Daily Stuff 2-5-19 Santo Gato

Hi, folks!

Featured photo by Ken Gagne. Last Minus Tide of the cycle at 7:21 PM of -0.2 feet.

Right now there’s bright sunshine, but 10 minutes ago it was pouring! It’s a fit-in-all-the-weathers day, apparently. 41F, wind at 1mph, AQI45. We’ve gotten 1/4 inch of rain since midnight. We’re under a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY FOR HAZARDOUS SEAS until 4pm. Chance of rain starts again Thursday evening, but very likely on Friday.

The day started slowly, but pretty soon my baskets showed up. The folks who brought them brought their little granddaughter and she was just the cutest, most sociable little critter that loved nose boops…. Anja got her baby fix. 🙂

Tempus has a bunch of baskets to scrub and then we’ll actually have enough for the feast and a couple of other purposes. He worked in back and then ran some errands while I was writing.

Class went really well, we whomped through what was left of Lesson Five and got about 1/2-way through lesson 6.

Tempus made supper after that: mustard chicken, buttered peas and air-fried potatoes. He didn’t go to sleep until late and we slept in a bit, today, but we do have the paper route tonight.

We’re heading for Toledo as soon as we can get moving. We’re going to be baking today, at least for awhile. Hoping to do marzipan cookies and the “persian boob cookies”. Those are appropriate for the day. <snicker> Paper route this evening.

A good attitude…..

Today’s weather by Ken Gagne

elder month Husband_and_wife_trees - Blackthorn RuisToday’s Plant is Blackthorn, Prunus spinosa, sometimes called “sloe”, wish-thorn or faery tree. The blossoms, the fruits and the crimson sap display the three colors of the Great Goddess: white, black, and red. The dangerous long spikes and the red “blood” that flows in the veins of this tree enhance the dramatic effect of Her symbolism. Blackthorns are sacred to the Luantishees, which are Blackthorn Fairies who guard the trees. It makes great walking sticks, such as shillelaghs. The fruit and leaves contain Vitamin C, organic acids, tannins, and sugars. Otzi, the “Iceman” had fruits in his stomach, even though they’re pretty bitter for food. Good wines and liqueurs are made from the fruits. Steep the flowers for a diuretic, tonic, and laxative. Dried fruits can treat bladder, kidney and stomach ailments. Boil the leaves for a mouthwash or to sooth the throat from tonsillitis or laryngitis. –Feminine, Saturn, Earth – Blackthorn symbolizes the inevitability of Death, Good in magicks of protection and revenge, strife and negativity, the balance between light and darkness. The staves cane help in exorcism, to make wishes, in divination and general protection magicks. Being a plant that’s bad to tangle with it also symbolizes not only death and the conquering of death, but the wisdom gained in life and beyond life and can be used in magicks for the gaining of such wisdom. plant flower primrose primula vulgarisFeast day of St Agatha, martyr, patroness of victims of breast cancer. – What *is* it about martyrs that makes the stories so gruesome? In this case, because of the tortures, the pictures get pretty “squirmy”. “Agatha is an aspect of the goddess known to the Greeks as Tyche, to the Romans as Fortuna, and to the Anglo-Saxons as Wyrd. Today is especially potent for fortune telling and all forms of divination. Santo Gato SombreAlso known as Santo Gato, it is said that she appears as a cat and can summon storms when angry.” (Pip’s Almanac) Common primrose, Primula vulgaris, is today’s plant, dedicated to this saint. More on Agatha here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Agatha Tyche here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyche  Wyrd: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyrd  More on today’s plant here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primula_vulgaris  And there’s an article in French with several more pictures of Agatha’s Bread http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santo_Gato

Sirius the Dog Star blazes high in the south-southeast after dinnertime, the brightest star of Canis Major. In a dark sky with lots of stars visible, the constellation’s points can be connected to form a convincing dog profile. He’s currently standing on his hind legs; Sirius is on his chest. But through the light pollution where most of us live, only his five brightest stars are easily visible. These form a short-handled meat cleaver. Sirius is the cleaver’s top back corner, its blade faces right, and its handle is down below, pointing lower left.
One of the sky’s largest asterisms — a recognizable pattern of stars separate from a constellation’s form — occupies center stage on February evenings. To trace the so-called Winter Hexagon, start with southern Orion’s luminary, Rigel. From there, the hexagon makes a clockwise loop. The second stop is brilliant Sirius in Canis Major. Next, pick up Procyon in the faint constellation Canis Minor, then the twins Castor and Pollux in Gemini, followed by Capella in Auriga, Aldebaran in Taurus, and finally back to Rigel.

Moon Apogee/Perigee – *
For a good explanation of what this is – https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/lunar-perigee-apogee.html

The Moon reaches apogee, the farthest point in its orbit around Earth, at 4:29 a.m. EST. It then lies 252,622 miles (406,555 kilometers) from Earth’s center.
Venus (magnitude –4.3) and Jupiter(magnitude –1.9) rise long before the first glimmer of dawn. By the time dawn begins to brighten, they dominate the southeast. Each morning Jupiter appears 1° farther upper right of Venus. On February 2nd they’re separated by 10°, on February 9th by 17°. About 10° to the right of Jupiter, look for twinkly orange Antares. At magnitude +1.0 it’s not nearly as eye-catching. In a telescope Venus is dazzling white and gibbous. Jupiter appears half again as large as Venus, but its surface brightness is some 50 times dimmer — due mostly to Jupiter’s 7-times-greater distance from the illuminating Sun.

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.
