42F and bright sunshine at the moment. Sunshine is actually reaching the east window in the sunroom in the morning, now. There’s no wind here and very little anywhere nearby except for that one anemometer in Yachats that seems to alway be reading 10mph above the rest. Looks like we have two dry days in a row here. Gotta take advantage of that!
Yesterday started slowly. I was shivering….and then I was too warm. Tempus wasn’t moving fast, either. I guess it’s the damp in our joints. Getting old… <sigh> I got the cooking started and then worked on the cookbook, letting Tempus work back there to get things put away. …and then I went just past the archway and sorted and put away supplies while he was washing dishes.
Food was ready and we ate at 5pm. It was tasty, but we were tired, afterwards. I got the pictures edited and the report written. Stella came in after the Blues Jam and we talked for at least an hour. We got the leftovers dealt with. Tempus had some paperwork, so I got the House newsletter out. …and then waited for him to get done. It was 10:30, but we had some ice cream and rummy cherries before we headed home.
Since we went to sleep right away both of us got up early, but I turned around just now and Tempus is sound asleep again! We’re going to try to get some stuff moved at the shop today, mostly in back, but there’s one whole set of shelves that need to be shifted to another and that stuff to go into a 3rd, so it’s like to be a mess back there. It’ll get some of the stuff out of the aisles, though.
Today’s plant, the Pacific Aster, Symphyotrichum chilense, is one form of aster that grows in the PNW. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphyotrichum_chilense China Asters are the ones grown in gardens and are the common garden aster that Cunningham references: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callistephus_chinensis in his Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. Feminine, Venus, Water – The aster was sacred to the gods and used on altars in many religious paths. It is often used in love sachets or carry the bloom to win love. You can also grow them in your garden to draw love to you! …and here is an article on the whole family which includes sunflowers, chrysanthemums, yarrow and cone-flower!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteraceae
Today is listed as a feast day of Athena by many of the pagan sources that I use, but I can’t find that historically. It *is* a feast of Minerva, who was equated with Athena by the Romans. The feast was called Quinquatria and was a solemn procession and sacrifice. This was a day for women to consult with fortune-tellers and diviners. The gladiatorial games were added later, since they don’t show up as part of the festival in the oldest calendars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinquatria
The shop is open 11-5pm Thursday through Monday, although we’re there a lot later most nights. Need something off hours? Give us a call at 541-563-7154 or Facebook or email at email@example.com If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! Love & Light,
Today’s Astro & Calendar
Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 3/31 at 5:37am. Diana’s Bow – On the 3rd day after the new moon you can (weather permitting) see the tiny crescent in the sky, the New Moon holding the Old Moon in her arms. Begin on your goals for the next month. A good time for job interviews or starting a project. Take a concrete step! God/dess aspect: Daughter/Son/Innocence – Associated God/dess: Vesta, Horus. Phase ends on 3/20 at 6:12pm.
If the crescent Moon were a bow, it would shoot an arrow to the lower right just past Venus in this evening’s twilight, as shown above.
After dark, Sirius shines brilliantly in the south-southwest. Lower left of Sirius, by about one fist, is the triangle of Adhara, Wezen, and Aludra, from right to left. They form Canis Major’s hind foot, rear end, and tail, respectively. Just left or upper left of them, forming a 3rd- and 4th-magnitude arc, are the three uppermost stars of the constellation Puppis. No it’s not a pup, despite its nearness to the Big Dog. It’s the Poop Deck (stern) of the giant ancient constellation Argo Navis, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts. These three stars the only ones of Argo that are readily visible naked-eye from mid-northern latitudes.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair—
The bees are stirring—birds are on the wing—
And Winter slumbering in the open air,
Wears on his smiling face a dream of Spring! – –Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)
A Planting Ritual
O precious seeds which spring from the earth,
giving us magick, healing and power
I return you to the earth.
Feel My love, feel MY power
as I sow you in this magical and mystical hour!!
Grow with light,
grow with love,
grow with the blessings of the god and goddess above!!
So mote it be.
From the Rose of the Sea Ostara Ritual 2010 by Rowan
Priestess: The soil beneath me has given the shelter I needed through the long, cold winter. Now I arise to accept the warmth of our sun lord returned. He and I will spend this time of our youth playing in the grassy medows, climbing the trees of the great forest, and swimming the cool waters of the deepest lakes. I will come to be his friend, and we will be children until Beltain.
Come with me through my lush garden, and let’s play games. Let’s look at the flowers that bloom at this turn of the wheel. Do you see the deep reds, the brilliant blues, and pure whites? This is because of our sun lord. It’s his brilliant youth that gives me the ability to grow something so beautiful. My only regret is that one day his youth will die. The wheel turns.
Take this flower it’s the most beloved that I have in the garden. Smell it. Do you notice that the fragrance is mine? When you smell this scent remember me. In turn I will wear this flower in my hair everyday until I am ready to give up my maiden hood at beltain. Then I will lie down with him. We will make love with each other. He will father a sun, and I will carry it to Yule after his death. Then he will be reborn again. His brilliance will return, and we can play in the garden at the next Ostara. The wheel turns.
Maidens take from me this flower. It’s the one gift I have for you. Let those you want to be your lovers smell it, and then were it in your hair. When they see you wearing the flower they’ll remember the scent of me. In this way I will help you to build the love you desire during you maiden hood. At beltain you will be ready to give it to the young man who smelled your flower.
The wheel is turning. It does for everyone. Remember this. For if you do. When it’s time for you to be a child you will live those moments to their fullest potential.
So Mote it be
All: so mote it be.
Silliness – Dog for Protection
My sister-in-law, a truck driver, had decided to get a dog for protection. As she inspected a likely candidate, the trainer told her, “He doesn’t like men.”
“Perfect,” my sister-in-law thought and took the dog.
Then one day she was approached by two men in a parking lot, and she watched to see how her canine bodyguard would react. Soon it became clear the the trainer wasn’t kidding. As the men got closer, the dog ran under the nearest car.
