There’s been more cloud than sun today, but there are breaks. 55F, wind at 16, gusting into the teens and the AQI back down to minimal. 2/3 of a inch of rain, so far after a third of an inch, yesterday, with the clouds around 700 feet. We have possible thunderstorms rolling in after dark. Winter weather.
We got some new hangings in and I got those checked in, plus I finally got started on making more amulet kits. I got very frustrated because I hunted through the computer and all the backups and could not find the file for the insert…. so I had to recreated it. Luckily we had saved one as a sample.
I got caught up in reading a Harry Potter fanfic in the evening. Some fanfics are horrible, some are pretty good. This one is pretty darned good. “Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce”
So we slept in today. We have chores to do and there’s the paper route tonight. I have a bunch of sewing to do, but first I’m starting another student in the 101 course. She’s going to get caught up while the other is out of town.
Hops are the seed cones of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus. They are an ancient medicinal for stress relief and a sleep aid, helpful with indigestion, and used extensively in brewing. They grow really well in the PNW, which is part of the micro-brew culture that we have. The Yakima hopyard pic to the right is pretty typical for growth habit. The growth of the hops industry was also quite influential in the oldest of the labor movements, since so much of the harvest is done by migrants or part-time workers – Masculine, Mars, Water – Used in healing incenses and charms. Hops placed in a pillow will help with sleep. It is also used in seduction spells. Good for toothache. Below is a cross-section of a hop cone.
In 1893 in New Zealand, 10 weeks after full Suffrage had been granted to women, the next election was held. Thanks to people like Kate Sheppard, leader of the New Zealand female suffrage movement, women voted for the first time in a national general election anywhere in the world. Australia was the second nation, fully nine years later (1902), although on December 18, 1894 women in the State of South Australia became the first in the world to be able to vote and stand for election. Among the earliest nations to grant women the vote include Finland (1906), United Kingdom (1918), and Afghanistan (1922). Switzerland was one of the last, in 1971. The variable star Algol in Perseus >>>> reaches minimum brightness at 4:15 a.m. EST. If you start watching late on the evening of the 26th, you can see its brightness diminish by 70 percent over the course of about 5 hours as its magnitude drops from 2.1 to 3.4. This eclipsing binary star runs through a cycle from minimum to maximum and back every 2.87 days. Algol appears nearly overhead around 11 p.m. local time and remains visible in the northwest until dawn.
Mercury reaches inferior conjunction, passing between the Sun and Earth, at 4 a.m. EST. The innermost planet will return to view before dawn within a week.
Mars (fading from magnitude –0.2 to –0.1 this week) still shines highest in the south at nightfall and sets around midnight. In a telescope Mars shrinks from 10 to 9 arcseconds wide, and it remains as gibbous as we ever see it: 86 percent sunlit. Celtic tree month of Ruis/Elder, Nov 25 – Dec 22 – Ruis – (RWEESH) – Like other Iron Age Europeans, the Celts were a polytheistic people prior to their conversion to (Celtic) Christianity. The Celts divided the year into 13 lunar cycles (months or moons). These were linked to specific sacred trees which gave each moon its name. Today commences the Celtic tree month of Elder.
Elder or Elderberry (Sambucus) is a genus of fast-growing shrubs or small trees in the family Caprifoliaceae. They bear bunches of small white or cream coloured flowers in the Spring, that are followed by bunches of small red, bluish or black berries. The berries are a very valuable food resource for many birds. Common North American species include American Elder, Sambucus canadensis, in the east, and Blueberry Elder, Sambucus glauca, in the west; both have blue-black berries. The common European species is the Common or Black Elder, Sambucus nigra, with black berries.
The common elder (Sambucus nigra L.) is a shrub growing to 10 m (33 feet) in damp clearings, along the edge of woods, and especially near habitations. Elders are grown for their blackish berries, which are used for preserves and wine. The leaf scars have the shape of a crescent moon. Elder branches have a broad spongy pith in their centers, much like the marrow of long bones, and an elder branch stripped of its bark is very bone-like. The red elder (S. racemosa L.) is a similar plant at higher elevations; it grows to 5 m (15 feet).
Red elder extends its native range to northern North America, and it is cultivated along with other native species, but common elders are seldom seen in cultivation. Elders are in the Honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae).

Magick – Recipe
Beef Wellington Appetizers – Flaky puff pastry, savory beef tenderloin and tangy horseradish cream easily come together for a positively holiday-worthy hors d’oeuvre. —Joan Cooper, Sussex, Wisconsin
Total Time – Prep: 45 min. Bake: 15 min. Makes – 16 appetizers (1-1/2 cups sauce)
- 2 beef tenderloin steaks (8 ounces each), cut into 1/2-inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 1-1/4 cups chopped fresh mushrooms
- 2 shallots, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/3 cup sherry or chicken broth
- 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
- 1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
- 1 tablespoon minced chives
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- Additional minced chives, optional
- In a large skillet, brown beef in 1 tablespoon oil. Remove and keep warm.
- In same skillet, saute mushrooms and shallots in remaining oil until tender. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Add sherry, stirring to loosen browned bits from pan. Stir in cream, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil; cook until liquid is almost evaporated, about 7 minutes. Stir in beef and parsley; set aside and keep warm.
- Preheat oven to 400°. On a lightly floured surface, unfold puff pastry. Roll each sheet into a 12-in. square. Cut each into 16 squares.
- Place 2 tablespoonfuls of beef mixture in center of half of squares. Top with remaining squares; press edges with a fork to seal. Place on parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Cut slits in top; brush with egg. Bake 14-16 minutes or until golden brown.
- In a small bowl, combine horseradish cream ingredients; serve with appetizers. Garnish with additional chives if desired.
- To Make Ahead: Freeze unbaked pastries on baking sheets until firm, then wrap and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. When ready to use, bake frozen appetizers at 400° for 16-18 minutes or until golden brown.

- ¾ cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- ¾ teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 10 cheddar cheese sticks, cut in half
- 3 quarts water
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 whole egg, beaten
- Coarse sea salt
- To make pretzel dough: Combine water, sugar and yeast in bowl of a stand mixer and mix with dough hook until combined. Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Add butter, salt and 4 1/2 cups flour to mixture and mix on low speed until combined. Increase speed to medium and continue kneading until dough is smooth and begins to pull away from sides of bowl, about 3 to 4 minutes. If dough appears too wet, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Remove dough from bowl, place on a flat surface and knead into a ball with your hands.
- Coat a large bowl with oil or cooking spray, add dough to bowl and turn to coat it with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm spot until dough doubles in size. This will take about an hour.
- Preheat oven to 425ºF.
- Remove dough from bowl and place on a flat surface. Divide dough into 18-20 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 5-inch long rope. Coil dough around cheese stick half, sealing dough at both ends so the cheese is enclosed. Repeat with remaining dough.
- Next, bring water to a boil in a large pot. Once boiling, carefully add the baking soda.
- Boil pretzels in the water solution, a few at a time, for 30 seconds, splashing the tops with warmed water using a spoon. Remove with a large flat slotted spatula or a spider utensil.
- Place pretzels on a baking sheet, brush tops with egg wash and season liberally with sea salt. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until pretzels are golden brown. Enjoy warm!
Easy Hushpuppies Recipe (Arthur Treacher’s style
My family went to a nice BBQ restaurant here in Raleigh for my sister’s birthday. Instead of bread or biscuits they brought hush puppies to the table before the food arrived. They didn’t last long at the table. All day long I’ve craved hush puppies. So I decided to see what I had lying around to make some. Thankfully I have my favorite deep fryer at the ready always!
1 pkg Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup flour
1/4 onion, finely chopped
1/2 tsp salt
Peanut Oil for frying
Combine mix, egg, milk, flour, onion and salt.
Drop by rounded teaspoon into hot oil.
Fry 4 minutes (turning half way) until golden brown.
Drain well and serve.
