It was so late when the newsletter went out yesterday that there wasn’t much day left! Once I’m better these will be coming out at a more normal time. I think my fever is broken and I have to have the shop open this afternoon while Tempus runs errands in Newport.
I spent the evening reading and embroidering and even did a little sewing. I’m still wobbly. I never managed to sleep until he got home around 6:30, so of course, I overslept. I’m at the shop and working, now. He’s heading for Newport in a couple of minutes.
Today’s Plant is Bleeding Heart, lamprocapnos spectabilis (which Cunningham has as dicentra spectabilis, an older designation). Other names are: old-fashioned bleeding-heart, Venus’s car, Lady in a bath, Dutchman’s trousers, or Lyre-flower, which all have various folklore attached.
They’re native to Asia, but are common garden ornamentals and so suited to our climate that I assumed that they were native here! You see them all through the woods at this time of year. – Feminine, Venus, Water – Used in magick mostly as a divination. Crush the flower. If it “bleeds red” there is love. If it “bleeds white”, either love has died, or there is no hope of it. Be careful if you bring the live plant indoors because it can produce irritation and anger between people in the household. To forestall this push a silver bead or a dime (standing in for silver) into the soil, and say, “Lady of the Moon, give us peace, in your honor, and we honor you!”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamprocapnos_spectabilis
If she (Ishtar) will not grant thee her release,
To Tammuz, the lover of her youth,
Pour out pure waters, pour out fine oil;
With a festival garment deck him that he may play on the flute of lapis lazuli,
That the votaries may cheer his liver. [his spirit]
Belili [sister of Tammuz] had gathered the treasure,
With precious stones filled her bosom.
When Belili heard the lament of her brother, she dropped her treasure,
She scattered the precious stones before her,
“Oh, my only brother, do not let me perish!
On the day when Tammuz plays for me on the flute of lapis lazuli, playing it for me with the porphyry ring.
Together with him, play ye for me, ye weepers and lamenting women!
That the dead may rise up and inhale the incense.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar

Today’s Astro & Calendar
Waning Moon Magick – From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. Remember: what goes up must come down. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 4/6 at 1:58am. Waning Gibbous Moon – Best time for draining the energy behind illness, habits or addictions. Magicks of this sort, started now, should be ended before the phase change to the New Moon. – Associated God/dess: Hera/Hero, Cybele, Zeus the Conqueror, Mars/Martius, Anansi, Prometheus. Phase ends at the Quarter on 3/27 at 9:10pm. Waning Crescent Moon – Best time for beginning introspective magicks that are more long term (full year cycle) A good time for beginning knot magicks to “bind up” addictions and illness (finish just before the Tide Change of Dark to New) and “tying up loose ends” God/dess aspects – Demeter weeping for her Daughter, Mabon, Arachne Tyr. Phase ends on 3/31 at 1:58pm.
In the western sky after dusk, spot orange Mars passing just 3° from the delicate, blue-white Pleiades this evening through Sunday evening. Mars appears 3° south of the Pleiades star cluster both this evening and tomorrow night, making a dramatic sight through binoculars. The ruddy hue of the planet provides a nice contrast to the cluster’s blue-white stars.
The Moon moves eastward relative to the background stars an average of 13° every day, and this morning it has traveled to the vicinity of Saturn. The ringed planet rises around 3:15 a.m. local daylight time and the Moon, which now appears as a waning crescent, follows about 10 minutes later. The two remain within 3° of each other throughout the morning hours. Magnitude 0.6 Saturn remains a fixture in northeastern Sagittarius all week. If you target the gas giant through a telescope, you’ll see its 16″-diameter disk surrounding by a stunning ring system that spans 37″ and tilts 24° to our line of sight.
Uranus sets in the west shortly after dark.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

THE AWESOME AMAZON
I’m a daughter of ice giants,
And an amazon queen;
I carry spears and axes
And am beautiful and lean.
I have many warrior subjects,
And they look at me in awe;
For I’m talented and awesome,
And haven’t any flaw.
My horse can gallop rapid miles
At a time, you’ll see;
In the world there’s no one else
Quite as great as me!
I love to fight and roar and kill
And bite and claw and hack;
And if you believe all that,
I have some flying pigs out back! – © Copyright 09/12/05, Beth Johnson (Mystic Amazon)
