Hi, folks!

Featured photo by Ken Gagne. Last Minus Tide of the cycle at 10:53 PM .

There have been some sunbreaks this morning, already, but right now it’s raining fishhooks and hammer handles again. 51F and the wind has picked up again. It’s running around 12 and gusting up to 20. It was fairly quiet while it was still dark, but we have showers and storm cells walking through. We’ve gotten 4/10 of an inch of rain since midnight and that after getting 1/2 an inch yesterday! Today is supposed to be mostly showers, but count on wet… We should get a break tomorrow but Friday is likely to be very wet.

Yesterday we had some sun, but when it rained, wow, did it! I did some more reading of online books that I’ve found and then we had the 101 catchup class. We ended up going on until 10pm.

After that I started setting up newsletters then got a long nap. The papers were later than usual coming out and at 1:30 Tempus was just finished with the bulk drops. Of course it started to rain harder and harder as the night went on. One guy in Seal Rock who has a long driveway had been playing with the drainage ditches and Tempus ended up tilted into one, but got himself out.

After he picked me up we did Bayshore and lower Waldport and headed out 34. On the way back, though…. one of the driveways, that’s always an interesting turn-around, was clogged with several cars, and in backing out in the dim light Tempus turned too soon and we missed the driveway and went down into the drainage area and got thoroughly stuck … We tried for 1/2 an hour, but then went to call the tow company and discovered that they weren’t going to be open for another 1/2 hour. By 9am we were back on the road again. Tempus dropped me back at the shop after the rest of the 34 drops were done and went on to finish the rest. I’m expecting him back by 10:15 at the worst, barring something else….

Today we need some *sleep*! We still have chores to do, both laundry and dishes, plus a lot of put-away that hasn’t happened. I have an Embellisher’s Guild class tonight, too.

…and the phone rang just now and my first thought was, “Oh no! Not something else going wrong!” …and it was a computer…. <grrrrrrr>

…and he’s back at 10:05. 🙂

220px-Iris_tenaxToday’s plant is Oregon IrisIris tenax. I grew up calling Iris flowers “ladies’ ball gowns”. Local peoples used the tough leaves for making string and rope mostly for snares. –Feminine, Venus, Water – sacred to Iris and Juno, their magicks are used for purification and magicks including 3’s. The three petals stand for faith, wisdom and valor and can be used in magicks to promote these qualities. More on Oregon Iris here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iris_tenax More on Iris in general here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iris_%28plant%29

220px-Alice's_RestaurantToday is the anniversary of the 1965 “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” immortalized in the song “Alice’s Restaurant” that became almost an anthem in the late 60’s. The song by Arlo Guthrie hit #17 on the Billboard chart. We usually listen to it on KLCC after the noon news on Thanksgiving, and but had to catch it on Youtube this year! More here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice%27s_Restaurant …and the youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m57gzA2JCcM

Today’s Astro & Calendar

Waning Moon Magick – From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. Remember: what goes up must come down. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 12/6 at 11:20pm. Waning Gibbous Moon – Best time for draining the energy behind illness, habits or addictions. Magicks of this sort, started now, should be ended before the phase change to the New Moon. – Associated God/dess: Hera/Hero, Cybele, Zeus the Conqueror, Mars/Martius, Anansi, Prometheus. Phase ends at the Quarter on 11/29 at 4:19pm.

The waning Moon shines with Regulus in early dawn on Thursday the 29th, then steps farther east under Leo the next two mornings.

This whole giant pattern was named “the Andromegasus Dipper” by the late Sky & Telescope columnist George Lovi and is shaped sort of like a giant Little Dipper with an extra-big bowl

On these moonless dark evenings, the faint asterism that marks the chained hand of Andromeda is near the zenith. Use its arc of three faint stars to arc your way to the site of NGC 7686, marked by a 6th-magnitude orange foreground star — as charted in Matt Wedel’s Binocular Highlight column in the November Sky & Telescope, page 43. Behind this star and its fainter companion is a sparse, 1/4° scattering of much fainter specks requiring a dark sky.
Algol can guide you to one of the finest binocular star clusters in the late autumn sky. Just after darkness falls, target the variable star through binoculars and place it at the bottom of your field of view. At the top of the field, you should see a hazy patch of light roughly the size of the Full Moon. This is M34, a collection of roughly 100 suns near Perseus’ border with Andromeda. Through 10×50 binoculars, M34’s brightest stars appear to twinkle against the unresolved glow of the cluster’s fainter members. To find more objects worth exploring these autumn nights, see “November’s 50 finest deep-sky objects” in the November issue of Astronomy.

Celtic tree month of Ruis/Elder, Nov 25 – Dec 22 – Ruis – (RWEESH) – Like other Iron Age Europeans, the Celts were a polytheistic people prior to their conversion to (Celtic) Christianity. The Celts divided the year into 13 lunar cycles (months or moons). These were linked to specific sacred trees which gave each moon its name. Today commences the Celtic tree month of Elder.
Elder or Elderberry (Sambucus) is a genus of fast-growing shrubs or small trees in the family Caprifoliaceae. They bear bunches of small white or cream coloured flowers in the Spring, that are followed by bunches of small red, bluish or black berries. The berries are a very valuable food resource for many birds. Common North American species include American Elder, Sambucus canadensis, in the east, and Blueberry Elder, Sambucus glauca, in the west; both have blue-black berries. The common European species is the Common or Black Elder, Sambucus nigra, with black berries.
The common elder (Sambucus nigra L.) is a shrub growing to 10 m (33 feet) in damp clearings, along the edge of woods, and especially near habitations. Elders are grown for their blackish berries, which are used for preserves and wine. The leaf scars have the shape of a crescent moon. Elder branches have a broad spongy pith in their centers, much like the marrow of long bones, and an elder branch stripped of its bark is very bone-like. The red elder (S. racemosa L.) is a similar plant at higher elevations; it grows to 5 m (15 feet).
Red elder extends its native range to northern North America, and it is cultivated along with other native species, but common elders are seldom seen in cultivation. Elders are in the Honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae).

After Apple-Picking BY ROBERT FROST

My long two-pointed ladder’s sticking through a tree
Toward heaven still,
And there’s a barrel that I didn’t fill
Beside it, and there may be two or three
Apples I didn’t pick upon some bough.
But I am done with apple-picking now.
Essence of winter sleep is on the night,
The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.
I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight
I got from looking through a pane of glass
I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough
And held against the world of hoary grass.
It melted, and I let it fall and break.
But I was well
Upon my way to sleep before it fell,
And I could tell
What form my dreaming was about to take.
Magnified apples appear and disappear,
Stem end and blossom end,
And every fleck of russet showing clear.
My instep arch not only keeps the ache,
It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.
I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend.
And I keep hearing from the cellar bin
The rumbling sound
Of load on load of apples coming in.
For I have had too much
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
One can see what will trouble
This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.
Were he not gone,
The woodchuck could say whether it’s like his
Long sleep, as I describe its coming on,
Or just some human sleep.

Magick – The Oldest version of the Charge of the Goddess from Gardner’s 1949 BoS

The Charge: “Lift Up the Veil”

Magus: “Listen to the words of the Great mother, who of old was also called among men Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arianrhod, Bride, and by many other names.”

High Priestess: “At mine Altars the youth of Lacedaemon in Sparta made due sacrifice. Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, ye shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me who am Queen of all Witcheries and magics. There ye shall assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not won its deepest secrets. To these will I teach things that are yet unknown. And ye shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites, both men and women, and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music, and love, all in my praise. There is a Secret Door that I have made to establish the way to taste even on earth the elixir of immortality. Say, ‘Let ecstasy be mine, and joy on earth even to me, To Me,’ For I am a gracious Goddess. I give unimaginable joys on earth, certainty, not faith, while in life! And upon death, peace unutterable, rest, and ecstasy, nor do I demand aught in sacrifice.”

Magus: “Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess.”

High Priestess: “I love you: I yearn for you: pale or purple, veiled or voluptuous. I who am all pleasure, and purple and drunkenness of the innermost senses, desire you. Put on the wings, arouse the coiled splendor within you. Come unto me, for I am the flame that burns in the heart of every man, and the core of every Star. Let it be your inmost divine self who art lost in the constant rapture of infinite joy. Let the rituals be rightly performed with joy and beauty. Remember that all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. So let there be beauty and strength, leaping laughter, force and fire by within you. And if thou sayest, ‘I have journeyed unto thee, and it availed me not,’ rather shalt thou say, ‘I called upon thee, and I waited patiently, and Lo, thou wast with me from the beginning,’ for they that ever desired me shall ever attain me, even to the end of all desire.

This much of the rites must ever be performed to prepare for any initiation, whether of one degree or of all three.
