 12° apart on the morning of March 10th (when the waning Moon stands between them) and 8½° apart by the 17th. They’ll pass each other by 1.3° on April 2nd.

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion/Ash, Feb 18 – Mar 17, Nion (NEE-uhn), ash – the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).

There is a bird that lives deep in the snowy mountains. Tortured by night’s numbing cold, it cries that it will build a warm nest in the morning. Yet, when day breaks, it sleeps the day away, basking in the warmth of the sun. So it continues, crying vainly throughout its life. People are often the same, lamenting their circumstances yet passing by every opportunity to change. – Taro Gold
Seed Planting Spell
Ostara, like Mabon is a hinge-point in the year. As the Wheel revolves around the rebirth of the Sun and Son at Yule, this is the point where Winter turns to Spring. This is a time when you can begin new things or leave old things behind. Decide which you’re going to do. Make it specific, something you can turn into words.
Take a cup of earth from the tray.
Take 3 seeds from the basket that is going around if you’re beginning something new and 5 if you’re leaving something behind.
Press the seeds into the soil with intent as we meditate on the changing of the energy tide from Winter to Spring. (play the Change of the Tide on a stereo)
Ostara Egg Spell – March 20th, 2007
Color of the day: Red – Incense of the day: Myrrh
The Spring or Vernal Equinox marks the pagan holiday of Ostara. It is a time of balance and a celebration of the return of springtime. The spring holidays of many cultures celebrate with symbols of birth, growth, and fertility, such as rabbits and eggs. Most cultures gave their goddesses springtime gifts of eggs to ensure fertility and blessings. The yellow of the yolk symbolizes the returning Sun and the white shell represents the purity of the returning Maiden Goddess. Across time and across cultures, people decorated eggs in colors and symbols to reflect newness and freshness. The beautifully and intricately decorated Ukrainian eggs are made by writing eggs with beeswax in a batik or resist method. The dye is applied and the waxed part remains uncolored. Called pysanky, the Ukrainian word for decorated egg, they are prized works of art. Witches can do a magical pysanky by writing or drawing glyphs, runes, and symbols on the eggs and then dyeing them. Focus your intention on writing and decorating a hardboiled egg; use meaningful symbols and then dye it an appropriate color. Focus your wish or desire into the egg. Offer thanks to the Goddess, then eat it mindfully, imagining the new magic filling you like the pure sunlight of the season.

Ostara Creation Spell
This joyous holiday honors the spring goddess, Ostara, whose name means “movement toward the rising Sun.” Just as Imbolc signals the return of light, Ostara signals the awakening of the Earth. Trees are blooming, bulbs are pushing up out of the ground, birds are nesting, and animals are mating. The creative energy is at its strongest during this season. If you haven’t decided what you wish to manifest this year, do so now.
To empower your goal, write it on a hard-boiled egg with a wax crayon. The egg is a powerful symbol representing the universe in embryo. Your goal lives within you in the same way that creation lives within its egg, and like the egg, your goal has everything it needs to manifest. Now, draw two interlocking triangles to form a six-pointed star on your egg. This star symbolizes one of the most important keys in magic: as above, so below. What you can create in your imagination, you can manifest on the physical plane. Dye your egg a deep red to symbolize the goddess and life itself. Using your egg as a focus, work in the days ahead with the interplay of imagination and physical striving to achieve your desire. By: Lily Gardner
Silliness – Pig With a Wooden Leg
A traveler was driving through Arkansas when he lost his way and got off the main highway. As he drove by, he saw rows and rows of pigsties and pigpens and pigs running in fields and pigs wallowing in mud. Suddenly, his eye caught something really strange. He did a double take, muttered to himself and then looked a third time. He wondered if he had seen correctly – it looked like a pig with a wooden leg!
He found the lane to the farm and drove up into the farmyard, where he was met by the farmer. “Excuse me,” the traveler said. “I was just driving by and looking at all your pigs, and I noticed something that I just had to stop and ask about. Tell me, did I see right? Is there really a pig out there with a wooden leg?”
The farmer smiled. “Oh, that would be old Caesar you saw. He’s the finest pig a man could ever hope to have – and smart! Well, let me tell you a little about that pig. You see that barge down there on the river? That’s a mining dredge, taking out platinum ore. Old Caesar sniffed out the vein and showed us how to set it up. Now that dredge brings me in about $120,000 every year.
“There’s another thing, too, a little more personal. One night a couple of years ago I got to drinking and I guess I had more than I should have. I passed out drunk, fell down and knocked over a lamp. That started a fire in the house and old Caesar smelled the smoke. He came in the back door, got the wife and kid out, roused me up and got me out.
“There is no question about it – that night old Caesar saved all our lives and you know that is not the sort of thing a man is going to forget too easily.”
“Why,” the traveler said, “this is all amazing! I have never heard of a pig like this before! This is fantastic! But tell me, how did he get that wooden leg? Was he in a wreck or something?”
The farmer laughed and said, “Well, naturally, when you have a pig that smart, you don’t want to eat him all at one time!”
