Despite the thunderstorms during the night it’s not all that wet out there, now anyway. 54F, wind at 11mph, gusting into the upper teens, AQI 8. 2/3 of an inch of rain since midnight….and tomorrow’s light will be 9 seconds longer than today’s. The Wheel has Turned! There’s more rain coming in later today and we’re under a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY FOR WINDS, HAZARDOUS SEAS and HIGH SURF ADVISORY.
Yesterday started with a rush of customers, but by 1:30 I was able to go to the Frog to get some Christmas candy for the kids. We had people in sporadically after that. By suppertime we had most of 1/5 of an inch of rain and the wind had picked up.
At about 1/4 to midnight there was a huge rumble. It sounded like thunder. We were getting a few gusts into the 30’s. ..and it was indeed a thunderstorm and went on for most of an hour, unlike our usual storms. There were more rumbles later, too.
Our kids from Seattle are coming this afternoon for a visit. I have to go get ready for them! We’re open, now, but closing on time this afternoon, since the kids said something about taking us out for supper.
Today’s plant is Evergreen huckleberry, Vaccinium ovatum, a small shrub that is native to the PNW. The berries were a staple food for the PNW indigines. The fruit is blue-black and tends to be small, but makes excellent jam and the leaves are smoked or made into tea for colds. Gender, Feminine – Planet, Venus – Element, Water – Carry for luck and health. This is a plant that will keep away evil and break hexes. Burn the leaves to bring visions and to make dreams come true.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen_Huckleberry
Spinning? Actually today is the birthday in 1732 of the man whose spinning device revolutionized fabric manufacture. If you can afford more that one set of clothing, thank Richard Arkwright! He was the youngest of 13 children, son of a tailor, who rose in rank to “Sir” on the basis of his invention called the “water frame” and a yarn-making device, as well as improvements in carding machines that made possible the cheap calicoes. He was one of the entrepreneurs of the Industrial Revolution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_ArkwrightYes, the photo is Freya, spinning. 🙂

As the stars come out, face due north and look high. Cassiopeia is now a flattened M shape canted at about a 45° angle (depending on where you live). Yet hardly more than an hour later, the M has turned horizontal. Why so fast? Constellations passing near the zenith appear to rotate rapidly with respect to the direction “up.”
Head outside in early evening this week and you can see the Big Dipper scraping the northern horizon. For latitudes north of about 40°, this conspicuous asterism never rises or sets (“circumpolar” in astronomical parlance), though December evenings find it at its lowest ebb. This means that the constellation on the opposite side of the North Celestial Pole, the familiar W-shaped Cassiopeia, currently rides highest in the sky.
Mercury remains a nice sight in predawn twilight for the next several days. This morning, the innermost planet lies 7° above the southeastern horizon 45 minutes before sunrise. Mercury shines at magnitude –0.4, easily bright enough to see with the naked eye (although binoculars will help you pick it out of the twilight glow). Simply look 2° to the lower left of brilliant Jupiter, which shines about four times brighter than the inner world. When viewed through a telescope, Mercury appears 6″ across and shows a gibbous phase.
Venus (magnitude –4.7, in Virgo) rises as an eerie “UFO” above the east-southeast horizon more than two hours before the first light of dawn. As dawn arrives, Venus is the brilliant “Morning Star” dominating the southeast. In a telescope Venus is a very thick crescent, waxing from 41% to 45% sunlit this week.

Secret of the Unhewn Stone, Dec 23 – (This is the blank day in this calendar, the one day of the year that is not ruled by a tree and its corresponding Ogham alphabet character. Its name denotes the quality of potential in all things.)
Graves (1966) makes a case for an additional “blank” ogham, “the unhewn dolmen arch”, which he assigns to the mistletoe, a plant for which there is abundant evidence of its ritual importance to the Celts. There are two common mistletoes in Europe, both of which live as parasites on trees. The common mistletoe (Viscum album L.) parasitizes many tree species, including oaks in the western part of its range. It forms white berries between Samhain and Yule. The yellow-berried mistletoe (Loranthus europaeus L.) does not extend to western Europe. It is found primarily on oaks. It is most likely the “golden bough”, being more common in the eastern Mediterranean than the common mistletoe. The common mistletoe has been cultivated in North American for the Yule trade, and there are several native mistletoes in the genus Phoradendron. Mistletoes are in the Mistletoe family (Viscaceae).
Celtic Tree Month of Beth/Birch, Dec 24 – Jan 20, Beith – (BEH), birch – The silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) is the most common tree birch in much of Europe. It grows up to 30 m (100 feet) high, but is more often found in spreading clumps on sandy soils. It is one of the first trees to colonize an area after a mature forest is cut; this is probably a large part of its symbolic connection with new beginnings. It is cultivated in North America, often under the name of weeping birch. The three trees in my front yard form root sprouts that would take over the bed where they are planted if I didn’t cut them back. The common birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) is almost as widespread as the silver birch, but grows primarily on acid or peaty soils. It can reach 20 m (65 feet) in height. Birches are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae). Curtis Clark

MOON OF SILVER I – Tune: We Three Kings
Maiden, Mother, Ancient Crone,
Queen of Heaven on your throne,
Praise we sing Thee, Love we bring Thee,
For all that you have shown.
Chorus: Oh, Moon of Silver, Sun of Gold,
Gentle Lady, Lord so bold!
Guide us ever, failing never,
Lead us in ways of old.
Lord of Darkness, Lord of Light,
Gentle Brother, King of Might,
Praise we sing thee, Love we bring Thee
On this Solstice night.
Another fresh new year is here…
another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear;
to love and laugh and give! ~William Arthur Ward
May the Moon never Leave You in A place so dark that night is Silent…
May the Sun Always Visit Your Window in Birth of Day, and no Chords Bind You to that which Would Not Stay without Them…
May the Season Hold You, and Open You to All that Awaits, with grace, Dignity, Courage…and Kindness…
May You Walk , even when so Torn, so desolate that Road seems cruel…
But Always Give you the Fortitude to Weather the Pain, the Hurt…
May the Face you See when you Awaken in Snow s gentle Veil, Be the One You Love amd Recieve, with Joy and Hope Doves upon Your Shoulders…Happy Yule.. © Angela Mia Antonelli
Christmas is not in tinsel and lights and outward show.
The secret lies in an inner glow.
It’s lighting a fire inside the heart.
Good will and joy a vital part.
It’s higher thought and a greater plan.
It’s glorious dream in the soul of man.
